If you pay attention to Tomoya's eyes at the beginning of the episode, they're animated in a way that shows he's been crying a lot. Probably every night. From his guilt towards his father, Nagisa's absence, and the guilt he feels for making the Furukawas do all the work. It really is amazing what show don't tell can do. Kyoto animation is amazing
the fact that kyoto animation is one of the few studios in japan that really care for their employes and they have crazy good work condition makes all their anime just more enjoyable
For me sanae is the after story mvp, not only for taking care of ushio 5 years, but because she always had faith in tomoya, carrying the pain of not talking about Nagisa every time ushio asked her to leave that task to her father, tell ushio that he could only cry in his father's arms because he knew that day would come, and finally plan the trip in such an important place for tomoya and that he managed not only to heal the wounds with his father but also to reconnect with his daughter , Everything that sanae does for ushio and tomoya is little valued in the forums, the easiest thing would have been to tell ushio that her father had abandoned her and to raise her herself but no, to recognize the pain of tomoya, to know the kind of person that He really is, and knowing that the best thing for both of them was to heal those wounds and that in the end they would be together, is from a true mvp.
This show is like the Dango song says "It takes all the happy and sad things and rounds them up". This show is infamous for being sad but I consider it a happy show. The sad stuff and how they overcome it just makes the happy stuff (and there's SO much of it) sweeter and I can't get enough of it!
that part when Sanae cried... watch what Tomoya is doing.
He is bowing down in respect n humility towards his in-laws. Coz as much as he lost his wife, Akio and Sanae lost their daughter. Like Sanae said, taking care of Ushio was a blessing, coz it stopped her from losing control at the lost of her daughter.
Ah... I didn't expect to cry so much in this episode... Children / parents situation always get me. As a certain someone once said, you can always meet your dears ones half way. I'm glad Tomoya was able to reconect with his father. You see things a lot different as you grow.
I feel like we miss something with families divided like that. Old people alone or in facilities...makes me sad.
Dogti: "I didn't expect to cry so much in this episode" ... Just wait
@@jstrahan2 Yeah, I know what's coming, I already saw it ^^ But I didn't expect this episode to hurt so much :3
Just a reminder: Please watch the OVAs once you complete After Story. Then watch Clannad and Deus Ex Machina.
They will watch the two OVA's once its completed. They have already seen season 1 AKA Clannad.
@@hmhm856 Cool
自分の父親の事との思い出重ねるとマジで涙止まんなくなる
I have the same experience. Thank you
Damn they're almost done with Clannad After Story. Can't wait to see their reaction of the last episode
Each Key visual novel has a theme, Clannad's theme is family, and each good route is more about family than Okazaki's relationship
I always had a fight with my dad too in past . but now I already grown up , I feel like all my dad do is how he show his love to me , because he want me to become a great man and leader in my family one day . Hopefully I can repay him one day .
I think it happened for the audience because no one remembers the 'spectral' Fuko, not even Tomoya. The whole point of that arc was that she slowly fades from memory.
It did actually happen as Kouko and Yoshino's wedding is proof of that
@@nizuma_8341 What actually happened? The Fuko arc? Yes, that's what I said. I was saying that no one remembers what happened, so this little reunion with Fuko wasn't talked about more since no one remembers the events from her arc in season 1, so it's more for the audience.
@@handzar6402 there's that too. A more fitting explanation would be from the visual novel about the orbs and stuff. We saw during his father's departure, Ushio saw an orb of light reaching Tomoya's heart which can be presumed to be that it was his wish for Fuuko to be awakened again. There's also speculation that the second doll in the illusionary world was Fuuko but she didn't make it as in the real world her soul is a banshi (if that was the term)
I'm a 22 year old College student.
Why am I crying.... Damn you Clannad. This is the 2nd time you made me cry in this episode after 6 years
That scenario you guys made up with Ushio bringing one of the starfish carvings would have been so cool!
You two are so cute I swear
The first 2 mins had me smiling all the time
Maybe I remember this anime until I die
I sure will. This was also my first anime.
The part before watching the episode was as interesting as the reaction :) About Fuko, the whorld people have to keep in mind is "Dream" , in the Fuko arc, it refered as a sharing dream, the surnatural aspect is that she able to share it with other and that she can do it went they are awake, but the reste of the dinamic aply, went you wake up, dream fade away... but some time they can influence you with out knowing, like in the movie inception... Fuko is the one that make Tomoya start to call Nagisa by her first name and change them bots.... after Fuko arc, Tomoya and Nagisa was much more closer that they was before, but it not true that Fuko part in the first season did not have payoff for the caracter.... and you two probably already see the next episode, but in this one you have a clear hint for who is the tearcher... it about 1 second betwent the time Tomoya knock at the door and Ushio go answer :)
This is it folks, the very last orb that Tomoya has to collect to set the endgame into motion. Also, the thing about Tomoya washing the back of his father, it is not that his father cannot wash himself, but rather it is a Japanese thing. A kind of bonding between parent and child to wash each other's back. Usually only when their relationship is really good will they do it on their own accord and volunteer to wash for the other party.
I think that's the second to last orb. I think Tomoya collects the last one at the end of EP 21, when he say "I love you, too" (even if it's not shown)
No the last orb is the one when he fufills ushio wish to go to trip
@@Pramod_Amr Well, I was close. It's just...
FINALE SPOILER BELOW
it looks to me like Ushio waited to die until Tomoya said to her "I love you, too" under the snow. Like being loved by her father was her ultimate wish.
Just to remind, AFTER watching Clannad AS watch on YT:
Clannad and Deus Ex machina
This is one of the most heart-filling episodes of AS...
EP 19 SPOILERS BELOW
The song in first minutes is sing so softly, it looks like Nagisa herself is singing it!
2:11 Sanae, our hero!
2:19 LOOK AT THIS GUY! You can see this trip literally transformed him!
2:44 Thank you, Key, you couldn't not make me remember about the THING, do you? T_T
2:51 - 4:08 I... this is so... so much love in just 1 minute!
4:09 USHIO, STOP BEING SO CUTE!
5:28 The talk they waited to do for 5 long years...
6:03 So much sorrow... so much pain... FIVE YEARS... I so want to hug Sanae and cry with her!
7:55 Truth, Tomoya...
9:12 Look at Ushio's drawing... :D
10:05 DON'T REMEMBER ME THAT!
10:36 Our favourite starfish maniac is BACK!
Fuko's reaction to Ushio is... hard to explain. Let's say her connection with Ushio and Nagisa is very strong.
14:22 "Have I accomplished it?" So much depth in this simple question! He always wanted to be a good father, he thought he was a failure, but now that son he loves so much is telling him he did a good job! I can feel his happiness and relief!
15:46 Tomoya's memories... the good memories he kept buried until now... they're coming out!
16:22 He still worries for him... and that head-pat, he still treats Tomoya as his love-needing son. That's the infinite love every family should have!
17:28 *Energy reserve at 99%* and Ushio SAW IT!
Finally, Tomoya has fixed every mistake in his recent life. Things can just go better now... right...?
My favourite character Fuuko makes a comeback. I didn't realise how much I had missed her.
Ur favourite character isn't kyou?
@@stuntinonthesehos second favourite character. Miyazawa closely behind
I remember when I watched this episode, I was just really happy to see Fuko back
Sanae is such a great person, at first glance and when even more if you think about it.
Yes taking care of Ushio helped her as well, but she still took care of her for 5 years, made sure she never forgot who her real father is and that he loves her, he just needs time to realize his place in life after Nagisa died. Then she goes and makes sure all the important people around him know that as well AND sets up the perfect trip for Tomoya to finally realise he still has a daughter to take care of and start the process of comint to terms with the death of Nagisa. Immediately handing over the child back to him afterwards. All that while surpressing her own pain.
I wouldn't be able to be that strong.
Next anime to watch: Steins;Gate ... tied for second best rated anime with After Story on Anime News Network (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is #1)
Clannad is a great anime for male adults that wanna be father in the future
やっぱり「父親との和解」が一番素晴らしいと思う
I like Carson's reaction very much, he is mature and is able to connect with Tomoya very well
It's sad that so many people gives up this show because of the common spoiler. This show becomes special after that.
He wasn't a best dad, but he was a good father.
Yeah it's not sad anymore

ともやの父さんが君付けをしないで呼ぶとこがマジですき
これ、英語圏の人も理解できるのかな?
Yes I can understand what your saying
You should react to the OVAs too when you finish. Good to see people still watching Clannad, and oh boy really want to know depression? Play the visual novel. Tomoyo’s route is my fav.
Gintama?
Never understood what was the point of Fuuko in the anime if all of the memories from early in the first season where just gonna be wiped from everyones memory.
To introduce her sister and then her husband, the latter which plays a somewhat prominent role in AS?
"What's the point of Nagisa if she was just going to die?"
"What's the point of Misae's backstory if no one in the current timeline cares or brings it up ever again"
@@powerfulberry237 Misae's story was just there to collect the orb, but it was pointless in the end.
Nagisa would have been pointless if everyone had amnesia when she died
@@hmhm856 You are not paying attention to detail.
She's probably the most important non main character in the show. Different interpretations may also consider her to be one of the mains. The reason why is
- She introduces the supernatural phenomena in the show
- Her arc is the first arc to show off the lights
- She is speculated to be the second doll in the illusionary world (further confirmed by ep 22)
- One of the reasons why the main couple became so close
There's more but this shd prove that's she's more than your average supporting character
@@nizuma_8341 That sums it up 👍
