Katheryn Howard was not an adulteress.
She had been abused since childhood (most likely since the age of 8), and was beheaded at 19 (or at 21 at the latest).

She was definitely abused and taken advantage of but most modern historians do agree that she did have affairs during her marriage to Henry. While she was villainised by Tudor standards as a sexually promiscuous woman and adulteress, in modern day understanding, Catherine would be considered a victim. The one loving relationship in her life was with someone her own age but it cost her her life.

      wasn't she 17 when beheaded

@@duckon_thecat2- some historians believe she was 17, some others think she was 19.
Registers of births were hardly a thing back then.

      Already a wife at 19?! What?! 😅😂

@@kellysy177- not unusual at all, back in those days.
Catherine of Aragon married Arthur, Henry VIII's brother, at 16 (she had been promised at 3).
Catherine Parr married at 17. When she married Henry VIII she was 31, and she was getting married for the third time already.
When Anne Boleyn married Henry VIII she was already considered too long in the tooth (she was 34!) to get married for the first time - and, most of all, to have children.

Henry VIII had many suspected illegitimate children but only acknowledged one, Henry Fitzroy the first Duke of Richmond and Somerset, born 15 June 1519. His mother was Elizabeth Blount, the lady-in-waiting of Catherine of Aragon!

I love that Elizabeth Blount, aka Bessie, is the drummer for the band.

Henry seriously considered naming his illegitimate son, named Henry of course, by Elizabeth Blount as his heir. He also considered having his daughter with Catherine of Aragon marry her illegitimate brother and them being crowned.

The pope was ready to give a dispensation for the marriage between half siblings but only if Henry promised to give up his chase for Anne Boleyn. He refused, but it ended up being irrelevant in the end because he turned against Anne, and later his illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy died in 1537 aged 17.

Six is a great musical, I got to see it on the West End last year as a birthday gift. Great night!
And Henry did have sons out of wedlock, sometimes with his wives friends/ladies in waiting! And instead of sending them away, he recognised at least one as his son and gave land etc. I think he died as a teen. But anyway, a legitimate son was wanted to mean an easy succession of the crown from Father to son for the next king. Prior to Henry's father being on the throne, two factions of royal families had been fighting over the throne in something called The war of the Roses (both the Tudor and Lancaster family crests were roses, one white and one red. It's also why there was multiple rose references in the song) and so Henry probably had that in mind too. He wanted a legitimate son to become king after him rather than more bloody internal warring. Sorry for the impromptu history lesson lol
