36 years ago, when I bought my Leicaflex SL in chrome that came included with the Leitz Wetzlar Summicron-R 50mm f2 lens and lens accessories such as the Leitz Wetzlar Serie VI UVa Filter, 14160 Filter Adapter and12564 lens hood was the most expensive 35mm SLR on the used market. Being 18 years old in 1988, owning a Leicaflex SL while in high school my photography teacher and I would go for photo-walks every weekend and practice street photography, he would bring along his black Leica M4 with the Super-Angulon-M 21mm and external viewfinder along with his black Leicaflex SL with a few lenses inside his Domke F-2 camera bag. In today's digital DSLR and mirrorless cameras, all I can say is that my same trusty Leicaflex SL is still with me.
Excellent review - as always. I got a Leicaflex SL last year for 110€ including 1 yr guarantee from the local dealer. Overall an excellent camera. What was „special“ to me was the focusing screen, which has a microprism field, which I didn‘t like. So I upgraded to the Leicaflex SL2, which has a split field as focusing aid. The build quality of the bodies is marvelous, even better than most Nikon consumer and semi-pro bodies (ok, the Nikon F2 is even better, since it was designed for the requirements of serious professional photographers).
Great review! I've had a Leicaflex SL years ago and now I have a SL2 50 Jahre, which I love. Just adding that the 3 cams work on all models (including the R8-R9).
Hi Jonathan, I'd like to buy a 35mm lens for my Leicaflex SL however, so I thought a Elmarit-r 2.8 35mm would be the perfect candidate. However, apparently, there are multiple versions of the Elmarit-r 35mm. Can you please tell me which one would be compatible with my Leicaflex SL? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I can’t help thinking Leica’s marketeers don’t appreciate how strongly established these historic names are. And to reuse CL was madness considering how many people remember how unreliable the original was! Thanks for commenting.

2 or 3 cam lenses will work perfectly. 1 cam and 3rd cam lenses won’t.
@@WorldwideCameraExchange Does it have stop down metering? It has the lever, but does it effect the meter?
@oh_aces meter just as you would with a modern camera. The stop down lever is for depth of field checks only.
Leica reused the SL name just like the CL name, they seem to have a tradition of bringing old stuff names back to nowadays.

The Leicaflex Cameras was too expensive for Leitz to produce, Leitz should have made their Leica R Lenses for other Camera brand Cameras !
