Okay, here's one for you - gem gender identification, or gemder for short.
Aside from Steven, (who is half-human half-gem) Stevonnie (3/4 human 1/4 gem) and Smoky Quartz, (1/4 human 3/4 gem) all other gems are destinctly female in both design and identity when first formed, using pronouns like she and her - is there anything besides mere fan speculation that would stop a "male" gem from occuring at "birth," so to speak? It's confirmed that "All gems are female by default, but can take on a masculine form when regenerating if they wish," but I'd like to go one step beyond on that one.
Personally, I have one idea for my own where, due to the stone being "miscut" or "malformed," one of my gems ends up identifying as male upon first forming and he is branded as "defective" by others of his stone variety, who are all female and any merging with another female gem would result in an androgynous fusion like what happens with Stevonnie and Smoky, and would use neutral terms like they and them.
That's just what I was thinking about it, but I'd like to hear what you think about that - things like Amethyst being short because she "woke up 500 years too late" exist in canon, so why not have other ideas about gem "malformities" during their stone-growing process like that? It should make things interesting as a form of head-canon.
(I do know the whole "Gems don't actually have a gender" thing is true since stones are not living creatures, but biological gender and gender identity are not mutually exclusive - just in case anyone jumps on me for this.)
A very useful video nonetheless, it will certainly be of help to anyone wanting to make a fan character for the show to give this a look first for helpful tips.
Ian Jones Quarty has said that gems can reform with male appearances.
I meant from when they first form their physical bodies, not from reforming after taking damage - I know the Gems are all female by default and can shapeshift at will like Amethyst does into Purple Puma, but we've yet to see, beyond Steven, a Gem that is "born" male and this is all just me putting up my own idea behind how that might be possible.

Ponder von Lampgurgle i think it‘s a great idea! Making the male thing a part of something unusual makes your oc look more canon but also more interesting as well! I see many gems in canon who refer to themselfes as female in the show that appear manly. For example jasper or topaz. What i find interesting is that they all appear to have female voices so maybe if ur going for this defective thing give him a male voice. A voice they‘d deem unnatural. Anyways, sometimes i even see pearl as a guy and i like that idea a lot! I think the message of the show is that masculinity and femininity can have a wide spectrum and making wvery character genderless is kind of making this thing more interesting. But adding gender to it can also be a great thing. Especially with ocs as long as it fits the show mostly. Great idea!
I literally had this same idea! So, my idea is, he was formed and came out with a masculine form rather than the normal one. I decided he'd be a sapphire since they usually have extremely feminine forms, so it would be seen as more outrageous. But, at this point (around the end of era one and beginning of era two), resources are starting to dwindle on homeworld, so instead of being shattered, I'd think he'd be poofed then forced into a more "appropriate" feminine form. He's a sapphire, so he'd still be a very valuable gem, but being seen as off-color, he'd be treated like a pearl. He'd eventually escape and live with some off-colors in his true form, but still feel weird about certain things, like pronouns, since she/her are the only pronouns homeworld uses, and his name, sapphire. I figure after change your mind, the diamonds would start changing homeworld conduct with the help of steven and the others, and off-color gems start to come out of hidding. The other gems still have no idea how to treat the sapphire, and he eventually meets up with Steven, at which point he finds out what a guy is, and starts identifying as such, using he/him pronouns and going by Kashmir, cause Kashmir Sapphires. The other gems still have no idea how to treat him, so he goes to earth, where he gets to live freely as a guy. I feel like this would be a really interesting character to see, no?
About the gem properties, I found some pretty interesting things when researching. Apparently, Magnetite is magnetic (obviously) by default. Also, when exposed to pressure or heat, Tourmalines can become electrically charged. If someone wants to do a Magnetite or Tourmaline OC, here are some things to go off of.
I've actually made about 10 or so Gemsonas, one of which being the aforementioned electrokinetic Tourmaline.
That sounds awesome! I think I can write like a backstory/fan fic about that.l like, once there was a male gem. Not human, nor half gem. Try were magnetic and their power was magnetic.
Wow I was making a fusion between a Bismuth and a Tourmaline, Magnetite sounds like a pretty good name…

My OC is a half Gem from Canada, named Jack Miller. His mother was Onyx, who was a Crystal Gem. So when the Diamond Attack happened and the beam reflects off Rose's shield, it was greatly weakened and that is why it only corrupted them. Onyx was not corrupted because she had a shield of her own, which was forged for her by Bismuth. The beam bounced off Rose's shield then blasted through Onyx's, but it was weakened enough to only poof her and her miscolored(orange) Peridot friend. The blast sent them flying across the country to Canada. When they reformed they stayed hidden in the cold wilderness and built a hideaway. They looked around for other survivors often, but soon realized they were far from any other gems. fast-forward a few thousand years, and the forest they hid in has slowly surrounded with neighborhoods. One day a shabby black sedan serves off the road and into the woods. The car finally halts when it collides with a particularly large tree. I mean, big. The driver is knocked unconscious. He woke up to find two strange women were taking care of him. He introduced himself "Um, hi. My name is Sean. Sean Miller." The place they were staying in was a bunch of hollowed out trees with bridges connecting them. Onyx didn't acknowledge Him that much at all. Peridot would bring him "food" (mostly berries, leaves, and live squirrels). When he returned to health they kicked him out but he would return often, because he was infatuated by Onyx. Over time, Onyx fell in love with Sean. Fast forward about 5 years and Jack Miller is born while Onyx fades away. Peridot trains Jack in a way similar to the way the other gems trained Steven, but much harsher. Jack learns to summon his weapon(a black khopesh sword) by 8 and starts combat training at 10. When Jack is 13 townspeople find out that the weird woman who lives in the woods is an alien. The town attacked at night and shattered Peridot in front of Jack, and Sean died as the treehouses were destroyed. They said to him, "HEY KID! You're free!" Jack just ran. After a year of running, he finds himself in America. During his travels he encounters a few corrupted gems. "No one showed Peri mercy. No one showed MY DAD mercy. So why should I." He shatters all three he encountered and kept the shards in his bag. After a while he found his way to Beach City. Its night. He sees a fry shop. He breaks in and steals a bunch of fries, but Peedee walks in to check on the noise he heard. Jack grabs him and holds his sword to his throat. Peedee screams for help and shortly after Garnet punches a hole in the wall, and says "I knew something bad would happen here." a fight between Jack and the gems starts. Jack poofs amethyst, knocks down Pearl, and then gets knocked unconscious by garnet.

So, I sorta accidentally made a gemsona, I had a really cool off-color idea and then sorta fleshed it out from there. The basic premise was, what if a gem was formed, but took a male form instead of the normal female one? So I gave him an entire backstory and then decided it would be seen as most outrageous if he was a gem that's usually very feminine in presentation, so I made him a sapphire. I figure he'd go by Kashmir, since, you know, Kashmir Sapphires and stuff. And that's the story of how I accidentally made a gemsona. Whoops.

Spaz Master sounds good! Male gems wouldn‘t be canon for the actual show but if u really want male oc‘s then that‘s fine. I even have a male identifying gem myself. I think the canon is trying to make the gems based on their personality rather than their gender cause to revecca all gems are actually genderless but adress themselfes with female pronouns. I can see that in jasper, the zircons and ruby. While all of them are considered female they all have a lot of masculine traits that you would consider manly. I can even see pearl as a guy. She dresses in suits mostly, she‘s a fighter and she‘s androgynous (wide shoulders and slim hips) so while she has a lot of feminine traits she could also identify as a man. But that‘s just theoretical think. Over all it‘s up to you if your gem has actual gender, if it identifies as a male while using female pronouns or while he uses male pronouns it‘s all up to you. The canon isn‘t a strict rule you must follow, the canon is simply a restriction of freedom u can use that can help you make your oc fit in the universe more.

I've made my own gem oc! (Boy, this is gonna be a long comment)
Name: Marialite
Weapon: Quarterstaff/Bo
Alignment: Originally Homeworld but is now a Crystal Gem
Power: Wind manipulation
Personality: Positive and confident as well as bold, tends to rush into situations without planning. Can be seen as a bit childish at times as she tries to maintain an optimistic image to keep up the hopes of others. She is very passionate about the things she cares about.
Looks:
Hair- Think of the swirly things on Nejire Hado's hair (from My Hero Academia) when she's in her hero costume but they are Marialites main hair and are upside down, bigger, and worn in a place similar to pigtails. They fade from white to a soft yellow
Skin- Her skin is a soft, daffodil yellow
Eyes- Lemon yellow
Clothes - a medallion and pineapple yellow sleeveless shirt (or whatever gems wear) connected to medallion yellow shorts along with (dijon yellow) long sleeve gloves that start below the elbow and end as fingerless gloves. A Marialite yellow translucent skirt that starts short at the front and reaches her knees at the back.
Body- Slim with a slight curve at the hips
Height- A little taller than Steven (before the future series) but shorter than Garnet and Pearl, so she kinda looks like a kid.

Backstory:
Marialite was an acrobat and usually performed for other gems of higher rankings. Because of her reflexive skills, she was also a bodyguard on a few occasions chosen to protect important gems that may have been targeted by the Crystal Gems. One day, after a battle with the Crystal Gems, Marialite was sent on a mission to spy on the crystal gems and see what they were up to. She figured that she'd have to be stealthy, so reluctantly, she transformed into a small quail, keeping her gem hidden. She followed the Crystal Gems, and saw them fight battles and care for each other. She also saw the Earth itself and how unique it was.
Slowly but surely, Marialite began to understand the Crystal Gems' cause, their reason. She saw their individuality and she suddenly had a longing that she too, could be able to make her own choices. When she came back, Marialite lied and said that they were being expertly hidden, and said they would be planning their next attack in 7 days, when in actuality it was 4. The Crystal Gems came when the Homeworld gems were getting ready for their attack which was presumed to be later, though they quickly recovered.
This time, Marialite was chosen to guard a Sapphire, and though she did her job well, she seemed to be holding back and even helping the Crystal Gems on a few occasions. Later, she was confronted by a higher ranking gem (I can't really choose and I don't know much about gem rankings, lol) and was accused of treachery for deceit and helping the enemy. Marialite attacked the higher ranking gem and quickly ran away. Many quartz gems as well as rubies were sent after her. She was injured as she was running away, earning a cracked gem. Marialite found a ship, and stole it, setting course for Earth. It was a difficult journey, she could barely hold it together because of her cracked gem.
She crash landed on Earth and was found by Rose Quartz and Pearl. She held up her quarterstaff in alarm, afraid of being attacked. Rose was able to figure out she was hurt, and calmed her down. She was healed by Rose, and was then questioned because of her Homeworld uniform. Marialite had said that she wished to join the Crystal Gems, that she realized the tyranny of Homeworld. How everyone was the same and how unique and different the Crystal Gems were. A few of the Crystal Gems were skeptical at first, others believed her.
But, Marialite was able to show her loyalty when she fought with the Crystal Gems at their next battle with Homeworld. She was now a fully fledged member of the Crystal Gems.

I'd say she's kinda like Bubbles from the Power Puff Girls, but a tinge more serious.
So my Gemsonas are Jet, Jade, and their fusion Chrysocolla. Jet was a member of Blue Diamonds Court, all Jets are designed to serve as spies and scouts on other planets sporting dark colors, stealth powers, and reconnaissance powers. My Jet is a defective gem in so being that they are mute, incapable of speaking, instead they make high pitch sounds like singing glass. Jade's purpose is chronicling information and serving as long range telepathy and memory storage, sharing information with all other Jades simultaneously through their telepathic links. My Jade was assigned to link with Jet in order to record all information about their missions for Homeworld's records when she discovered Jet's defections. Jade and Jet grew close as only Jade could hear Jet's inner thoughts and they both escaped on a ship to earth to join the crystal gems whom they heard were supporters of different gems. Jet and Jade were fighting the battle against homeworld when Jet suddenly turned on Jade and poofed her, bubbling her in the process. They then stole away to a remote cave where they guarded her until the corruption song came and disfigured Jet into a corrupted gem where they still stand resolute in protecting Jade through instinct alone. Their fusion, Chrysocolla, is a black and green gem fusion with patterning similar to that of a cow. They both fused into Chrysocolla from time to time but their "experience" was more platonic if anything and they preferred to be separate more often than naught. Chrysocolla is an obsessive fusion, they are invasive to the minds of others and uncaring who this upsets. They will hold themselves higher in importance to any and all other gems and will make their own protection and safety a top priority. It is believed that Jet's feelings toward Jade is what causes Chrysocolla to be so obsessive in their self worth and personal safety, while the invasive nature of Jade explains the other bit.
Not sure, it's a work in progress.
My gem is Cobalt, it is a gem with chemical properties, so I can heat up or shoot a chemical wave, it can also manipulate metal as some Cobalts have some Titanium in it. My gem is aggressive. It is a rebel, but also not a Crystal Gem, it has no one ruling him. I have a whip because I am a quartz. I have the same build as Jasper pretty much. I am heat resistant like Bismuth because to melt a Cobalt gem you need 2.5K F°. My gems shape is a diamond with a circle in the middle, I have ,one hair and horns. And lastly I’m very resiliant, charge into battle fearlessly, and love to fight. (Edit): I mentioned in my comment that I am not a Crystal Gem, but I am a rebel to Joe world. Since I don’t have a diamond or a star, I make a circle in my clothing. I also don’t have the skin color of my gem, I have a humans skin color. But I have Navy Blue hair. And some gray tips and/or fade. As there is a dark blue Cobalt. And there is a grayish Cobalt.

Brief description of backstory: Ruby was a fairly young homeworld gem that was one of four Rubies assigned to one of Yellow's Sapphires. Near the end of the gem war her Sapphire set the Rubies free so they could all live better futures. Clueless and alone, Ruby set out on her own to explore the star system. Shortly after she set out she found a distress signal from a crashed ship on a small moon and met a Carnelian that failed her mission and escaped the authority. The two quickly became friends. Upon the announcement of a new era, they decided to visit Little Homeworld and see what all the fuss is about Earth.
mine is a they/them/theirs and a fusion of a pearl and a Elizabeth gem i called their weapon a star sword cause it has a star in the middle and they're goofy,protective,kind,caring and funny
I made a gem oc and she is angelite! ( a healing gem ) she has a bow and arrow and if it hits an enemy it damages them but if it hits a ally it heals them she is posh but sassy (basically like celestia ludenburg from danganronpa 😂)

Also, for the body. whenever you're making an oc you should know shape language. So like, what's the personality of your gem, then design it based on shape language. It's not necessary but i so that all the time and it just makes more sense to me..? Idk
well I did not have that kinda idea for my gem I kinda based it off of a cropprut gem and form the movie alien .
I just realized that my character has a red and ruby-shaped gem on the eye so that means my character is the daughter of eyeball ruby

Could you review my gem OC Pyrite?
She's been made on earth and is currently in hiding from homeworld. She has clusters of short, spiked, gold hair and has freckles. Her eyes are a desaturated gold and her outfit resembles a miner from the Victorian era - a blouse and shorts. Her purpose is to distribute tools and weapons to higher ranking gems. She has a slim, willowy build and a mischievous smirk. Because Pyrite was sold to others as a fraud, instead of selling 'gold', she is very mischievous and fearless, like a pirate! Her gem has an circular cut with an octagonal facet. She is hiding on earth because of a few tricks she played on gems, by switching the orders around and adding silly garnishes onto the completed weapons or objects. Word spread of her tricks and Yellow Diamond sent guards to capture her, but she escaped by using her gem weapon (a pickaxe that scatters dust when shaken, and has a sharp, clean-cut blade) to send them off her trail. She took an escape pod and it crash landed on earth, and now she is in hiding.

I know this video is kinda old but I wanna share my oc/universe idea.So when I was watching the show I wondered if somewhere else in the galaxy or earth there was another hybrid of a gem and something, so I made a human-gem oc. So I can make a story in the already set universe I might make it that they are looked after a gem that was thought to be shattered or popped out late like amethyst, but it also means the gem taking care of them would not have a star or even would have kept the diamond look. This is getting long but that's my concept ☺
this is a good video but i'm gonna stick to my own oc and just make a steven universe character of it and i'm gonna give it a gemstone that probably doesn't exist and i just made up or it does and i didn't even know it

I like the oc but it’s body shape would be similar to the fusion in the show as we learn through the video games (and through a bit of Head canon) that Garnet probably named themselves garnet becuase they looked like garnet gems so I’d just assume all Fusoins name themselves after the gem they look like (most likely sized down, and Except Smokey quarts, and most likely Obsidian) so Sugilite gems most likely look like the fusion

Yeah lol, I see lots of people in su roleplays giving there gems names and whenever someone gets it wrong and calls them by their gem-type (usually me) they get mad. But it’s like how was a I supposed to remember lol, I don’t care that you have a Rose Quartz named Sasha.
