Semantic change (or drift) is the concept in linguistics that you were getting at. It’s the change in a word’s meaning as its use changes over time. A common example is the word “awesome” which originally would have meant “awe-inspiring” but weakened over time to now mean “very good”. Additionally, if people are not aware of the specific technical meanings of jargon, they may muddle up some concepts without realizing it.

An updated version of the BPD deep dive would be wonderful! I think it was done very early on because it's much shorter compared to the others. So happy to hear Kirk's take on boundaries I don't think I've heard this level of expanding from him on this! Will thank FPL too!

Took a film class where watched Festen, and the domestic violence scenes were super triggering for me. At the time I didn’t know anything about trauma and PTSD, and definitely not that I had it. I spent that entire evening devastated and crying and didn’t understand why. A few years later I took a class in how to handle student disclosure of sexual assault (I worked in higher ed) of my own accord, and it threw me into a years long depression and PTSD. That and a subsequent (minor) car accident destroyed my mental health and eventually the only secure relationship I ever had… so yeah, it upsets me when people don’t understand the need for trigger warnings for those of us who have PTSD (whether we know we have it or not).

This was super interesting. It was a completely new theory for me. Clicking the video I thought it was going to be about the more common pop culture idea of setting boundaries in different types of relationships. But this was a pleasant surprise. Not sure I'll be able to apply it in my life because it sounds really hard, but I'll definitely try to keep this perspective in mind and probably revisit this episode again in future.

I really enjoy this discussion over how to recognize what it really means to be a narcissist, or to have a certain mental disorder.

I like to use trigger warning and content warning to try to cover the spectrum. I don’t agree that it isn’t harming someone without PTSD to be required to watch graphic scenes of se*ual a**ault for a class. Of course the distress someone might experience in that scenario is very different from a genuine PTSD trauma response, but it’s not insignificant. My husband has PTSD and I look up trigger warnings before we start a new show or watch a movie to try to give him warning for his triggers, after an experience where he wasn’t warned ahead of time and was deeply triggered and distressed. I had an ED, and while I don’t have PTSD surrounding ED behaviours I seek out content warnings regarding eating disorders to avoid that content when I am in a more vulnerable place (as advised by my therapist) to do my best to prevent relapse. I believe my needs and mental health are also important, even if I don’t have PTSD. I don’t see why providing warnings, especially surrounding entertainment, so people can choose what they expose themselves to is a bad thing. We also warn about other aspects of media, like flashing lights to be inclusive to those with photo-sensitive epilepsy. It’s a kindness, in my opinion.

Membrane is the word for the cell boundary. Most specifically plasma membrane. In general, they are referred as biological membranes, which are semipermeable, letting some things to go in and out.

Mid-listen right now and though this is 6 month old episode I felt like commenting anyway.
In regards to the things you said about words and their use. I'm not well-read and certainly not formally educated in neither Psychology or Linguistic, beyond the very basics of both from a highschool and introductory college level, but there must be some interesting interdisciplinary studies that could be conducted on this topic. No doubt there has been already. While listening it got me thinking about the subject a bit, and I believe the most likely reason for the acceleration of this issue is social media and the over-abundance of information today. With little to no barrier to entry for many people where ideally you might want to have some knowledge before tackling other things. I can think of a whole bunch of other interdependent and meshing factors (sorry if my word-choices are odd - 2nd language) that are conceivably conspiring to make the issue more prevalent, but I'm a bit too tired right now to articulate them coherently. They're mostly to do with how people socialize and make their presence known online and the incentives that exists both in terms of benefits socially as well as financially in some cases. All speculative really, but either way it would be interesting to see some research on the topic. Maybe it would go some way towards helping us deal with the whole culture war issue more constructively too since language is often such a hot-button issue there.
Maybe that was only so much word-sallad, but if it was I suppose there are worse sins. Loving the podcast generally (recent discovery :) ) and the episode with iDubbz in particular really got me thinking about some stuff. Both in the case of myself and others.
    Best wishes from Sweden

When your vehicle is running like crap and eventually won't turn over at all and you ask your dad for help.
He says pull out the spark plug so you do.......then coolant just flows on out.😳🤣
