I've had a 2013 TE449 for almost 6 months and I love it. It just feels right. Great job on the videos too I've leaned a lot especially the flywheel issue. Gonna tear mine down this week and change the bolts. Thanks Dangermouse
They aren't a bad thing, however, it is starting to get more difficult to locate some parts for them. You can still buy service parts pretty easily, but some more important parts that fail can be hard to come by.
Hi, thanks very much. The decal kit is actually black on white, looks a bit blue in the videos. It's a reproduction of the SMR449 kit that I got done by Scrubs Designz. They might still have it on file if you messaged them. They post worldwide and are great quality, thick and sticky 👍 scrubdesignz.com/
Hi, I am going to buy SMR 511, as I know their engine is almost the same, I love this model and I want it for city riding, but I'm a bit worried about service intervals, can you tell me what kind of service this engine needs in long term, except for valves checked and piston changed and is this engine reliable?
Hi and thanks for the message. The overall life of the engine will depend on many things, but the main one will be frequent oil changes. If you know the service history of the bike is good, and you continue to change the oil often then it should last ok. If it has travelled many km already, an SMR seems to need piston and rings somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000km. With poor servicing, many have had crankshaft trouble before that time. If I owned an SMR, I would run it 500km between oil changes, if ridden hard, or 1000km at most if just normal commuter riding around town. Use a good quality full synthetic 5W40 engine oil. (I use Castrol Power 1 Racing) Oil filter can be done every second oil change. Refill capacity with filter is 1150ml, 1lt without filter. 👍
@@Danger_mouse Thanks for the information. The bike looks like new, it has 5000km, was not used on track and the oil was changed every 1000 km, as I see, it's in a good condition, so I'm going to buy it. Do the valves also need to be replaced after 15000-20000 km? Also can you tell me, where can I find online store for engine parts? on ebay I saw piston with rings, but could not find valves
@@TheGooooooogi Valves are pretty much nuclear proof. They are American Del West titanium valves & almost never wear out. I would inspect & reuse them in most cases. I have 9000km/355hrs (all off road) on my TE449 & it has never needed a re-shim of the valves....ever.
+Jozef Lackovič Hi Jozef, Thanks for the suggestion. I did film parts of my engine rebuild when I did it, but decided that because of some of the specialty procedures needed, it would be best to leave a job like this to a skilled mechanic. There is a lot to watch out for. 👍
Any chance you can put me on a lead for parts for my 449. It needs nothing right now but I would like to keep it alive without having to hang it on my wall..
Hi Justin, If you are on Facebook, join our 449 group at the link below. We have many files stored there, one of which is the Alternative Parts File which lists lots of crossover parts and items off other bikes that fit. The main thing of note to prevent bike ending failures on this model is to 1/ Replace the stator screws with non Husky ones ASAP (Otherwise they will fall out and destroy the stator - see my video) 2/ Change the engine oil frequently and use 1150ml off 5W40 full synthetic MA rated oil The rest is simple maintenance. 👍 fb://group/219900571553501?ref=share
Did you have warm start issues with your TE? Mine will start cold but very difficult when warm. Too afraid to stall. Heard lots of theories and want to fix or sell the thing. Shop says its old fuel and spark plug but i dont think that theory is correct if starting from cold.
Emil Parthenides Hi Emil. There are several causes of hard starting, the main one being a weak standard battery. The bike will wind over well cold, but when hot, electrical resistance increases and they struggle to wind over. A second part to this is that if you stall the engine on the compression stroke, the auto decompressor can't operate until the engine has turned a little. Again, the standard lead acid type battery often won't do it. (as in my video above) A good quality lithium battery with at least 220cca rating is best. Another point is that on many of these bikes, they like a little throttle when hot to start. On my own bike, about 1/8 throttle when hot and it always goes first try. Definitely inspect the Spark plug and replace if worn. Certainly old fuel won't be helping either so I would change that. Consider joining our Facebook group here for more information. facebook.com/groups/219900571553501/
+Emil Parthenides OK. You can turn the idle speed up. There is a large brass idle air adjuster on THE left side of the throttle body. It is up high on the rear back a little from the plastic cable cover. Turning it out will increase idle speed. Move it in 1/4 turns.
Hi there, Unfortunately the Husky parts catalogue exhaust cover has been out of production for many years now. No longer available since about 2016. You could try contacting P3 carbon for their version if it is still available.
Hey mate - looking at getting into riding myself. Started out looking into more ADV "dirt bikes" (e.g. DR/DRZ), but now kinda leaning more to the lighter enduro/dual-sport cause as much as I might think I'll want to do the odd long trip I think the reality is 99% of my riding will be either on my bush block where I live or on the many dirt roads, state forest roads and fire trails on my doorstep. So, what' your thoughts on TE310 vs 449 vs 510/511?
Hey, thanks for checking in. There's a couple of ways you could go here depending on budget. A low km TE449 or 511 that is in tidy condition would be a good solid bike for trail riding, blasting around a block of land and the occasional shorter ride on the road. Some guys on our Facebook page have them done up as adv bikes, but they aren't best suited to that type of riding. The smaller, late model TE310R with red tappet cover is an impressive bike for its size. They handle well, produce good power and are not too heavy for younger riders looking at stepping up to a full sized bike. Both bikes are getting on a bit in age now, so a good previous owner is important as far as regular, frequent servicing. The 449-511 engine in particular likes plenty of oil changes, rather than change once and forget. The older TE450/510 model was a good solid bike as well, but now even older.... That said, another option for around the price of a new DRZ is the SWM 500R and 300R. These bikes are well supported in Australia by the Sherco importer and their dealer network and are simply the old TE 500 & 300 remade at the same original Husqvarna Factory in Italy under a new name. They have kyb suspension and a list of quality parts around the bike like Brembo brakes etc. Definitely worth a look also.
@@Danger_mouse awesome mate thanks for the info. Yeah read up on the swm bikes but few on the 2nd hand market atm and my budget is max 7k and 6 more comfortably.

Hey mate, great bunch of videos you've put up, I've had my 2012 449 since Feb this year and it's been an awesome bike, I had an 06 KTM 450 EXC before that. I live on the Gold Coast so I do the RTCB rides every now and again, ride at QMP sometimes and ride near the old motocross track here in Reedy Creek. Where about do you ride up on the Sunny Coast? Have you played about with suspension settings much yet? I'm looking into getting the correct spring rates for front and rear and getting them swapped during a suspension service. I have the rear dialled perfectly with static and rider sag, but being 6'2" at 94kg I can't help but think the front needs a different spring and even though the rear is set where it needs to be, it probably isn't the right ratio... cheers!
+PaulFreimanis Hey Paul. We ride over the back range from the coast. Used to ride Glasshouse a bit but it's pretty flogged out these days. I haven't done much with my suspension at all. It's a little on the soft side, but I like it that way for single tracks. If I were doing more high speed stuff, I'd go up a spring rate on the front. I'm 5'11" and around 90kg. You'll enjoy the KYB suspension after the WP stuff on the orange bike. WP never seems right out of the box to me.
I'm keen to keep dialling it in as I'm improving pretty quickly, but it's all down to ride time at the end of the day isn't it. I try to get out at least every other weekend. I'm getting better at pivot turns and slow speed control, technical stuff and hill climbs is what I like. I just shot Charlie Constanzo (A Suspension and Race Tech on the Gold Coast) an email and asked about servicing and while I'm at it I'll get the right spring rates put in.
