    I originally had another game planned for this slot, but due to me stuffing up the rules, didn't get the number of plays in. So, off the borrowed shelf we bring Imhotep, one of my fav games I do not own. I've been wanting to review this for a couple of years, but only recently remembered to ask to borrow my friends copy. Anyway, this is a great low complexity game and one of my top foundation games. It should really be on the top 100, but i think i forgot to log it into my played games list until recently so it may not have got ranked. I think it would be a very odd group that didnt get something out of this one.

    I've played this thrice, all at the local board game café; I've had a blast with it each time, though two of my friends didn't get on with it. Loved the shipment and docks system! Sending a ship to a spot that most of the players onboard don't want to go is just as satisfying as docking a ship at a site to block other players from getting there.
    Plus it's got the Egypt theme, and that's one I'm almost always into. It's one of the reasons I own Kemet, haha.

      I think the ship moving is the secret sauce, cause thats where the "OH DAMN YOU" moments in the game come. So good, so mean

    I'd been in the board game hobby for years before I played Imhotep at a local board game cafe and it quickly became one of my favorites. Also, quality insights from your intern, see if she would want to guest on another episode!

    Agree it's a great 'foundation' game. One of the games I use for my twice monthly (U3A) board game group for 'retired' folk in the UK.
    Just a minor point, the small player board that holds your blocks is the 'sled', the 'quarry' is your reserve blocks that you refill your sled from. So when you play a red card, you take a block from your reserve 'quarry' blocks. All other blocks played come from your sled.

    Imhotep!, he was condemned to endure the Hom-Dai, the worst of all ancient curses.
    One so horrible, it had never before been bestowed.
    He was to remain sealed inside his sarcophagus, be undead for all of eternity.
    The Magi would never allow him to be released, for he would arise a walking disease, a plague upon mankind, an unholy flesh-eater with the strength of ages, power over the sands, and the Glory of INVINCIBILITY!!

    I would imagine that the image in this video of Arnold Vosloo with his mouth wide open would be confusing to those unaware that he portrayed Imhotep in the movie The Mummy in the late '90s.
    Also: the official neoprene playmat is too slick not to get for this game.

      The corner character is 95% of the time Clausewitz, who is the channel mascot. But we have a tradition of putting in other ones as well. I think the most obscure one was probably putting in a beastie boy on the sabotage thumbnail. They are just for fun

  • @tinstargames

    This is an example of how simple/complex is a weird thing because this game is really hard and a huge brain burner whereas something like ark nova has more rules but the complexity is really low.
    I would never recommend Imhotep as a foundation game it’s way too tactical

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  2 года назад

      None of that is due to rules overhead though, which is exactly my thought of what makes a good foundation game. Low rules complexity, but plenty of bite. See also Santorini

    • @tinstargames
      @tinstargames 2 года назад

      @@3MBG I guess I’d rather teach people to handle a few extra rules then expect them to be able to handle complex strategy…but that’s also because I am terrible at strategy and cannot stand Imhotep or santorini.

    This game was robbed. It should have won the 2016 Spiel des Jahres.
