  • If you backup your Mac using Time Machine, you can recover lost or delete files on your Mac. You can simply plug in your time machine back up hard drive and enter the time machine.
You can either choose to enter the time machine from a folder within your computer or from the desktop.
Choose a date in time from one of your previous backups. You can now try and find the file that you lost. Select the file and press restore. Time Machine will copy and paste that file to the original folder in your current folder.
And it's that easy to restore files from a Time Machine back up.
To set up the time machine backup for the first time, watch this video:

Hey thanks for the video; just what I needed. Never done a Time Machine backup before this year when I got my new M1 MacBook Pro. Today, Dropbox setup messed around with Documents folder and that was frustrating. I’m really glad that I can restore that folder, and the video makes it pretty easy. Appreciate the help!

Yes, also this happens to me when I click on enter Time Machine. It opens, but it does not allow me to click on files from previous dates to look in them to find a file that I would like to retrieve (find), just today's file. There are no dates given to click on to open backed-up files from previous years, just a small horizontal line that doesn't do anything when I click on it. What should I do?

I recently upgraded my internal hard drive on my 2019 iMac bc the drive was faulty and couldn’t be repaired. Before doing so i backed everything to an external hard dive via time capsule. Now when rebooting the computer with Apple R and choosing to restore from time machine, it doesn’t show me a list of back ups. I tried running a disk repair but it didn’t seem to work. Can I start up the new computer and then retrieve everything another way (my files)? Thank you

How do you restore "Reminders" from time machine? All mine were erased from my Mac when I used iCloud, even though I told iCloud to make a copy to my Mac. I can see them on iCloud and tried restoring them from iCloud to my Mac, but without and success. So I figured I could get it from Time Machine, but I don't know where the Reminders data reside. Have any ideas?

Thank you for this great information and delivered in your natural way. I so appreciate you getting straight to the point. Very helpful.
I have one question. I'm trying to restore the photos in my 2021 folder because I accidentally deleted/removed 9 of them from there yesterday. When I go into that folder, then into Time Machine, hit restore, it asks me, "The location to which you’re restoring “2021” already contains an item with the same name. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re restoring?" I'm not sure what to do here. I don't know that I want to duplicate that entire folder but I do want to get back the nine images. Any suggestions?

Great video. You do awesome work. I deleted a number of videos from iPhoto after backing them up on a hard drive that I use exclusively for RUclips videos. That hard drive failed and a local tech company could not open it. Now when I go into my time machine to check another hard drive that I use specifically for backups, my iPhoto folder doesn't show up anywhere so I cant retrieve my missing videos. It appears time machine is not backing up my iPhoto file. I don't have it checked off as an exclusion in the options box. Any ideas what is going on?

Where and how can we ask direct questions to the poster of the video? I see good questions here that are not answered. When I click on Enger Time Machine, the window opens but for most of
the previously backed-up files from last and previous years, there is no date, just a small horizontal line, to click on and that does not open anything when clicked on. Only the file indicated as Today's file has a date next to it. And when I click on that date, there are no files that open up that I can click on to find the file that I am looking for. What should I do?

I'm on El Capitan right now and want to switch to Yosemite. I did do a backup of my materials and am currently even in the process of copying one of the partitions I did have on my main drive to an external one for the time being.... I know we're all rushed for time so allow me to come to my point..... My main objective is to copy EVERYTHING such as files and other data.... but, leaving the OS El Capitan behind so that everything can function happily within Yosemite..... How can that be done?

My Mac HD died. No problem I thought, I've got a back up. I plug in my Lacie, and I see all the old back ups going back to 2016, but when I clicked on them and tried to restore, nothing! I backed up my new hard drive to the same machine and no problem there or restoring files (hope I have done anything wrong there) so it's still working. The old back up dates are visible (I only backed up every 6 months so there aren't many). Is there anything I can do? I notice when I look at space, there's about 2.63 tb capacity in a 3tb lacie. As my replacement hard drive has only used about 100GB, does that suggest there are old back ups there I can't see, or is that illusory? There's irreplaceable stuff on there so I'll be heartbroken if they've gone. Is this a common time machine problem (failure to restore when an internal HD dies)? Thanks.

Need your help. New to macOS.I have a iMac w/1tb SSD running on Big Sur 11.1. I have a T7 1tb I was using as a Time Machine drive with a APFS format. After viewing some of your Time Machine videos I realized I've undersized by BU drive. I now have a 4tb 7200 RPM ext drive and have formatted it for TM as well in APFS and have told TM that it is by BU drive. Question is How can I move or copy the previous backups from the T7 to the new drive. It will not let me copy or drag n drop the files over tot he new drive. Seems like the new APFS format does not like to do that. Any help would be appreciated . Thanks, for all of your helpful videos.

I wish I had a good answer for you. I’ve never done that before. When I switched drives for time machine, I usually started a fresh back up and kept the old drive in the closet. I’ve never tried to migrate backups from two separate drives into one drive
