I searched high and low on RUclips to figure out how to transmit a back up of my MacBook Pro from a Passport External Hard Drive. Your video gave me the answers I needed. Using Migration Assistant, I was able to get the job done! So happy to have years worth of data and files back! Thank You!
This was very helpful and very well explained. Thank you! Showing your screen made it easy for me to learn. I also appreciated your explanation of why Migration Assistant wasn't actually the tool to use.
Great job helping others. You would think Apple would work so hard to unravel the mysteries of their own operating system, but instead, their official site is full of advice that doesn't work or worse, leaves a user with more problems than they had before.
Great tutorial Sebastian! I never really did anything else but make time machine backups. Since I'm about to replace my Macbook Air with a new machine this video comes in very handy - especially what I've learned about the option to restore selective/individual data. Thanks and keep up the good work ;-)
Hi Bruce, I am very glad that the video was helpful ;) It really depends on what you want / need to do. If you want to get all your files on the new machine, the migration assistant is the best way to go. However if you want to get rid of old clutter (applications or old files) then I would recommend the 'manual' way. A complete system migration via Migration assistant is very easy and convenient, however it will probably slow down your new machine.
Thanks!! I realized that would not make sense. I did a lot of research and partitioned my external hard drive and am using one for Time Machine, one for Mac storage and one for Windows storage....I am so proud I did it and it works great! Thanks, Lovely
Thank you very much! I am glad that the video might help you in the future. I have used several Mac's in the past and time machine and migration assistant made this very easy and a good experience. I will try my best to only improve ;)
Wow, just made it work on Mountain Lion. A small note. It didn't work unless the hard discs had the same name! I had renamed the "Macintosh HD" to "Macintosh_HD" on my new computer and it didn't work (saw the contents of the new disc instead of the back-up) until I renamed it to its original name. Thanks for the video :)
Well you can certainly back up your machine to an external drive using time machine and then recover your files later. However if you then delete your files on your machine and then back it up again using time machine, you can loose your files since time machine always makes a copy of your current files on your machine. It is easier to just put the files in folders manually and save them on the external drive. Hope this helped.
I would personally select items you don't need on a daily basis like movies, maybe old photos or music and transfer them regularly to the external hard drive.
How can I select which backup I want to restore my mac to? I only seem to have the option to restore to the most recent backup I made, but I actually want to restore to about 5 backups ago. How can I do this?
Great video, I tried to use migration assistant after a clean install of High Sierra but it kept failing ( migration assistant quit unexpectedly) Hopefully I can use Time Machine to restore all my apps and data like you show here.
Thank you very much! It is definitely a good idea to use it because it is very helpful, especially in regards to the installation of a new os or when you are buying a new machine.
I have a Problem doing this with Yosemite. There is no option to choose a previous disc. If you plug in your external HD with the backup on it, it does not recognize it as such, just as a normal HD. Anybody know what to do?
Basically you can start with importing the app like any other and then when it starts it will give you some error messages about certain files that are missing. You then have to import those files one by one.
Great Video! Thanks for uploading this. Well I'm just wondering if you can just restore specific applications such as MS office or Photoshop. You mentioned about photoshop which had problem to restore, then how did you fix that problem?
I came across this old post of yours while I was seeking some guidance on my Time Machine hang up. The file in progress is stuck and it won't back up. I can't trash the file as one person suggested. What to do at the problem I can't find a solution. I'm on OS Big Sur on an iMac
This does not work for me. When I oped time machine I can't access the previous backups from my other computer. Is there a way around this? When I open my hard drive I can see all my backups are still there, but in time machine they are no appearing...
help.. I did a full backup then deleted all my computer info and reloaded mountain lion. I created a new id and then it asked to restore from backup but need to rename the id. I created another id and then restored with assistant. I found my desktop didn't transfer so I decided to do it again. but asstiant wants me to rename again. help
Any thoughts on how to use the time machine backup from an old computer to retrieve the entire photo library without replacing the new computer's library?
I have several unfinished projects saved on an external hard drive I started on an older Mac MacBook using premier pro cs6 my OS was Yosemite 10 , I tried connecting my external hard drive to a newer MacBook that I have now that also has premier pro cs6, when I try to finish the work I have started on my premier pro projects a window is displayed that says I am missing presets, how can I transfer the presets from my external drive to the newer MacBook , or is there another way to finish my incomplete premiere pro projects?
Very helpful Sebastian. So, I will be replacing my old 15 Powerbook G4 with a new MacBook Pro 15. I have been using Time Machine for several yrs. now, so do you think I would be able to use it to transfer files, apps, etc. to the newest MBP, given that my old Powerbook is running Leopard 10.5.8 to the new Lion OS -- or should I use the Migration Assistant instead? Thanks.
Very helpful video!!! For example if I want to copy an application like Ableton will it just transfer Ableton or will it transfer all my settings and information like serial number and track presets?
Great explanation! I'm going to try your method to recover apps from a 10.8 to 10.12. Do you know if the Microsoft Office or Matlab will migrate, too, using the TimeMachine?
So i purchased new imac. It didnt have imovie. Cant i just use my backup disk from old computer same operating system and restore imovie through time machine? Thanks
This is great. I am about to upgrade my macbook pro to a SSD and I wanted to do a fresh install of the OS and only select components to reinstall without cluttering my Hard drive by runnign a full system restore or using teh migration assistant. Do you have any suggestions on how I can restore my iPhoto and iTunes Library and also how I can retain my book marks in Safari? Second question, rather than using time machine to restore select files or apps, can you use it to restore a entire folder such as documents folder? Do I just select the folder and click restore?
Hi! I found very useful your Time Machine tutorial. Thanks! I have a question: Can I use a backup disk (where I backed up info from my laptop) to set Time Machine for the first time in a new iMac? Wouldn't the previous info get lost or erased at the moment of using it to set Time Machine? Salvador
Last week, I messed up my iMac pretty good. I was trying to transfer all of my data frrom my macbook to my iMac using the migration app. I obviously did something ridiculously wrong, because when I went to check my iMac, all of its old data was gone and the data that I wanted transfered from my macbook was the only thing on my iMac. I have the time machine set up and the big time capsule, but I can't figure out how to get all of my data back! Help!
I have been stuck on Time Remaining: 4 mins for about 6 hours now. It's a 1 TB drive. Do I keep waiting and see what happens? It seems very quiet like nothing is happening now. Thanks for the help.
Ok so I am getting a new hard drive. I plan to install Mountain Lion on it and start fresh. So using time machine I can restore my microsoft office suite, Iwork suite...and all my music, pictures (iphoto library), and all my movies? How will imovie, itunes, and iphoto sync with those added files? Or should I just to a cloned hard drive? The reason I don't want to clone is right now during any type of video playback my video freezes but audio keeps on going.
Hello, I want to restore old emails (from about 2015-2018) that were lost, because of my internet provider. On top of that, my external hard drive was defective (I didn't know), so I got it fixed and they told me they were able to retrieve my old emails (even gave me a password) but I have no idea how to go about doing that. If I go into time machine, applications and choose mail, I don't have the option of clicking on the restore button. Can you please help, thanks.
I have Macbook Pro 10.1 And use it to process photos. A couple of weeks ago, When i try to upload files to smugmug, it does not take me to Finder. Also cannot upgrade to Catalina - any ideass? My present version is Mojave
I have a MacBook Pro which is now about 2 years old. I last used it yesterday, watching RUclips videos on multiple tabs in Safari. Unfortunately, Safari just crashed and quit. Now, even with a shut-down, system updates and various other attempts, my Safari is still crashing as soon as I open it (I can see the multiple tabs trying to load, but cannot see the content, website url, etc). Can you suggest any other solutions to try??
hi, great video, informative, if I restore licensed apps like iWork, microsoft office, will they get reinstalled in the new OS without asking license keys? thanks
I tried to restore the Mail app after losing a mailbox, but this method does not work. Message says "...""Mail" can't be modified or deleted because it's required by macOS." I just want to restore my old settings, but won't seem to let me do it?
Well I ran into the issue that if I only recovered the photoshop application itself it said during boot up that some files were missing but also named those files. After recovering those files from time machine it worked fine.
How i get the select drive dialog ( see 4:33 ) on current macOS - in my case it opens directly with current system. And I don't see any possibility to.change it from the current drive to a previous.backup of a other mac
Hello, Good video. Questions 1) If I need to restore from a backup disk to a brand new mac only my email, including email accounts configurations, is there a way to do that? 2) When I restore an app as you showed, will it restore configuration files too or will it appear as if it was newly installed? Thanks.
I don't have an extra HD to copy my Time Machine back-up. Could I create the back-up on my iMac and then connect it to my new Mac then locate the back-up through Time Machine to transfer specific files? Great tutorial by the way.
Hi thanks for this video. I have question. I have new Imac and would like to transfer my old account settings then some apps. Should I go migration first and then use the time machine?

Hi , Does this work with Yosemite? I installed a SSD, and loaded Yosemite, but the Time Machine backup was on 10.6.8. When I select through spotlight, I don't get the same options. Is there a way to enter Time Machine to select specific files in Yosemite?

Thank you - so much better than many of the other tutorial videos. Well thought through and clearly presented.
Great! I never knew you could do this with Time Machine. Just did this ON EL Capitan from previous OS. Zero problems. Thank you.
+Sh4m4n Pi7ot Sweet! Glad to hear that I was able to help you out.

THANK YOU!! I accidentally deleted my printer and couldn't download the driver. Forgot how to access Time Machine--you saved me a major headache!
Awesome vid, I've only subscribed for like 3 days and it just keeps getting better.

thats really nice of u to take the whole night out and make this video for us! thank you so much Seb :-) well explained mate :-)
Thank you it definitely helped, I was hoping I didn’t have to manually transfer my files from my old MacBook Pro to my new one, I appreciate it!
Thanks!! I realized that would not make sense. I did a lot of research and partitioned my external hard drive and am using one for Time Machine, one for Mac storage and one for Windows storage....I am so proud I did it and it works great! Thanks, Lovely
Getting ready to transfer time machine to new mac mini. This has been very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I am glad that the video might help you in the future.
I have used several Mac's in the past and time machine and migration assistant made this very easy and a good experience.
I will try my best to only improve ;)
THANX!!! You just saved all My applications, really thought it was all gone, as i by mistake pressed "erase" i clean My Mac!!!
You have saved me from another week of stress thank you.
Glad to hear that it helped!
Lifesaver, my macbook air was stolen, and my TM/TC backup is the only place I have a lot of pertinent files. Thanks for sharing.
+Mick Farrell glad to hear that the video helped

Thankyou so much for posting such a great video, I was going to use migration assistant, but not anymore :)
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
I would personally select items you don't need on a daily basis like movies, maybe old photos or music and transfer them regularly to the external hard drive.
Perfect vid SB) I haven't used time machine before, but now I guess I'll start doing this. Thanks))
Will I have to re-register all my software with product keys or will everything just work like before
Thank you so much for your comment! It made my day, I even shared it on twitter. =)
How can I select which backup I want to restore my mac to? I only seem to have the option to restore to the most recent backup I made, but I actually want to restore to about 5 backups ago. How can I do this?
Yes, time machine is a back up solution and you need to back up to an external drive as far as I am aware.
Thanks for your video.... allow me to ask - how did you create your INTRO - looks fancy. Are you using software from FCPX? Thanks, Frank.
Do you mean wether time machine takes up extra space on the external hard drive?
Thanks for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it.
Great video, I tried to use migration assistant after a clean install of High Sierra but it kept failing ( migration assistant quit unexpectedly) Hopefully I can use Time Machine to restore all my apps and data like you show here.

Thanks for this additional advice, Sebastian. Very helpful.

Well I'm just wondering if you can just restore specific applications such as MS office or Photoshop. You mentioned about photoshop which had problem to restore, then how did you fix that problem?
Did it work ? I have the exact same question about ms office too
Maybe transferring the files manually one by one using time machine works?
I am not 100% sure but you might need to choose a different back up in the lower left corner or from the finder.
Difficult to say though.
I came across this old post of yours while I was seeking some guidance on my Time Machine hang up. The file in progress is stuck and it won't back up. I can't trash the file as one person suggested. What to do at the problem I can't find a solution. I'm on OS Big Sur on an iMac
Oh I am sorry to hear that. Is there anything I can help you with?
Oh wow that sucks. I honestly never came across any issue like that.
Are you the administrator on your system?
Thank you! saved me a lot of headache.
Thank you for watching!

Yes exactly, that is possible without any issues.
Oh yes that should definitely work. I have done that a couple of times already.
