Stuck Bicycle Cleat Bolt: How to remove that stuck cleat

  • Cleats need to be replaced from time to time whether they be Look cleats or SPD cleats. For cleats, some last longer than others. The brass cleats for Crank Brothers and Time pedals don't have an incredible lifespan, but the hardened steel of Shimano's SPD cleats do. Still - they wear out, and as it's a slow process it tends to go unnoticed until you're pulling out accidentally. Stuck,stripped or rounded off bike clean bolt can present a problem when it's time to replace a work cleat. This can occur with both Look style cleats but also SPD cleats.
    Clean the bicycle cleat to remove any dirt or debris. If you cannot remove the bolt with a good quality hex key, some bolts, especially Look cleats, allow for the use of a straight edge screw driver. Spray some WD-40 or other penetrating liquid around the bolt. Let sit for 5-10 minutes and repeat the spray. Using a heavy duty straight edge, push down hard on the bolt and turn. I've been able to remove most Look cleats with this method but you do need a good size screw driver and must push down forcibly.
    If that fails or you can't use a straight edge, try some of the techniques in our video on stuck hex bolt removal shown in the upper left (point).
    1. Tap the hex key gently with a rubber mallet. Don't tap to hard or you'll ruin your hex key.
    2. Use a Torx key attachment for your ratchet wrench. You may need one size larger then the hex key itself
    3. Take the bike shoe to your bicycle mechanic.
    Other options include drilling though the bolt using a drill the same size as the bolt, to drill through the bolt until the cleat is free, or using a hack saw to cut through the plastic of the cleat to free up the cleat and bolts. Both risk damage to the the bike shoe.

    Of course, for a little preventive maintenance , a little dab of grease on the bolt threads, will prevent future issues. Nice video. KB.

      Absolutely. Always use the proper thread lock (grease, anti-seize, Fiber Grip) as specified by your manufacturer. Here, just a bit of grease as you point our helps prevent the problem. Regards, Tony

    Hi just wanted to say that this actually bloody worked I hammered the Allen key in and 5 completely rounded and seemingly broken bolts came undone and my shoes are saved and live to fight another day. Top man

    I drilled out a couples of such bolts from SIDI shoes. The method requires care, but works.

    This was really helpful, thanks! The key tip for me was using an mallet on the Allen wrench.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  3 года назад

      Yes, a light tap on the Allen wrench works well. Don't tap to hard or you may ruin the Allen wrench itself. Regards, Tony

    I used vice grips on the front part of the cleat and turned the who cleat. Might be a bit of damage to the cleat, but it was being replaced...

      How did you manage to remove the cleat after you were able to turn it with the vise grips? I will also have a video coming out early next month on some other measures which can be used as a last resort. Thanks and regards, Tony

    I didn't have a two-sided extractor, but I used what I had and then used a flat head to pull it out.

      Good job. In the video, I'm not using a two-sided extractor but just a hex key or torque wrench key. One could also try a drill extractor set as in the following video:

    I used a Dremel to cut a groove in a worn bolt to fit my screw driver and was able to remove the bolt.

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 года назад

      That will work, but you have to be careful not to cut the shoe itself. Once you've made the cut with the Dremel, tap the screw driver lightly with a hammer to wedge it down into the grove. Thanks Jay.

    What kinds of sprays have you used to try to free up the bolt?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 года назад

      I've used Kock'er Loose Penetrating Oil. Helped me a great deal when restoring vintage bicycles. On stock cleat bolt, it may or may not help, but worth a try. The can of spray has lasted a long time and worth the small investment. Regards, Tony

    When I try to remove bolts in my shoe, the nut inside the carbon sole appeared to be rotating with the bolt as I unscrew. I can’t think of a solution to remove it. Any ideas?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 года назад

      Most bicycle shoes have removable inner soles. You may be able to get at the nut from inside the shoe and hold it. Let me know.

    • @draledjones
      @draledjones 4 года назад

      Tony Marchand unfortunately not. They’re old Sidis. You can remove inner sole but there’s still another in removable sole between you and the nuts

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 года назад

      @@draledjones The only way to get at the nut is to cut a small hole in the inner sole to get at the nut. Your can use box cutters but wear heavy work gloves and try not to cut your fingers. Box cutters can be a dangerous tool to use. I'm not sure how this would work out, but it may be worth a try before you go out and buy new shoes. The newer bicycle shoes have a large internal bracket the the cleat bolt screws into and will not rotate as in some of the older shoes. Another option is to take it to your local bike shoe and see what they could do (probably tell you to get new shoes). Continue to give me some feedback. Regards, Tony

      I have this same problem, the nut is rotating. I can get to it to remove the screw and cleat. But unsure how to secure the nut to install new cleats. Any ideas? Shoes are in shape good and comfortable. The bracket you mentioned is intriguing. Know where to get one of these? Thanks

    What's the best way to prevent the bolts from seizing so you can remove them when you need to replace the cleat?

    • @tony10speed
      @tony10speed  4 года назад

      Clean, dry and a dab of grease on the bolt should do it. Tighten firmly and try them to see if the fore/aft and angle fits well. Then tighten firmly. Shimano suggests a torque of around 5 Nm. Probably the same for others, although other manufacturers have no listing. If your cleats keep bolts loosen although you have snugged firmly, you can use some blue Loctite on the treads. Any one else have any suggestions?
