  • As a regular visitor to Asian shops I quite often see people with a shopping list filled with ingredients they don't recognise or are infamiliar with. This impromptu shop tour explores a huge range of ethnic ingredients that I've become familiar with as a Foodie for over 20 years and also living and travelling extensively throughout Asia and the rest of the world. Sit back and enjoy, this is a long video packed with knowledge which I hope to expand on over the years to come. This was just the tip of the iceberg, I could have stayed in the shop for another hour or so, so if you have any questions please drop them in the comments section.

    Well Steven. The only thing I did not learn from that video was "Where is it?" The shop.Smethwich is quite a big place with many shops.

    I'd appreciate if you could share this video via WhatsApp etc, I've spent the past 20 years attaining this knowledge through travels and gaining this knowledge and I'm hoping this video will give this information provided within the video to others., so they can also go to the Asian market well informed

    Westerners who distain Asian cookery place themselves at a great culinary disadvantage because the Asiatic tradition is very rich in great dishes: Dear Chef Steven Heap, your knowledge and experience amazes me, thanks!

    Fascinating Steve👌🏻
    Wish I had something like those shops near me!
    There a few Asian supermarkets nearby which have the standard fresh chillies, coriander, methi etc but nothing like the choice you had there.
    The mother’s pickles are nice and I’ve tried loads but I really like the Fudco hot mixed pickle which I can get in my local Sainsbury’s Asian section.
    Mr Naga is my goto and goes in most of my meat dishes and marinades, love the stuff😊
    Thank you for sharing 👍🏻

    Great video Steven...removes some of the confusion when you go into these shops. Quick question...do you have a view on using mustard oil for some indian food. There are reports that it's not approved for food use but people do use it?

    • @StevenHeapRecipes
      @StevenHeapRecipes  6 месяцев назад +1

      Good question, I have a video all about it. There are some that are for external use only and some edible. Mustard oil contains erucic acid that is banned in the UK but you can get rid of this acid by heating it to smoking point before adding any other ingredients

    Ive actually had to explain the tej patta bay leaf confusion to our local asian shops. I guess they know already what to use and dont care what im bothered about..
    The ghee I always make myself as many big indian brands use an additive I would not want to eat and its so easy to make.
    recently Ive been cooking up a very short grain rice from bangladesh specifically, called gobindobog its very nutty and a bit sweet. beautiful design on a cloth bag.

      @StevenHeapRecipes  2 месяца назад

      Yes, it's a common issue. The rice sounds nice. I'll check it out. I sometimes use a bengali short grain rice called kalijeera

    Hi Steve, great video and very informative. Do you know of any of these supermarkets close or in Walsall? Also, where’s the best place to source Balti dishes from?

    • @StevenHeapRecipes
      @StevenHeapRecipes  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Paul,
      I'm not too familiar with Walsall but I generally find Smethwick the best place for these kinds of shops. Warley supermarket is a really good choice too, not too far from Walsall. Proper balti pans are very rate. I've only even see one for sale in a shop in Wing Yip in Manchester several years back. You could try The Original Balti company who sell them but they're a little small, imposed with logo on the bottom of the pan and are overly priced, maybe because they're the only company I know of that sell them. Not sure if they do anymore
