    Markets are so different (said that many times). I have had EV9 GT Line for 2 months now. Absolutely fine with the built-in navigation and trip planning. We have a lot of 350 kW chargers in Finland. The only minor downside during extreme cold weather is when the time car needs to precondition the battery. The maximum power used for preconditioning on EV9 (the one I saw myself) was 6.5 kWh. That might be too low for an almost 100 kWh battery pack in subzero temperatures. Things EV9 owners must remember:
    1) The car needs at least 40 minutes to get the battery pack to the optimal temperature in a subzero environment.
    2) The best charging ranges from 10% to 65% (fastest).
    3) 55% of the battery would allow you to go 200-250 km or 125-155 miles (depending on conditions, like rain, wind, etc.). That is 2-3 hours of driving. If you are someone like me who wants to stop every 3 hours, that would be absolutely fine.
    In Finland, EV9 top spec with all features = 90000 EUR (97500 USD current rate). Tesla Model X (non-plaid), 7 seater with basic Autopilot = 116000 EUR (125.500 USD current rate). We are talking about a 28.000 USD difference between the two. Tesla Model X is over 25% more expensive in Finland (also smaller and older).
    That makes buyers easier to choose 😁
    Thanks, Out of Spec Reviews, for your job and great videos!

    Hello. Ev9 GT owner here. I agree with prettty much entire review except for one point. I’m 40 and drove ICE cars all my life, my transition to this EV was pretty much like any other car. So I disagree with your point about Teslas being “easier” and “don’t have to think about it”. In my opinion, transitioning to car without a start button, without a drivers display (all center screen), without any tactile buttons and having to do everything on the screen. That’s way more stressful and more difficult for people that are used to driving non teslas. I would hate it to mess with the center for everything.
    So I disagree with what u said about you won’t recommend it to new EV drivers because it’s a bigger learning curve and because the Navi doesn’t take u to the right charger on your long trips.
    In my opinion, this is a natural transition. Way Easier than it would be to transition to a Tesla. I bought it because it’s a great car that happened to be an EV.
    But otherwise, great review. The stupid orange light I couldn’t find out what it was for until I watched your previous review on the ev9. What a stupid light, eh?😅

    Took delivery of my EV9 about a week ago, and after having three other EV’s in the last year and a half, this one is superior in technology, comfort, and lives up to the SUV class, unlike others that call their vehicle an SUV. I did a 4400 Km trip last week across Europe in a EV9, first edition like they call it in my market, seven seats, all full with kids. I loved it. I had a EV6 before so I was comparing.
    What I liked: the precondition information is clearer now; the comfort, the drive is solid.
    What I need to check better: The GPS took me to back roads unexpectedly, even when the rapid path was selected. It happened more than once for places I'm was sure were not the best. I had to explicitly select highways.
    What I expected: With my EV6 I got 239KW charges. But the charging curve was not a straight line. With EV9, the maximum I got was 209 KW, however the charging curve was very stable and constant. The battery is huge, so it works, but I expected more.

    So I left my car in utility mode for my dog sake and I was able to lock it. It’s not convenient but if you sit in the car and lock the doors, then you get out the drivers door and pull out the mechanical key out of the key fob you can manually lock the driver door. I really hope they address this so the fob can lock the car but this is definitely a workaround. This is my dog mode for our IONIQ 5.👍🏼 These software settings are for the most part, set and forget. Let me offer an example. When have you gone in and turned on a beep. 😁🎯 That said I agree the navigation isn’t the best and should let you arrive at what ever percentage you want to. I still use it to precondition but if that isn’t needed it’s screen mirroring of your favorite nav app. I hope the manual precondition comes to all Hyundai/Kia’s so you can do this without the connection service or while using those app nav’s. Fort Collins Kia has quite the offer. 💯 49:18

      @@lahipster3172 Yes. And it's sponsored by Kia America, so every dealer gets it to pass through to customers. It came off the same price. This is important to note because some dealers try to claim they are giving you a discount because they take credit for the $7,500. But you should be able to get the dealer to discount on top of the $7,500 from Kia corporate. All Kia is doing is taking advantage of a loophole in the federal tax credit where Kia gets this tax credit for every lease vehicle it owns during the lease and they are passing it on to customers. Tesla and most other EV brands are doing the same.

    Regular listener. Thank you for the reviews and great breakdown on the EV-9. I'm one for maximizing efficiency so I still gravitate toward Model Y/Aptera. I appreciate the point made about the plastic wrap on the EV-9 when it's delivered. Along those lines, what are your thoughts on wrapping cars? My understanding is that these wraps only last for 5-7 years and then all the plastic is pulled off and.... thrown away? Also seems concerning from the sustainability perspective. You guys noticed an indicator light for the main battery charging the 12V. The location of the light looks like it would be visible when the hood is up and a technician may be working on the 12V. If I were a tech working on the electrical system I'd appreciate having an easy reference, in the indicator light, for whether the main battery was sending power to the 12V. Just a possibility.

    I would be a fan of manual battery pre-conditioning for my EV6. The Kia navigation software is still missing so many charging sites. I end up wasting tons of time trying to find a site I know EXISTS but cannot find on the app. Until Kia reliably lists fast charging locations, I would love the ability to manually start battery pre-conditioning 20 or 30 minutes from where I know I will find a fast charger. I drive to Québec in the winter and cold batteries are the worst when it comes to cahrging. It's my choice to take the power penalty or not if I misjudge how long it takes to warm up the battery.

They are nice but in Canada to get bucket seats its a TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR upgrade for premiums or FOURTEEN THOUSAND bucks for GT upgrade. Charging question: if the voltage of the "big battery" ev9 sits closer to 400v, does that mean it will charge better on the supercharger network(when available) than a comparable ev6, Ioniq 5, etc. If I am remembering my physics correctly, higher voltage requires higher Amps which is why the 800v systems don't charge as well on Supercharger.

  • @evkx
    @evkx 2 месяца назад

    One explenation for the low voltage is that to get room for the capacity they had to choose larger cells that gave better power density. And if the cells in percent is larger than the difference in cell package there is room for less cells. And therfor less cells in serial and lower voltage. I belive this is one of the cons against 800 volt since it limits which cells to use. (if we belive larger is better)

Especially when then family is getting in and out of the car often, the logic of only one handle popping out sometimes is frustrating. Secondly, and this is more a minor annoyance, but the transition to cruise control is choppy and uncomfortable. You have to fully let off the pedal before cruise control engages and the lag between letting off and it actually capturing the speed causes a small but annoying jolt in acceleration. Otherwise it's honestly a great family hauler for us.

    • @scotts2286
      @scotts2286 2 месяца назад

      The batteries lifespan doesn't lessen if you bring it to 0% once and a while. Most EV's drivers never bring it anywhere close to 0%. I agree with Kyle. 0% should actually mean 0%.

    Supposedly, ordering a Euro V2L gives you 240v. I have the NA one at 120v but would love a 240v one. I just never saw a confirmation it actually works to order a second V2L.

  • @markgeezey1809
    @markgeezey1809 2 месяца назад

    Like the EV6 there is a work around so you can have it in utility mode and lock the doors and go. So you can leave a dog in etc. plus in europe the V2L is 230volt up to 3.5kw power. Must be different in the States. Love your review but I do think a little bit of nit picking that with a bit of looking on forums and you will find many easy work arounds. Same with Teslas and others unless you know then you don’t know. 🤷🏻‍♂️. You will also find a lot of the beeps is due to EU legislation that require this. However in the US it isn’t required and I guess KIA have just decided to stick with one type of setting.

  • @angryGTS

    Kia's spec sheet says it's 552 volt for the big battery and 632 volt for the small battery. They never mention that it's 800 volt.

      They market its 800v infrastructure pretty extensively, even if never quite saying that's the exact rating of the battery. They are certainly being coy throwing it around. I found at least 10 references in this doc. www.kia.com/content/dam/kwcms/kme/se/sv/assets/contents/utility/specifications/ev9/kia-ev9-keyfacts.pdf

    I test drove an ev9 2 months ago. It is still on the lot and hasn't been sold.
    Issues I have with the ev9:
    1. No 2nd row bench seat in the two lowest trims. Why own something this big that can only fit six.
    2. No heat pump in the two lowest trims.
    3. Turning radius. Get used to doing k turns.
    4. Resale value. It will loose 60% with just 30,000 miles on it. And if new battery tech comes out, it will loose even more.
    I wonder if the Hyundai Ioniq 7 will be more efficient because it has a more aerodynamic shape?

    As an owner now, I agree the software is the weak link. The Infotainment UI is very poor. As noted it's feature rich on paper, but just poorly executed. The user profile settings can't tie to either the key fob or the digital keys, so the car doesn't recognize you and you have to wait for very slow loading screens to change and confirm your profile on the screen. And the Media screens are comically bad. Like most newer cars, you can save all your preferred channels across SiriusXM and FM, etc. to Favorites to just browse your go-to channels. But unlike every other car, the EV9 forgets to return to Favorites mode every time you turn on the car. So if you're last channel listened to when you turned off the car happened to be an XM channel, it will start-up in the every channel XM mode instead of favorites and it takes several screen taps to switch it back to Favorites at start-up. And forget wanting to know the name of the song or band you're listening too unless you want to drill three screens down and then have it scroll across a tiny corner of the screen furtherest from the driver while the majority of the screen is literally unused. Whoever designed this UI almost had to go out of their way to make bad choices -- like they had a contest to see who could make the worst user interactions and went with them.

    as for the NAV - well, I don't use it in either the LIGHTNING or the EV9, I just find them way more ANNOYING to manage than just using my GoogleMaps on my phone. I'll use the truck's APP to find charging stops, if I don't already know all of them anyway, regardless of whether I'm driving the Ford or the Kia. I even use my Ford Pass App to ACTIVATE stations for the Kia, since Kia decided NOT to provide any 'integrated' collection of charging Activation and Payment method thru their own app, like Ford does, which I LOVE!
    (I do, though, APPRECIATE the 1,000kwh of FREE ElectrifyAmerica charging from KIA - you just have to load that 'discount' PLAN into your EA account/app to be able to activate stations to use your 'free' amounts - that will take SOME TIME to use all of!)

    41:18 - There's a workaround that folks have figured out to have Utility Mode serve more like a Dog Mode with locked doors. It works on the Ioniq 5, so I'd assume it works here. And I'll preface this: it's not great! I wish they had a real Dog Mode. But, when you are leaving the car in Utility Mode, roll down your window and exit the car. Stick your hand in the open window and lock it. Hit the window up button to close the window. Now, your car is in Utility Mode and locked! To unlock the car, you need to either use the physical key from inside the fob or the Bluetooth connection from your phone. Again, none of this is ideal. Hyundai/Kia/Gensis SHOULD have a Dog Mode. But this method works ok.
