Not only is his level of intellect off the charts, but his uncanny ability to communicate ordinarily complex information in unlimited, amazingly interesting and fascinating ways is extraordinary. Awesome...thanks for organizing the event and posting the video....
He completely summed it all up in that last speech. There is nothing that makes me feel more sad than knowing that I will not be around to see the discovery of the origin of life, or to see the discovery of what dark matter and dark energy are, or to ever go into space myself and witness the absolute wonder that is our universe. It's so sad to think that I will never be around to witness any of that. I cannot think of anything more wonderous and beautiful and incredible than the universe in which we live, and knowing that I will never get to see any of the incredible things that happen within it (other than that which happens on Earth), makes me deeply sad.
well dont be sad because it will be a very long time b4 we can figure out the universe. we barely scratch the surface, we have very little facts and mostly theories about the universe. but future generations will thank us because we are paving the way for them
My advice to you is to enjoy the discoveries that are happening now! There is much wonder in the world today if you bother to look. Think of this- what would people who lived two hundred years ago think of what is transpiring today? They could hardly fathom what we today take for granted. Love where your at and do not worry about what will be.I wish you all that life has to give.Enjoy!

In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!"
I want to be honest. I am very glad that NDT went into the field of science. If he had been in any other field, be it religion, or politics, or entertainment. His passion for science and rational thinking makes people WANT to climb out of the box, see things on a larger scale, to marvel and wonder, and make advances in science for the betterment of mankind. Had he have been a preacher, senator, or an actor I would have viewed him with disdain. Above average tiny human in a huge amazing universe.

Man. See, This is why we love you, Neil deGreasse Tyson. I don't think, maybe other than Bill Nye, there is a scientist who is as equally knowledgeable and smart as they are charismatic and funny (you got that geek comedy down to a science, if you will forgive the pun). Your passion and love for science is evident to all who listen to you speak, and there is just something appealing about someone who is as passionate and devoted to something as you are to science. That Titanic story was just awesome!!!
Can someone please locate the 2nd grade student that asked the question about colliding black holes around the 45:35 mark and make sure he’s achieving his dreams to their full potential? Thank y’ALL,.. ~DPW
It is an interpretation from the from an observer moving at high speed. Similar to an observer seeing an object move at high speed (contraction of a moving object) The case of an object moving at high speed appearing contracted to an observer can be explained as the train moving away from you at a diagonal angle in the dimension of time. The same goes for objects viewed from the moving train. Their temporal alignment is diagonal so they appear shorter in the direction you are moving in.
I think the thing that really blew my mind was how we can't account for 85% of the universe's gravity. Dr. Tyson's explanation was very awesome I like his version much more than just 'dark matter mystery x particle'. I'm not a religious person by any stretch but ideas like this seem almost spiritual to me in nature. To me it opens up possibilities that religion could never conceive and it does so without the mention of slaughter or sacrifice while providing more evidence than the bible ever has.
For the first time ever, I disagree with Neil. The last part when he talks about communicating with a smarter species I think he is forgetting a few things and is right out wrong about one. He says that we do not communicate with chimps but we do try as best we can. Another thing is that we actually have a language that such a smart species would translate in a second. Yes, we would probably not be sitting in a caf having a conversation but the species with the higher intelligence would most likely want to know everything about us and one way to do that is to ask. If other species could talk we would most likely save loads of time on research by just asking so there is no reason to think a species with higher intelligence would not do the same.
I could listen to him forever.

Oh that kid. "Could a black hole suck in another black hole?" Little did he know, that bloop showed us that gravitational waves exist. :')

This was such a great Q&A
48:00 *Dude, I really love Neil's ability to infuse a spark into people's imaginations (specially on kids) and curiosity, he's truly a unique astrophysicist precisely because this wonderful ability that, in my personal opinion, was infused into him by Carl Sagan, another Giant in the popular science community*
By the way: two 🐈⬛ holes colliding provided the ultimate proof 🧾 that gravitational waves (traveling at the the speed of light) actually exist just giving Einstein theory an other point 😁👏👏👌
I wonder what happened to that kid Clayton who asked the question regarding colliding black holes. As of 2018 he should now be in year 12 where Neil said he should be back when this video was uploaded.
Ok video. But....who counted the stars in space and the sand on earth to say it's more stars? What instrument did he use to count all the words uttered on earth?
Much like human population. The figure is statistical I believe.
You don’t need to actually count large numbers to make a reasonable estimate.
Dammit, it's two in the morning again. Why so entrancing NGT?

He is brave sitting so close to Neil.. I've seen his hands and what they're capable of when he gets on a roll... It's lethal
Omg shut up
i wish he would write a book titled "...And It Was The Wrong Sky"
Neil deGrasse Tyson has the ability to make everything he talks about interesting. I freaking love this guy. such an amazing guy.
I have one life and not enough time to listen to information delivered so slowly.
Such a fascinating man.

He is right. We need more gray matter. May be then we will stop wars and give up religion.
The smartest people on earth only use about 10% of the gray matter they have. We don't need more... we need to figure out how to use what we have.
I would love to have heard the answer to black holes colliding with the discovery of gravitational waves...

Then you're one of the blind American idiots
+victor gibson why is that?
If you don't know you can't be told you will remain groveling after mass media hyped idiots like Neal pork chop chasing clown. Do twenty years of research then get back to me.
Neal is a pork chop chasing clown he doesn't give anyone intelligent any damn hope he is a buffoon
Anyone who thinks this boy is intelligent is probably also thinking George Bush jr. Was intelligent it's very easy to fool clown sitting in the audience waiting to clap on cue but you can't fool truly intelligent people Neil is a little Uncle Tom ready to say whatever he knows will be accepted mostly he should be in a used car lot selling junk Vehicles because he could do really good at lying and pretending
WE NEED A REMASTER VERSION OF THIS VIDEO
A PARROT CAN DO THAT! haha best line
I scrolled down and read your comment just as he was delivering the line. I got spooked and had to let you know.

Fred is as good or better than any other label. It gives the name 'dark matter' a personality. Doesn't it Fred? 😝

so cute about the elementary kids sending notes... :)
this is a classic example of the anthropic principal. Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, "This is an interesting world I find myself in - an interesting hole I find myself in - fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!"
I want to be honest. I am very glad that NDT went into the field of science. If he had been in any other field, be it religion, or politics, or entertainment. His passion for science and rational thinking makes people WANT to climb out of the box, see things on a larger scale, to marvel and wonder, and make advances in science for the betterment of mankind. Had he have been a preacher, senator, or an actor I would have viewed him with disdain. Above average tiny human in a huge amazing universe.
VOTE Neil deGrasse Tyson FOR PRESIDENT! ITS ABOUT TIME WE HAVE A SMART ONE.
His interaction with that kid is the best.

Last speech!!! Soooo true and awesome at the same time.
Before i even finish watching the video, im at the part where he just said "i was in college when the disney movie "black hole" came out" and i can already feel what he's going to say because i felt just as appalled by the physical impossibilities in the movie
Interesting music, though.

1:26:30 *The idea of "God" keeps Neil up at night.*
I don't think so chief... 😂
That Titanic story was just awesome!!!
so you managed to edit your comment but still screwed up his name
Can someone please locate the 2nd grade student that asked the question about colliding black holes around the 45:35 mark and make sure he’s achieving his dreams to their full potential? Thank y’ALL,.. ~DPW
"Claiming to know" is antithetical to the entire BASIS of science.
I wish Neil was my daughter
I'm going to refer to "Dark Matter" as "Fred" from now on.
27:50 go mythbusters! :p MYTH CONFIRMED!
It is an interpretation from the from an observer moving at high speed. Similar to an observer seeing an object move at high speed (contraction of a moving object)
The case of an object moving at high speed appearing contracted to an observer can be explained as the train moving away from you at a diagonal angle in the dimension of time.
59:32 caught me off guard, can't stop laughing now every time I see an optical illusions book
And yet we pet the chimps and eat others animals... they will probably do the same to us.
