A former Tesla Owner's perspective: Traded in 2017 Tesla MX 100D for Kia EV9 GT AWD with all options in January. After 8-months of real world use, EV9 is far superior. First concern was EPA rating but I have been pleasantly surprised that EV9 far exceeds 300 mile range in combined driving. Tesla at best got about 270 mile range. Agree with features that need improving but I have already received five OTA updates from Kia that keeps improving features. Longest DC charging session on EA so far has been 20:49, outside temp 112F, 179kW speed, which is much faster vs what I was getting with Tesla SuperChargers. Never thought I would ever own a Kia but they have won me as a customer.

I've had my GT line since April, with a little over 6k miles... It is AMAZING. Have had a few issues, one with the passenger side mirror making a loud clicking sound when folding in (which was fixed by replacing the mirror under warranty) and the AC making a more audible noise and vibration when I turn the AC too high, usually past the 5th notch up. Other than those things, I have no regrets or issues!
Wife got an EV9 GT and loves it. It drives very well, has so many fun options and is quiet. I drive a M3 highland and prefer the lower ride but the GT is no slouch. Great car
We bought the EV9 about 6 weeks ago. This is our first EV and we sold our Honda Odyssey (two kids), here is my experience so far. - You get used to the start button in 2 days. - The ventilated and heated seats are the best I've ever used. I don't even go above level 1 using them. - I have level 2 at home so rarely have to worry about public charging (Wallbox Pulsar 2, also love it). - I do two long trips a year (12+ hours each way) and was very hesitant to buy the EV9 until they announced that Tesla Super chargers would be available in January 2025. Hopefully it is all working right before my first long trip in March. Downsides so far (these are very minimal as we really do love the car): - Coming from an Odyssey I know I'm going to be missing cup holders on my long trips. - No designated sunglasses storage - XM Radio screen is garbage. The biggest portion of the screen is dedicated to telling you the station, and there is a small section that tells you song and band info, but it doesn't scroll so you can't actually read the song name. - Window buttons feel cheap, for something that gets touched a lot I think they should be higher quality. Ultimate verdict - we love the car, hoping we still love it after our first long road trip. If that doesn't work out we do have a second car that is ICE that we will end up using until charging infrastructure catches up.
Recently, I did three east to west round trips on our Model Y. One word, "flawless." We ran into Rivian and Mach e owners while they were pulling in to Supercharging stations. Right after they plugged in, I started conversations. After about 30 sec, they had to stare at their phones from not charging. Later, they ended up going to third-party charging stations. One actually had to drive back to the nearest city they had just passed. EV9 is great, but you have to understand NACS isn't fully open to non-teslas.
I can't wait to see your first impressions and review of the 2025 refreshed Model Y. I have been occasionally driving my friend's 2017 Model 3 for almost 7 years and love it. My first Tesla will be the 2025 Y Performance:)

Same here, too. We couldn't wait to trade our Model Y to Ev9. Model y is way too bumpy, and the cabin noise is unbearable sometimes, especially if you live in the midwest where the road has a ton of potholes
At 12:00 - paying $20 monthly for connection? This is robbery and I’m afraid more will want to copy this practice. Can you imagine ASUS charging you a premium to receive a connection? I don’t believe automakers should be able to charge for something they do not deliver (the signal).
Great video, but you don’t describe the regen pedals accurately. The pedals alter how intrusive regen is, but even on regen level 1, if you step on the brakes, the car will only invoke the actual brake surfaces if full regen cannot stop the car fast enough.
I'm glad to see you review a non-Tesla vehicle, which you used to do a lot. Please do the Chevy Equinox EV. I'd be interested to hear your perspective on it.
You have some points, but with the EA app, you can find the locations and it will let you know how many stalls are open or down. I'm sure you already knew that.
I was wondering, that pull out table between the front seats could be used as a support between the middle seats when you want to make a “bed” in the back.
I love my Kia EV9 GTline.. I drove to Maine I got no problem.. I use cruise and whaala it drive on its own and slow down on its own when there car in front of you it’s so cool..
The navigation system to use for charging infrastructure in a non Tesla is ABRP premium hooked up to the system. It works flawlessly. We've road tripped in our EV9 and have not had an issue with charging or having to wait once.
Where have you all charged and what was the charging rate you have experienced? We are Tesla owners considering to switch but are nervous about the charging situation.
Granted some people need this much size (I don't but some do admittedly). But the cost here is such that I could have bought two copies of my Toyota Prius (2024) for the same cost. And I don't need a charger (just a gas station) and I get great mileage (55+mpg). And I don't need a charger in my garage. I applaud the people driving EVs to make the infrastructure better but it's not going to be me. I may have to replace my Lithium Ion battery one of these days, but it won't be $20,000+ when it happens, especially if it's out of warranty (kept my last Prius 12 years).
You didn’t mention - no Dashcams and no ‘Sentry mode’. It’s made in S Korea where Blackvue and Thinkware originate. You would think Kia could at least partner with them. Also, this large it needs 450 miles range. Maybe new chemistries and solid state will get us there. Far in the future, inductive charging.

Ryan i bought me first electric car 2 1/2 years ago (Teslay Y) and learned a lot by watching you're videos, but i what i didnt like was the crappy susupension and the one screen to access all controls, so i traded it in last month for the KIA EV9 land AWD and wow, what a difference. I like this vechile way more than my Tesla, it has real control buttons , great suspension and comfort. I carry a lot of stuff for my work and it has plenty of room, thanks for you're review on this as well.
My wife is looking for an alternative to Tesla for an EV. Why would we buy a Kia EV9 at $74k or maybe $70k when I could get a Model Y at $40.5k? Only reason is the dislike (wife's) of the lack of buttons, knobs, levers, etc. Sigh.
I think the ev5 will be the model y competitor. This being a full 3rd row will be more comparable to the model x which is much closer to the 70k price tag
Well the EV 9 is a true 3 row EV so I think they are really in two different categories. If you need the 3 rows then the EV 9 is going to be much more practical. I like buttons and knobs too so if I bought a Model Y I’d wait and see if I was okay with just the screen and if I still wanted a knob I’d buy a SEXY knob and then I’d be able to program it to do all the things I’d want it to do. But to me customizing the knob would be fun and I imagine for others it might be a chore. One of the things I like about the model Y is that there is such a huge market to allow you to customize it. But I wouldn’t consider it worth the money to put a 3rd row in a Model Y, just seems like it isn’t large enough. Finally, happy wife, happy life. Not so bad that she gets what she wants I imagine.
Good vehicle, but things they need to improve: being able to charge faster on the supercharger network (it will only be able to pull 87 kW from a 250 kW V3), moving the charge port to the driver's rear for better supercharger access, and the software- super dated, needs an update 🤔
It's not the vehicles fault, I'm able to charge perfectly fine on DC fast chargers at up to 250 kw, no issues with the position of the charge port at any charger I've been to.

Take all the best from Kia Carnival, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, which is 8 seats, childseat tilt, ability to reposition middle 2nd row seat to have it in opposite direction, sliding doors and all of the space in the deep trunk. I just got my first EV car two weeks ago, was debating between a Tsela or Kia. I ended up with the EV9. Best decision I've made, love it! Got a great deal and saved me over 30K. I would have chosen the Ev9 even if it was priced the same as a model X.
Tesla MY owner- wanted a new EV for my birthday (#65), that was not a Tesla. Looked at all of them and was ready to buy an EV9 GT trim. Decided on one last test drive of the LR AWD Tesla MX, a design that has been around for almost 10 years (with essentially one refresh). I sit in the MX and immediately feel like I am back into the future compared to the EV9. The Tesla big screen, top notch tech, comfort, FSD, adjustable air suspension, performance (which I really don’t need),and Tesla supercharger network were way too much to give up. Kia is making great strides and the EV 9 is a compelling product- just not for me. Yes, I did buy a MX (tax incentive model) and really enjoy it. I drive 40 miles a day and regularly drive cross country-really no other choice.
As a former Genesis owner, I'd never trust them for electronics. Look how many Hyundais and Kias have dead tail lights Then you gotta deal with the terrible dealerships. No thanks.
Interesting. I have had my Niro EV from 2019 and have driven nearly 220,000 km since getting it new. None of my lights have needed changing. Only one issue so far and this just happened this year. My AC isn't working well. It still blows cool air but for some reason it's not very strong. This has been the only issue.
Based on the horrid charging experience starting at around the 17:55 mark, there’s no way I’d buy one of these until they get Tesla Supercharger access.
You can use them on the Tesla supercharger network now, but with the 800V architecture, doesn't sync well to Tesla. So until Tesla makes more V4 chargers really can't use the tesla network
Kia doesn't have any EVs that charge at 350kW. They are simply stating that to achieve the stated charge times you have to use a 350kW charger. It's slightly misleading the way they label that. 230kW to 240kW is about where they top out.
I love the KN filters too, but KN hasn't become an auto manufacturer... this is the new KIA logo. (Although the first time I saw Kia's new logo I had the same thought you did: 'whoa, that guy loves his KN filters, he even chiseled off the manufacturer badge and put a KN badge on his car...")
Which is why I believe Teslas can only compare to the Japanese and Koreans even though their price range is German… Fancy screen and speed but that’s about it. As long as you don’t want a track car any other EV choice out there is better.
The EV9 is the best non-Tesla SUV on the market now. It's efficiency is poor at 2.8mi/kWhr, about the same as the Cybertruck, but that vehicle is far larger. It's also pretty expensive; the cheapest AWD model at my dealer is $66.5k. It is supposed to qualify for the tax credit next year, which would make it very reasonable, but Trump may kill that when elected. The big barrier for me is the lack of Self driving. After using FSD in all my driving, I would have a hard time buying a new vehicle that would never support it. I would also not buy one until they had full access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
I havent charged on public charging in almost a year, I could careless about Tesla SC stations tbh, in my experience, I've found plenty of decent reliable charging stations. Rove is an up and coming big charging stations which includes TSC V4s.
We've got a Y but need a 3rd row. We want to add another EV to our garage. Took the family and test drove an EV9. The interior is smaller than a Telluride and my kids 17,15,12 said it was "too small inside". Oh well. Maybe we'll get a gently used X or a new Telluride.
As many have said the lack of supercharger compatibility makes this a big no for now. Once they convert to nacs and assuming the charge speeds are good then id consider it. For now if you want a good 3 row its Rivian or wait in my opinion.
I doubt charge speeds on super chargers will be too fast any time soon since e-gmp doesn’t play nice with superchargers. I wonder how the ID Buzz will do on superchargers when it’s here for sale and can charge on them.
About using them at Super Chargers: because KIA is using 800 Volt System and Tesla Super Chargers are only 400v it seems that in Europe cars only charge with speeds in average between 70-80 kw/h... Maximum seems to be around 100kw but it seems no one has reached that. Many even report with the EV6 that they get below 50kw/h - so be aware that super chargers might not work great in the US to.

The "summon" feature (smart park assistant) isn't working for you because that is a Land trim. Need to pay to unlock it, whereas it is standard on GT-Line.
Have an EV9 and have never had an issue. Will be taking a 5000 mile round trip this winter snowbirding south. Using A Better Route Planner app to plan and it appears no problems ahead given all the available charging stations located along Route. Try this app out and it may change your point of view.
I really wanted to love the EV9 but when I test drove it, I was really disappointed. Super confusing controls, there’s literally 3 buttons labeled “mode”. The pedal has delay for some reason when driving it, and the software and navigation is horrible. The ride itself was great, but everything else was subpar coming from a Tesla.
use auto regen mode which is based on computational calculations and road conditions, much better than ipedal max. i charge it at home and never had any problems, and very rarely I have come across situation where I need to charge on the go. one has to plan if you buy an EV
nice job Ryan. Until NACS it’s a no. Isn’t it crazy how no one wanted to work with Tesla on the charging infrastructure? How much does Tesla charge legacy customers? 20-30% more? I’m surprised this hasn’t been a topic.
TIme is money and if you buy a EV that is not Tesla be prepared to spend time and money looking around for crappy third party chargers. The charging network is at least 30-50% of the EV ownership experience. Why buy other than Tesla? Time is money.
Great video Ryan. I'm a fan of Hyundai/Kia cars, and appreciate thier EV offerings. They would always be my second choice for an EV but until NACS is adopted by all Manufacturers they aren't ready yet. My modle Y and soon delivered Cybertruck will be the benchmark. But until Elon announces the Tesla V(van)I made that up, then it's a good option for large families.
The EV3 is also very good. Tesla will be looking over their should apart from the software these other makers over much better bang for your buck even their software is very good and will soon be as good.
In Australia, they are way overpriced, selling next to none, 130k. Ridiculous for that brand to be over 100k, no-one is paying that here. Kia isn't luxury, it's higher tech, don't confuse the two.
Loss the start button. Please. Phone key is a must and shouldn't be subscription. The max regen should not be something u need to adjust every time getting in. If they can over the air update that would be great. Tesla does it right.
No comparison, Kia / Hyundai builds a better quality vehicle. tesla is a technology company, not a great auto company. But the inferstructer is still crap. The range and charging times are too. Tesla needs to build a better quality vehicle and a true 3rd row, not a 100k 21/2 row. And not a 100k either !!!

If only they have a reliable and available dc charger network. Also, having a clutch to disengage a drivetrain is not longevity-tested yet.

To use "summon" feature, press lock first, then remote start until the daytime running lights blink 3 times. "Summon" works every time.
On the EV6 have to lock twice then hit the start.
Can't wait for the EV3!!!

We had our 24 MY for a few months and then traded it in for our EV9. The only thing I miss about our MY is the sound system. That’s it.

If charging with Tesla is limited to 50 Kw as seems to be the case with other manufacturers then 3rd party charging is still going to be a challenge.

Americans do love 3-row SUVs - as a status symbol. Driving a 9-seater solo, is useless, but uselessness defines “high status!”

Teach her to use voice commands. You can pretty much do everything with voice commands.

Well the EV 9 is a true 3 row EV so I think they are really in two different categories. If you need the 3 rows then the EV 9 is going to be much more practical. I like buttons and knobs too so if I bought a Model Y I’d wait and see if I was okay with just the screen and if I still wanted a knob I’d buy a SEXY knob and then I’d be able to program it to do all the things I’d want it to do. But to me customizing the knob would be fun and I imagine for others it might be a chore. One of the things I like about the model Y is that there is such a huge market to allow you to customize it. But I wouldn’t consider it worth the money to put a 3rd row in a Model Y, just seems like it isn’t large enough. Finally, happy wife, happy life. Not so bad that she gets what she wants I imagine.
Good vehicle, but things they need to improve: being able to charge faster on the supercharger network (it will only be able to pull 87 kW from a 250 kW V3), moving the charge port to the driver's rear for better supercharger access, and the software- super dated, needs an update 🤔
It's not the vehicles fault, I'm able to charge perfectly fine on DC fast chargers at up to 250 kw, no issues with the position of the charge port at any charger I've been to.
@@JuanDavila That's fine when you can find an EA charger that works. I wouldn't drive from San Diego to New York (something I've done multiple times in our Tesla) without access to the supercharger network 😳
@@teslasnek I understand Teslas charger infrastructure is better but again, not the vehicles fault that Tesla won't let it charge past 87kw, it shouldn't deter people from buying it, I've done many 500 miles trips absolutely fine, super comfy ride, charges super fast, I absolutely love it.

I keep dreaming about Tesla VAN - not commercial, but full big family swiss army knife. Take all the best from Kia Carnival, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, which is 8 seats, childseat tilt, ability to reposition middle 2nd row seat to have it in opposite direction, sliding doors and all of the space in the deep trunk. I am sure tesla vould also find the way for frunk as well. There we have it - Tesla model V
I just got my first EV car two weeks ago, was debating between a Tsela or Kia. I ended up with the EV9. Best decision I've made, love it! Got a great deal and saved me over 30K. I would have chosen the Ev9 even if it was priced the same as a model X.
As someone who just charges at home, the lack of public chargers means nothing to me. They’re all terrible and broken anyways 😂.
Tesla MY owner- wanted a new EV for my birthday (#65), that was not a Tesla. Looked at all of them and was ready to buy an EV9 GT trim. Decided on one last test drive of the LR AWD Tesla MX, a design that has been around for almost 10 years (with essentially
one refresh).
I sit in the MX and immediately feel like I am back into the future compared to the EV9. The Tesla big screen, top notch tech, comfort, FSD, adjustable air suspension, performance (which I really don’t need),and Tesla supercharger network were way too much to give up. Kia is making great strides and the EV 9 is a compelling product- just not for me. Yes, I did buy a MX (tax incentive model) and really enjoy it. I drive 40 miles a day and regularly drive cross country-really no other choice.
Now that is a "cyber truck".
My concern would be the decreased reliability implied by the large number of switches and controls not on the screen.
The rate of failure of switches has to be right up there with an honest politician There are cars from the 1960s with switches that are still working.

As long as cars have had physical buttons this has never been an issue

As a former Genesis owner, I'd never trust them for electronics. Look how many Hyundais and Kias have dead tail lights Then you gotta deal with the terrible dealerships. No thanks.

Interesting. I have had my Niro EV from 2019 and have driven nearly 220,000 km since getting it new. None of my lights have needed changing. Only one issue so far and this just happened this year. My AC isn't working well. It still blows cool air but for some reason it's not very strong. This has been the only issue.

Based on the horrid charging experience starting at around the 17:55 mark, there’s no way I’d buy one of these until they get Tesla Supercharger access.
You can use them on the Tesla supercharger network now, but with the 800V architecture, doesn't sync well to Tesla. So until Tesla makes more V4 chargers really can't use the tesla network

Kia doesn't have any EVs that charge at 350kW. They are simply stating that to achieve the stated charge times you have to use a 350kW charger. It's slightly misleading the way they label that. 230kW to 240kW is about where they top out.
The EV9 is currently part of a ICCU recall. I would wait until they fix the ICCU properly with the next platform.

My Chevy Bolt has the rear view mirror/camera option but I can't use while driving because it gives me motion sickness.
The EV9 is the best non-Tesla SUV on the market now. It's efficiency is poor at 2.8mi/kWhr, about the same as the Cybertruck, but that vehicle is far larger. It's also pretty expensive; the cheapest AWD model at my dealer is $66.5k. It is supposed to qualify for the tax credit next year, which would make it very reasonable, but Trump may kill that when elected. The big barrier for me is the lack of Self driving. After using FSD in all my driving, I would have a hard time buying a new vehicle that would never support it. I would also not buy one until they had full access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
Definitely nicer interior than a Tesla (coming from a Tesla owner). Not sure about the exterior boxy design.
I havent charged on public charging in almost a year, I could careless about Tesla SC stations tbh, in my experience, I've found plenty of decent reliable charging stations. Rove is an up and coming big charging stations which includes TSC V4s.
Looks like a GREAT car...BUT the supercharging ain't there...too bad.
We've got a Y but need a 3rd row. We want to add another EV to our garage. Took the family and test drove an EV9. The interior is smaller than a Telluride and my kids 17,15,12 said it was "too small inside". Oh well. Maybe we'll get a gently used X or a new Telluride.
A used X would be even smaller then the EV9, how would that be an option if size is the EV9 issue

According to my local Kia dealership the EV9 is actually larger than the Telluride.
As many have said the lack of supercharger compatibility makes this a big no for now. Once they convert to nacs and assuming the charge speeds are good then id consider it. For now if you want a good 3 row its Rivian or wait in my opinion.
I doubt charge speeds on super chargers will be too fast any time soon since e-gmp doesn’t play nice with superchargers. I wonder how the ID Buzz will do on superchargers when it’s here for sale and can charge on them.
About using them at Super Chargers: because KIA is using 800 Volt System and Tesla Super Chargers are only 400v it seems that in Europe cars only charge with speeds in average between 70-80 kw/h... Maximum seems to be around 100kw but it seems no one has reached that. Many even report with the EV6 that they get below 50kw/h - so be aware that super chargers might not work great in the US to.

The "summon" feature (smart park assistant) isn't working for you because that is a Land trim. Need to pay to unlock it, whereas it is standard on GT-Line.

Have an EV9 and have never had an issue. Will be taking a 5000 mile round trip this winter snowbirding south. Using A Better Route Planner app to plan and it appears no problems ahead given all the available charging stations located along Route. Try this app out and it may change your point of view.
Charging infrastructure is horrible! It definitely needs much improvement.
I really wanted to love the EV9 but when I test drove it, I was really disappointed. Super confusing controls, there’s literally 3 buttons labeled “mode”. The pedal has delay for some reason when driving it, and the software and navigation is horrible. The ride itself was great, but everything else was subpar coming from a Tesla.

use auto regen mode which is based on computational calculations and road conditions, much better than ipedal max. i charge it at home and never had any problems, and very rarely I have come across situation where I need to charge on the go. one has to plan if you buy an EV

TIme is money and if you buy a EV that is not Tesla be prepared to spend time and money looking around for crappy third party chargers. The charging network is at least 30-50% of the EV ownership experience. Why buy other than Tesla? Time is money.
I wish more cars had manual seat controls. I think only the driver side should have automatic controls on it.
EV9 with NACS might tempt me to change over from Model Y.

Great video Ryan. I'm a fan of Hyundai/Kia cars, and appreciate thier EV offerings. They would always be my second choice for an EV but until NACS is adopted by all Manufacturers they aren't ready yet. My modle Y and soon delivered Cybertruck will be the benchmark. But until Elon announces the Tesla V(van)I made that up, then it's a good option for large families.
The EV3 is also very good. Tesla will be looking over their should apart from the software these other makers over much better bang for your buck even their software is very good and will soon be as good.
In Australia, they are way overpriced, selling next to none, 130k. Ridiculous for that brand to be over 100k, no-one is paying that here. Kia isn't luxury, it's higher tech, don't confuse the two.

No comparison, Kia / Hyundai builds a better quality vehicle. tesla is a technology company, not a great auto company. But the inferstructer is still crap. The range and charging times are too. Tesla needs to build a better quality vehicle and a true 3rd row, not a 100k 21/2 row. And not a 100k either !!!
