I have the Brazos, but I thought long and hard about getting this one. And you're so right about the LSG fire management basket. It makes a huge difference in both the quality of smoke and in maintaining steady temps.

It really does. I wanted the Brazos but the mobility stopped me from getting it. Both are great pits tho

@Fred Wills my Brazos was pretty air tight, but it did have a few leaks on the cook chamber door. I fixed that with the Lavalock felt gasket and it sealed it up nice and tight. The firebox doesn't really need to be airtight because the smoke naturally flows into the cook chamber anyway. I've had the Brazos for just over a year and to me it's the best smoker available for the money. Well worth it.

I went with the over and under. Doing second cook this weekend first time I used half splits. Found that to be too much heat. Gonna try 1/4 splits this time. And I also think the V- shaped log holder will help me as well. Great video

Many thanks for the detailed review! I fabricated a vertical direct smoker and just bought the LSG basket based on your comments. Appreciate it! One question - What size are you wood splits? They are definitely not the "beer can" size that many advocate, but your temps sounds steady and perfect at 275. How often are you adding a split?

Been smoking on this smoker for awhile now but a m not happy with the heat getting all the way to the top, been thinking about removing the plate between the upper and lower chamber so the grease can drop to the coals

I have pretty consistent temps, especially with this firebox. I don’t cook higher than 275 and I’ll rotate the grates every hour or so

Have been looking at a vertical smoker & appreciate your video, not many other owners have put one up. I did see one the other day & the owner highlighted a lot of poor craftsmanship on his. How about yours? Everything square? No gaps / leaks???

I looked at the 3 that were my academy store. I picked the best one there. One was in really poor shape. I just recommend going to your store or even multiple stores to pick yours out. It’s a good overall smoker
