  • It's been a while since our last video, however I'm excited to share my new E90 BMW 335i with you all!
    I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in my E86 BMW Z4 Coupe, but it was time to move on to the next thing.
    In this video I talk through my reasons for selling the Z4 and why I went for the E90 335i.
    Hope you enjoy!

    I’ve had my E86 for 3 years now but I’ve had my E90 330d manual for 9.5 years. The E90 really is peak BMW in my eyes. Just enough modern stuff on it, old school well built feel to it and it still looks really good. Enjoy it.

    I have a 2011 335i E90 Msport with manual and no idrive. Bought new at BMW Welt in Munich through European Delivery. Have done proper maintenance since new and only experienced typical n55 issues such as water pump, charge pipe, etc. Recently added OEM M3 suspension bits and preemptively replaced rod bearings/installed upgraded oil pump at 60k miles. Bearings looked new except for slight wear on #6. Used King bearings that should be better than OEM. I use it as dry-weather daily driver with Elise S2 as fun car and Toyota Tacoma as workhorse/wet weather vehicle. E90 is a great daily that bridges the gap between traditional BMW feel and more modern features.

    Thanks for posting buddy. I honestly couldn’t run something like that as a daily commuting into Manchester. As fun as it would be, I’d blow my monthly disposable income. I think this is obviously why people hunt down the 335d’s. It has 85% of the fun + economy. An M140i is probably a good all rounder. Also the B58 is such a better engine than the N55
    Although, agree, the N55 sounds better! 🔥

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah that's fair, these cars aren't cheap to run and if you're doing a lot of miles the 335d makes way more sense since the N55 is pretty thirsty! Yeah for reliability and all round the B58 is way better - its interesting though as the N55 is very happy at 6-7k RPM and has more of an N/A feel when the turbo is at max boost pressure, whereas the B58 is apparently not necessarily worth revving out as it has so much mid-range torque, I always found that to be the case with the B48 in my JCW too! Both absolutely amazing engines though, would love a B58 some day!

    I’m potentially about to go the other way….

I like my 335i but I really miss a manual but if I’m honest, I prefer my wife’s E91 330i with a manual gearbox. I never use the back seats in my car, so I’m really tempted by an E86 Z4.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  9 месяцев назад

      Awesome, nice job finding a manual too! Yeah the rod bearing issue does come up a bit online, out of interest what caused it? Did yours do the classic consume serpentine belt through the front main seal, or oil starvation or something else? @@FootToPedal Thanks! They are rare to come across, at least with other options that I wanted like the iDrive & H/K speakers etc. I've got some videos of the knocking on my channel as it started off quite soft and I wasn't certain that it was rod knock initially... then I dropped the oil and found all the metal!!
      It hasn't been stripped down yet but I would bet heavily on oil starvation as the PO found the inner basket/case of the oil filter cap was missing, so the bottom o-ring that keeps oil in the block after shutting down was missing - and we don't know how long for! So I reckon lack of oil supply/pressure at start up over and over again. The belt was in great condition tbh and there didn't appear to be any leakage from the oil filter housing.
      It has 120k miles and not the most frequent of oil changes during its life too. So hopefully your with lower miles and a more comprehensive service history should be sound!
      I've also read up and learnt about the engine priming that needs to be done after changing certain gaskets like sump and OFHG, and mine wasn't always taken to a BMW dealer or specialist, so they may not have been aware of this step - which has also been attributed to bearing failures.
      I still don't see it as an unreliable engine though, just one that is sensitive to maintenance and needs the right people working on it.

    • @FootToPedal
      @FootToPedal  9 месяцев назад

      @@foodonfilm5935 Very interesting to hear your insight! Sounds like a slightly unlucky set of circumstances but still 120k isn't too bad going!
      Yeah I've read about the priming of the engine after certain gasket changes, that's what worries me because I don't know that every garage would be aware of that!
      But yeah this is very true, at the end of the day it's a high performance turbocharged engine so maintenance is always going to be important, sadly not everyone is willing to look after them like we do! I hope you have yours up and running soon!

      I think the general consensus is the rod bearing issues are exaggerated on the N55, its not a clearance issue like some of the older BMW engines, but rather an oil starvation issue. So a lot of it is down to cars being driven hard on track or not serviced correctly. With that being said rod bearing failure does happen, although seems to be usually north of 100k miles. Service them regularly and they should be fine
