    High resolution means a high number of pixels per area - I think the term you're looking for is that they use lossless compression meaning you don't get the distortion that JPG compression introduces.
    A 1x1 pixel image can be high resolution if you shrink it to 1/300 the area of a pixel, likewise a 1,000,000 square pixel image cannot be considered high resolution if it's applied to the side of a cruise ship.
    PNG images employ a lossless compression system which usually results in larger file sizes than lossless compression. By definition lossless [edit:should be lossy] compression throws aways parts of your image away to reduce file size.

      However in the olden days you could refer to the graphical Fidelity of film camera photos as resolution. It's only in the digital age that resolution means pixels. In other words your getting old...

      Not sure if I misunderstood what you were saying or if it was a typo, but lossless compression doesn't throw away any part of your image. I think you mean lossy, such as the compression technique used in jpeg? :)

    I actually knew already all of them.. :-(
    But I have another one which many people might not know. When making a screenshot with the cross-hair (cmd+shift+4) press the spacebar and the cursor will turn into a camera and allow you to take a screenshot of just one window instead of the whole screen or a manually selected area.
    Also what some people might not know is that Spotlight can actually do calculations for you. Just open Spotlight (quick way: cmd+space) and type your calculation. It even knows some advanced stuff like 2^4 or 15 mod 6.

      Saying "hold option" is a bit confusing for Mac screenshots since option serves two roles.
      Holding option (e.g. cmd+option+shift+3, or cmd+option+shift+4) makes it save to clipboard instead of to disk, so you can paste the image into another application. After releasing cmd+shift+4 or cmd+option+shift+4, you get a crosshair, but you can change the crosshair to a camera by pressing spacebar. You can click on any window with the camera to capture just that window, or you can option+click on any window to capture just that window without the dropshadow.

    Better than I expected! Some commentary:
    1: For most people PNG doesn't use that much space. You have an insane resolution and you happened to take a mostly photographic screenshot. If you have such a resolution, you also quite likely have much storage space. JPEG doesn't support transparency which would help when capturing windows. TIFF is no higher quality than PNG, just uncompressed. It's probably just faster to capture, when a PNG screenshot doesn't usually take inordinately long to be compressed. Personally I only set the "location" setting to drop screenshots in a folder that isn't my desktop.
    2: In the Apple ecosystem, an encrypted disk image is much more convenient. You can just mount it and eject it. No hassle and not as sensitive to mistakes. This is how the original FileVault used to work. Advanced use (e.g. creating and compacting sparse images) does come down to the terminal again.
    4: That's the only reason I leave it in the menu bar. For adjusting the volume, using keys works just fine. But if I want to change the default audio device it's a real improvement over the alternative. Using Spotlight to jump directly to the right preference pane comes pretty close, though. You can do that!
    5: In general, programs *should* keep your computer awake if they need to. Of course they don't all do it. Generally I set my computers so they don't go to sleep on AC power. The display can turn off all it wants, and I often do it manually using the keyboard command. That usually suffices for me. If I do want it to go to sleep unattended after something finishes, I'd have to look up the flags. You can use caffeinate to start a command-line program, or use -w to wait for a running process to exit. You can pass -i instead of -u to let just the display doze off.

      Tell me if you knew this one...
      If you are arranging and moving files in folders, if there's a file you want to move from lets say folder A to folder F (and showing all the letter in the middle of course) you can actually dragg it and drop it from the path bar (where shows the name of all folders at the bottom) you can drag and drop it anywhere you like without opening that folder at all

    Here's one that you apparently aren't aware of (or if you are, you aren't using it in this video). In Terminal, the tab key will auto-complete commands and file names. For the "defaults" command, type d-e-f, then press tab. For the "caffeinate" command, type c-a-f, then tab. It will work whenever there is only one "correct" completion -- for the "openssl" command, you need to type o-p-e-n-s-s, then tab, because there are multiple commands which start with "open". If there is more than one command available, if you press tab twice, it will show a list of all matching commands. So if you type o-p-e-n, then tab, you will be given a list containing the "open", "opendiff", "opensnoop", and "openssl" commands. The existence of the "opensnoop" command is why you need to type out almost all of the "openssl" command before it will auto-complete it.
    This works on OS X and most other unix-like shells.

    As Web Designer, PNG is usually bigger that JPEG. It is not if you are taking a screenshot of something with less than 10 or so colors or of a gradient (a smooth transition of one color to another), PNG is better in file size, and the file doesn't ever get artifacts(added pixels that are not part of the original file).

    Hey dude I watched your advanced mac tricks video and it was really cool. I love the caffeinate thing I tried it for a little bit and it worked wonders, but I have found an even easier way to prevent your mac from sleeping in the OS X operating system. It is called HOT CORNERS (not mad just trying to emphasize lol) 1) Go to system preferences 2) Click desktop & screen saver 3) click screen saver tab 4) click little button on bottom right that says hot corners 5) Pick any corner you like and hit the blue button and click "disable screen saver" 6) now whenever you put your pointer in the corner where you put "disable screen saver" it keeps the mac from sleeping until you pull the pointer out of that corner then it will go back to sleep based on your normal setting. I found this trick to be extremely handy and easier than opening terminal and typing all that. Plus you don't have to calculate how many seconds you want it to last. You can turn it off anytime you want by simply moving the pointer. P.S. I would also like to mention sticky which I used to use on my Windows computer all the time but it always turned off so quickly and wasn't worth it most times. But I got my new Mac and instantly fell in love with the Sticky keys because it makes all those command, option, control, keyboard shortcuts a lot easier because you don't have to hold down all the keys at the same time. Just some opinions I had that I thought you might be interested in. Thanks for your time hope you took the time to read all this.

    Tip 2: Better use PGP / GPG tools, you dont need to use a command line and you dont need to give the recipient your password, you just encrypt it for their key. PGP is pretty much industry standard for sending encrypted messages and files.

    For file encryption you can use Disk Utility to create an encrypted DMG and just type the password when mounting, rather than using Terminal to create a new file each time you want access.

    Great tips. As an original Mac 128 owner, I honestly had never used 4 out of these. One thing that really bugs me about MacOS is all the things they hide and don't really inform users of. Very few people know to hit the Option key when clicking on the Finder GO menu to reveal the Library. Why hide it? No one knows you can rename an entire folder of files right in the finder. There's tons of shit like that that drives me nuts.

      Not bog-standard JPEGs. There is a lossless JPEG standard that was created in 1993, and there's JPEG-2000. Heck, there might even be some more, but as far as standard JPEG goes, even at quality 100 you're still going to have a lossily compressed output.

      @@jawr1215 No.. that's literally impossible. Though I have often used jpg at 95% compression to send to printers, since it's REALLY close to being lossless, but it's a compression algorithm, so by it's very nature can not be lossless. PNG and TIFF are used because they are lossless. As in.. the saved file is identical to the original.. which is impossible with a lossy file type.

      Ines Manzo Totally understand! I thought Mac's were supposed to be more simple, easier and yet when I switched over from PC to Mac two years ago, I hated it for several months. I couldn't believe it. My niece and daughter both offered to buy it from me because they heard me complain enough about it. Things were hidden, basic stuff like getting out of a window, I was SO frustrated. But gradually I got used to it and now am very happy, my pc laptops were not as sturdy and would break at the hinges, think that happened to 3-4 of our laptops. I love the finger pad but most of all that it is sturdier than any pc I've had. That reminds me, my teen's laptop has broken on the side, cheap plastic so add that one to my list of broken pc's. :(

    Tip: interchanging file formats do not alter the resolution in any way. It is the same resolution no matter if you save a 150MB tiff or a 400KB JPG. You only change the way those pixels are saved. TIFF is uncompressed lossless, so is PNG, jpg is a lossy format that saves disk space and therefore sacrifices quality. For screenshots JPG is sufficient.

      I sold my Mac just last year, it was a Mac mini, and I still have my 2006 MacBook, but I'm getting a MacBook pro maybe next month so these tips should be useful! Although for keeping my computer on, I use the app Caffiene that probably everyone knows about, and I'm guessing it just sends those same terminal commands aha

    How come when you have to use a Terminal on a Mac, people are cool with it, but when you do the exact same thing on a Linux distro, people think that you have to be like a terminal whiz?

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 8 лет назад +6

      It may be because you have to do it far more often on Linux while it's quite rare you need to on the Mac. There are also a bunch of apps that surface these commands via a GUI, like Onyx.

    • @dangputerz
      @dangputerz 7 лет назад +5

      because many users coming from windows are terrified of command lines... and change... and power. Mac users getting into the terminal are seeking it. Many linux users are needing it to complete basic tasks.

    • @cocoa1996
      @cocoa1996 7 лет назад +1

      Not really. You can do everything via the GUI nowadays

    • @dangputerz

      change users password age? change how often fschk runs? I can name a bunch of things off of the top of my head you can't name a gui for.
      For power stuff... you will always need a terminal.

    • @SamAndrew27
      @SamAndrew27 7 лет назад +1

      Yep, as others said here, it's because SO many things *have* to be done via terminal in Linux, depending on distro of course.

  • @Atbr

    One thing to keep in mind is that it's good practise to never paste stuff you find right into your terminal. There is a small chance the source your copying from has been compromised and that the text you're copying contains hidden commands that can really screw your system over. Always paste the text into a text editor or something like that first, and then copy it from there to your terminal. Also stay away from anything containing sudo if you don't know what it does.

      It depends on what you screenshot. If it is a plain web page with a uniform background and some text/images, it would be compressed really well, but if it is something with a lot of details like El-Capitan standard wallpapers, it won't be compressed well using PNG's algos. In fact, JPEG's algos are designed in such a way that they best fit for photos, but when you compress, you may lose some info (pictures become a little blurry, lose some little details and may have noise) while PNG compression is lossless

    Dude that option sound icon trick is going to change my life! For the others I just wish that instead of having certain commands programmed into the terminal, there were buttons in a graphic user interface. I've been disappointed with the lack of customization in mac os, the minimalism can be barren at times, for example I wish that the login screen would stay awake longer, or that I could set the time I have to go to login, because I do allot of yoga and sometimes after a session I'm soo blissed out that my brainwaves are actually at a lower meditative frequency which is soo chill that sitting down at the desk is a whole jedi dissertation.

  • @billybobjoe198

    A PNG isn't "Higher resolution" or "Better pixel density".
    A PNG is lossless. A Jpeg isn't.
    Seriously, how can anyone running a computer channel not know this?
    This is about as basic as it gets.

    Another cool helpful tip for those wanting to create an image of a hard drive, optical disc etc;
    diskutil list (check the list for the /dev/disk* where * corresponds to the drive you want to drive you want to image)
    diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk*
    Then after that;
    cat /dev/disk* > *output file path*
    As long as you have read access to a raw device, It will dump the contents of that device to an image, which you can use for backup reasons AND is a great way to image a single partition CD-ROM. :)

    First of all great video. I didn't want to skip ahead because there was too much talking or deadening long pauses. It was straight to the point, good flow and useful information. Well done. I am looking for some advice also. I have a late 2009 27" iMac and I will be reformatting and reinstalling OS X for a second time in the last 6 months. I barely use it really, basically I have it for iTunes purposes, I store my pictures and I go online with it once a month to pay the bills. How can I upgrade it relatively cheap to keep it for my basic needs and keep it running for another few years. The ram is already maxed, so put in a SSD is all I've come up with. Any further suggestions.

    Having trouble with the sensor that detects earphones on a late 2011 macbook pro. That port is also for optical output (who among us plebs would know that? red laser light stays on).
    I found Tip 4 to be very interesting. But I wish that Apple would not always go all minimalist on us to hide commands. Sure, they are there, sure they are useful...) But if you didn't even know they were even available, you would not look (that is human nature).
    At this point, given that the sensor is the hardware that is failing (found that out some time ago) and the solution was to get bluetooth earpods from Sony (not bad), I have detoured around the problem and have a good periph for other uses.
    Yup it works. So long as the sensor does not get flaky and try to give the port to the optical output.
    Yup, it goes between headphones in the funky port, bluetooth earpods, and the onboard speakers (which are also failing for some reason, hence the earphones/pods).
    THANKS! But no thanks apple for being a damned minimalist nightmare at times.
