    biggest rainbow I've ever caught was on a fly I tied to look like the pellets they're fed at the hatchery😂

    I’ve been making pellet flies from foam for years, started out using coffee beans glued to hook shank.

    Yes, but chocolate brown. GSP is also useful as thread. You can pack the hair much tighter by compressing each new clump into the previous using your thumbs and index fingers after being spun onto the shank (better buoyancy). I usually use a #12 dry fly hook.
    Also, purchase a bag of fish feed and chum them in. You'll know exactly where to cast, lol.

      chumming is illegal in most us states for trout lol

    #flies been catching alot of stockies lately as they started late February. But taking a huge step for myself in my adventures in fly fishing by visiting Penns creek tomorrow for the first time with a friend. A local shop owner goes out almost everyday for a few hours and is already saying that the hatches are on. So while i wont be fishing for stocked tomorrow im sure ill be dipping my lines into waters with them in it very soon.

      You could, get some dyed deer hair or add a hot spot to the top or under side. Id do this with some UV resin or a patch of different colored deer hair.

    Pellet / Dog Food flies are easy with foam - I'd rather save the hair for other flies. Also, this fly looks like it would land softly. Whereas, planters / stockers typically react to the splash of the food. I've had some good luck actually landing the foam pellet flies hard on the surface of the water.

    • @MainelyFlies
      @MainelyFlies  8 месяцев назад

      This is a good one to practice with it’s not too bad. I’m no expert when it comes to spinning deer hair, but some things that can help is using the correct hair, amount you put on at one time, and how tight you packed them together. You can do this with a pen pushing it back on one end while pushing the opposite way with your fingers. Helps pack all the fibers a little bit closer giving it that thicker look.

    Be sure to use this fly when you’ve lost all dignity and self respect. 😂 when desperation really takes hold, be sure to throw a handful of pellets on the water before you cast! That really gets those planters riled up!!

    • @MainelyFlies
      @MainelyFlies  8 месяцев назад
