    Thank you for this. I broke my clavicle 7 years ago and went back 6 months later for my follow up and I mentioned I had strange feelings in my shoulder … he said to come back after a year but refused to remove the metalwork because I have a condition called CRPS which I have in my shoulder. 7 years later and I have not been able to lie on my left side at all … I don’t have a lot of movement in the whole arm and I feel that everything is ‘tight’ in the area around my neck … causing head pain and deep pain.
    Zip to last week and I went to see another Consultant ( my 3rd ) and this one took an x ray and said it looked like one of the screws was going into arthritic bone opposite, so he said he could remove the plate and take out the AC joint and scale down the arthritic bone.
    Am at the pain clinic in September as I have numerous pain issues … so will discuss then ..but if taking out the plate and pins (he is leaving the ligament reconstruction “basket” alone) then I think I will go for it.
    The interesting thing I heard you say was about the nerve block you had. I think that any operation I have in future, this should be considered, to allow the nerves to settle a little before the feeling comes back.

      Hi! How was your recovery following your hardware removal? Was wondering if I could ask you a few questions…
      Was the procedure outpatient or did you have to stay in the hospital for a night or more?
      Was pain rough afterwards? Will I need actual real pain meds or can I just take ibuprofen?
      Does your arm have to be in a sling after the removal?
      I apologize for the annoying questions. I’m having my broken clavicle plate and ten screws removed on 12/07/2022 and am just wondering what the whole thing is going to be like.
      Hoping yours went smoothly! ❤

      Hi Sarah, I’d get that checked out in case there is a problem with the metal work. (My shoulder is more clicky than the other one when I move it). I’m not sure what country you live in as they seem to remove the metal work at different times depending on where you live. I’m glad I had mine removed personally as I hated the feel of it under my skin. I hope all goes well.

    Pippa, I am contemplating this same removal. It feels so awkward touching that area that I really don't want to ponder avoiding it for the rest of my life. I have some strange sensation in that entire area. I'm curious if you experienced the same, and how, if at all, that has changed since removing the plate? ~ Brendan

    • @pippaw4779
      @pippaw4779  Год назад +1

      Hi there, personally for me removal of metal was the very best thing and I found the procedure easy compared with having the initial op. I hated feeling the metal under my skin! Even today I still have some nerve damage - some loss of sensation around the scar but I had that from the fracture op. It is definitely a personal choice but for me it was the right one! Best of luck! Did you watch my video I made a few weeks after the removal of plate? Its been a few years now since I had the metal out and im completely normal. I dont mind the scar as I had that anyway from first op.
      Let me know what you decide! 😊😊

      Thanks Pippa for sharing. I also have nerve damaged since the first surgery, but I'm determine to take out all instrumentation as it is so painful. Wearing a bra is painful, touching that area is painful. In 2 months I have booked an appointment to see how it is. The bone is healed for 6 months now, but the surgeon said that I have to wait 1 year and then we decide if we can take all out. I hope it is possible because I can't touch that area anymore.
      Best of luck!

    I'm currently 72hours after plate removal and pain right after surgery was just as horrific as the first time I had the surgery. This time I took no pain killers due to my severe allergies and also avoided all nsaids due to my personal preference (as they interfere with clotting of wounds and slow down healing) I do have strong will and tolerance for pain, but it was not fun. I'm only wondering now when would be a good timing for small amounts of exercise that don't involve my arm off course, I haven't found any info regarding this....... Anyone?

      Yazar I’m so sorry to hear you are in pain. I’d advise the painkillers for a day or two so you don’t stiffen up? My surgery for removal was much better than initial surgery. I was advised to exercise and move within my pain thresholds but I was just about back to work on a pc the next day - just a bit sore. I was advised not to lift heave weights for 6 weeks. I just lived normally within what I could do. Very quickly I was back to normal - within 6-8 weeks! Good luck!

Was pain bad enough where you needed strong prescribed pain meds or will ibuprofen take care of it? Did you have to be in any sort of an arm sling afterwards? Sorry for being that annoying person who peppers you with a bunch of questions. I have my broken clavicle plate removal in three days and I’m just so curious as to how I’m going to feel afterwards. Andi Morina hi Andi, if I remember I think my injured side was slightly bumpy after surgery but it has smoothed out now and pretty identical to my non injured side now. It’s fine now it’s almost a year post op. It feels normal! Hope you are recovering ok! Pippa

      Hello there, With me I was moving my arm and shoulder normally very quickly , I’d say within 1-2 weeks I was back to normal. I would be careful for the first 6 weeks.

      فاطمه ،، hello there, yes I believe it can be dangerous and I think the people who do a lot of sport are most at risk and so they often recommend the plate is removed

    Hi lovely, how have you been since you’ve had it taken oit? I had my clavicle plate and screws put in 7 years ago. I am experiencing chronic upper back pain muscle knotting and tightness. I also cannot wear a seatbelt and it hurts doing certain stretches. Have you had any bad side effects the last 2 years since it’s been out? Thank you.

    • @pippaw4779
      @pippaw4779  2 года назад +1

      Hi Nikki, that sounds awful but maybe the back problems could be a separate problem? I’d advise to go to see a doctor. I have had no problems since removal, wearing a seatbelt is still a bit sensitive and the scar aches in cold damp weather but movement is normal the scar is neat. I’m glad I had the metal work taken out as I could see it through my skin and it was uncomfortable. Let us know how you get on? Best wishes to you Nikki

      Pritam Chanda hi there, you need to be careful for a few weeks as there is a small risk of refracture post op. Your doctor should advise you. I was advised to exercise within my limitations and it was fine to carry shopping bags etc as soon as I felt strong enough. Best of luck

      @@pippaw4779 Thanks Pippa. Well, at the moment everything is ok no infection, scar healed well and just in a week I have a cheecking to see how the bone is healing... as you say this is a horrible injury because if you dont operate you may have a malunion but if you go throught surgery you avoid malunion but got a plate, screws, numbness and a nasty scar... and a second process to remove it...
      I have one more question. Did you get nerve damage in both operations? Did you recovered the nevers?
      I read that there is more risk to damege the nervers in a second operation because of the scar and the nervers are not that visible as in the first one.

      @@andrespalacios6356 hi, yes I did get a bit of nerve damage from the injury and the ops but it’s not too bad - just a bit of strange sensation/numbness but I’ve got used to it. My physio told me to keep touching the scar and all around it to stimulate the nerve return post op. It has not gone back to normal but I live with it fine.
