      I have to admit--you helped a great deal. All the way back to when I first returned to play as a MK in what was it, 2019? And I was looking to hire sorcerers for my journey and had a hell of a time finding good ones. I never forgot those helpful tips you gave, and started to look more closely at what made the difference between highly effective sorcerer pawns and those that were less so. Even though I don't play "in the red" I remember your advice.
      New players looking to get into those vocations that seem to do well with sorcerer pawns, indeed even do BETTER with good ones in their party, shouldn't have to sort through literally hundreds of sorcerer pawns trying to find those that are effective.
      Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    I see at 5:58 that you use the Core Skills Levitate, Focused Bolt and Magick Agent. Do you recommend them? I read that pawns never use Levitate, someone said that their pawn kept spamming Focused Bolt instead of using other spells, and there are others that say Magick Agent is useless. As I'm new to this game, I'm afraid to acquire such skills because they cannot be disabled like the spells. I would like my pawn to become a good healer (she can't be a sorceress, just a mage) but I also want her to be able to defend herself.

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  2 года назад +4

      I would agree that pawns don’t use Levitate all that much, but they do use it. I suppose you don’t HAVE to give it, but I do-for those “just in case” moments. Anyway, it’s not like they’ll use it inappropriately or inadvertently when you don’t want them to.
      Some don’t like Magic Agent ONLY because they believe it “takes too long to cast.” That’s a myth. I used captured frames and it barely takes them a frame (game running at 60 FPS) to start up. I call it an early defense warning as pawns will automatically (if they are given the skill) fire it up long before battle starts but as soon as the AI detects enemies that sometimes aren’t in frame (Death comes to mind).
      As for Focused Bolt-I never leave home without that either. Pawns use it to break crates and boxes mostly but more importantly when facing Wraiths and Spectres…really important if you play as any vocation that can’t directly kill them yourself, for example, as a Ranger. One HFB can take take out lots of enemies, last night while live streaming the pawns I was running with-the same three in this video-used FB and HFB to kill or damage Wraiths, Goblins, Strigoi, Harpies, Sirens, and Death.
      I’d also add that many who give that advice had a bad experience with a terribly built Sorcerer pawn, OR (in my experience) don’t have a Sorc pawn themselves. Additionally there are those out there who hand out such advice that don’t run with pawns at all, but that’s all I’ve ever used in my 10 years. And I could run solo, but why? Doesn’t mean I’m a bad player, or less skilled, just my preference to use pawns!
      As for the person who reported that was all their pawn used? I’d bet their pawn was a Scather and that it was built (given the wrong inclinations and other skills) badly. Most people DON’T, in fact, know how to build a Sorcerer pawn. I literally have run into hundreds of Sorcerer pawns that are, absolutely terrible because they are Scathers! Or because the other player gave their pawns useless skills for BBI (the Dark enchantment instead of Holy, Lassitude, Maelstrom, Seism).

    • @AleDrunkenKnight
      @AleDrunkenKnight 2 года назад +1

      @@Gemmalady Thank you very much! As a new player I'm worried about screwing up my little pawn. I'm still in the early game but I already got attached to her. So those negative comments in the Internet made me afraid to try the skills. But now I'm going to invest in those skills the next time I start the game!
      Pawns are part of the game mechanics so I see no shame in using them. In fact, they are one of the best things about this game, they provide a more immersive experience, unlike followers of other games like Skyrim or Dragon Age.
      It seems a pawn's inclination is very important (I didn't know about scathers). I also didn't pay attention to it but now I've watched your other video on "How to correctly use inclination potions" and it seems a guardian or medicant pawn would be more suitable for me. The game is more complex than it seems at first. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    So I can understand the time in grade piece: Does this mean that, for example, if I want a sorcerer pawn, it is better to start as a mage, get it to 9 (for the augment), go to fighter to get it to 3 (for the augment), and then ranger to 8 (for the augment) before going to sorcerer, where I will keep it there? If not, is there a point before the post-game where it is better to get the non-magic user vocations taken care of?

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  Год назад

      Great question!!
      If there are augments I want for a sorcerer pawn that comes from the physical vocations such as Sinew (Rank 5, Fighter) there are a couple of schools of thought surrounding that, and I’ve done both. The first school of thought is to go about it the way you discussed ie start the pawn as a Fighter, keep it there until the pawn has enough DP to get the augment, switch to mage, fully rank the pawn up to get necessary augments, such as Attunement (Rank 9) then switch the pawn to Sorcerer for rest of the game, ostensibly to level 200. Benefit to pawn is a little more DEF but less MATT.
      Or, min-max the sorcerer pawn whereby the benefit to the pawn is the highest MATT they can gain. The player would then try to get to Grigori and post-dragon around level 45 - 50 or so, at which point the player would use the “Duke’s Men Exploit” to pick up any desired augments from other vocations **without** leveling up said vocations. That’s the Mage 1 - 10, Sorcerer 11 - 200 build. Because EXP gained below level 100 has greater gains than above level 200.
      Going back to your example then, presumably that pawn would have more DEF, STA, and STR but less MATT than the min-maxed pawn.
      Thus it depends on your overall goal. Either way, as long as the pawn then spends the rest of its life playing as sorcerer you’ll be putting in the “time in grade” for it to become a good sorcerer.
      Another example that hopefully makes sense: people who create a min-maxed Strider (MAX STR for the highest physical attacks a pawn can have) don’t switch their pawn from Warrior to Strider until level 200. But from that time forward the pawn ONLY plays Strider. I’ve done that with Barahir, my Strider, and she’s deadly in that position because I’ve never ever switched her out of that role. Most players on PS4 and PC have never known her as anything else. Although a few people on PS4 have taken her out as a Warrior way back when.
      My point being is that the “jack of all trades” pawn or the pawn that the player constantly swaps between different vocations just to get RC and please others, doesn’t seem as effective as the one that gets to their final vocation at some point **and stays there** for the duration.
      Hope that makes sense.

    @merrickmiller1224 Год назад

    Keep in mind, Augments will effect behavior. If you have the augment where you have a chance to survive with 1 hp. Your Pawn knows when it will trigger and will take hits it would avoid normally.
    Gemma isnt kidding either about the Sorc debate for spell loadouts.
    I highly do not suggest teaching your pawn focused bolt and magic agent .
    Also having a loadout with each spell linking spell can be more desirable to end game players since we are more likely to be running multiple Sorcs in a party.
    (I like 2 or 3 with a melee Arisen)

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  Год назад +2

      I actually timed how long it takes a pawn to cast Magic Agent.
      Here’s how I did it: the game runs at anywhere between 58 and 60 fps on PC. I’m using a program to measure that, and it’s not dinput8, rather it’s an NVIDIA one. I can also set up my editing program to match the frame rate of the game. Going frame-by-frame-it takes as little as one frame (1/60th sec) in battle. To be fair pawns usually cast it before battle starts ie when they first notice the enemy.
      Magic Bolt is hardly ever used, rather the mage or sorc pawn will cast Holy first then use HFB; to my mind it’s preferable in waiting for that sorc or mage to fire up HFB than some spell that not as effective against wraiths. Esp for when I play any physical character-since I don’t use throwables or consumables against them. Depends on your playstyle I suppose.
      And while SOME augments MAY affect behavior-the link is tenuous.

To do that I would have to start a new game and lose all the equipment, the rc, the gold and everything, right? I would waste all the hours I was in BBI farming. • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  2 года назад

      The Knowledge Chair only lets you switch between the second and third inclinations. To switch the primary directly you would need to use an Inclination Elixir.
      You can purchase Inclination Elixirs from Johnathan, an NPC located inside the tent at the Encampment (where you fought the Hydra). He becomes available after completing the quest, A Rude Awakening.
      You can not change the Inclinations of hired pawns, indeed you can not change anything about them (except by equipping them with certain weapons, armor, or rings).
      Your actions in-game influence your pawn’s behavior, as well as using the Elixirs and Knowledge Chair.
      BTW-inclinations “decay” over time unless reinforced with Elixirs. So, the further you progress through the game, chances are the primary *might* change, almost certainly the secondary and tertiary (3rd) will.
      I have two videos on each subject-one on how to use the potions, one on the Knowledge Chair.

      @Gemmalady  2 года назад

      @@ItIsMeScorpio Ah! If all you are getting asked are “yes” or “no” questions that means your pawn (currently) has no second or third inclination. So the question being asked only has to do with the primary. This is nothing to either get alarmed about, think it won’t change, or that it’s rare. You could be so early in the game (level-wise) that your pawn hasn’t had a chance to form (learn) any behaviors other than the one you chose (through that series of questions you answered) when creating your pawn.
      For a Fighter pawn, I recommend Mitigator-Scather-Utilitarian-Challenger or Mitigator-Scather-Utilitarian-Medicant.
      However I’m not fond of any pawns-other than Mages and Sorcerers-having Medicant in the 4th slot. There’s a reason but I won’t go into it here.
      I know you said your new Fighter pawn is Scather primary-that’s fine for now. As you level up and they gain more experience fighting various enemies, learning quests, and their way around the map, you might consider the combination I suggested above for inclinations. Mitigator prime *DOES NOT* mean your pawn will be less aggressive, what it means is they’ll remove all the trash out of their way to taking out the garbage!

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  2 года назад

      @@ItIsMeScorpio No, what they *do* learn is bestiary (enemy) knowledge, quest knowledge, and area (locations, or where everything is) knowledge.
      They may also learn higher level heavy attacks.
      And, for the record-you *need not* play as your pawn’s vocation for them to learn *how-to*
      They *can* learn bad habits from you though, no matter their vocation.
      What do I mean by this? If you pick up drops from enemies or loot item piles in the middle of fighting often enough, your pawn will do the same. They may *even* interrupt their attacks to do so (Acquisitor). Spamming the Help or Come Here commands while in battle will cause your pawn to become a Guardian pawn.
      Scather-Guardian or Guardian-Scather pawns are one of the worst combinations a player can have for their pawn-it won’t know whether to attack or protect, so the pawn will act confused.

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  2 года назад +4

      That’s called the “jack of all trades master of none” build. The pawn has to be 500 STR, 500 MATT, 500 DEF, 500 MDEF in order to pull it off. Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done? Absolutely NO.
      The pawn can play anything but won’t be as effective as one that stays in one role-even if the build is what I gave above.
      Instead what I do is create an Arisen that can play anything and give the pawn one ROLE to stick with. Then I hire whatever pawn I need to pick up the slack.
      If you’re worried your pawn won’t get hired because you can’t change it-don’t be. That’s ridiculous. People usually hire the BEST. They don’t want “average.”
      Don’t be fooled by the pawn ranking system either. That’s BS, pure and simple.
      My pawns get hired all the time-in fact my strider, ranger(s), mage and fighter never lack for hires.
      My sorcerer on PC doesn’t get hired as often as I’d like but that’s because everyone seems to have one. On the other hand I ran with three sorcs in my livestream last night while I played as Ranger-what a literal blast I had. They destroyed everything!!

Just make sure the core MAG is at 600 or better for insane damage. stackoverflow.github.io/dragons-dogma-stat-planner/ Rings like the Ogre Bone will increase knockdown resistance, and definitely explore rings that give elemental resistances for things like Fire and Dark (Daimon loves tossing out triple Comestion and Darkness spells)

    • @Gemmalady
      @Gemmalady  2 года назад +2

      What I said was, “once you’ve decided on their final vocation, it’s best to leave them in that position in order to develop into a really proficient companion.”
      This doesn’t mean that one can’t switch your main pawn from one vocation to another, it’s more about *constantly* switching them from one vocation to another to another to another. “Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none.” People sometimes advertise their pawns for hire with, “I can change my pawn to whatever vocation you (the player looking to hire a pawn) need.” This isn’t a good idea, as the pawn never really learns to get any good at any ONE position.
      Before you switch your level 200 pawn from one vocation to another, ask yourself these questions: (1) “Has my pawn got the core stats that would make it any good in its new position?” Remember that a Fighter pawn needs a decent core STR (strength) stat to make a difference. You need to understand that even when using a permanently enchanted shield-all the Fighter pawn, or indeed any pawn, gets is the actual enchantment value on the shield and no more-that is, their core magic attack plays no role.
      (2) “Once I put them in their new position, am I willing to put the time in to have them learn their new position?” Going back to your initial question this means that your pawn CAN learn their new role, given time and effort.
      (3) “Do I understand that I must change augments and inclinations which suit their new role?” So many people change their pawns into a new vocation but fail to give the pawn the proper augments and inclinations to suit that role. Fighters and mages are nothing alike!
      (4) “Do I have the best armor, weapons, and rings to equip on my main pawn, which suits their new role?”
      What all these questions are designed to answer is the *basic* one of, “Is my main pawn *optimized* for its new role?” If you can answer yes, then it’s completely fine to switch a level 200 pawn from one vocation to another. They CAN learn their new job. If their stats are against them-then it will be more difficult for them to be as effective as another pawn who has the chops-read that as core stats-doing the same role.

      @@Brynnu Yes, you can use the dinput8 tool to mod the stats of your pawn, as long as you know what you're doing with it. Many people don't, and as a result, have created pawns that no one else can utilize since they show up as corrupted in the Rift, and elsewhere. The other thing I've noticed is that some pawns that had been perfectly fine before the player screwed around with dinput8 are now subtly messed up. I don't have the heart to tell the player that I will never use their pawn again. The stats are fine but they messed about with the inclinations in such a way as to make the pawns "odd" for some reason.

      The ONLY reliable way I know is to completely wipe your main account save and start completely over. Only then will the game reward you with another Savior Ring for doing the quest again.
      It is possible for players to have more than one Savior Ring per account, but that’s only because they traded with other players or asked for another via gifting from other players.

      @@alexmercer8852 there’s a way to do it, I read somewhere. But it’s time consuming and risky. Here’s the process: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/684236-dragons-dogma-dark-arisen/67871350?page=1
      Funny thing, Karmikazzee was a legend in DDDA on PS3 and PS4. Even he wouldn’t do it himself, prob because he didn’t want to risk his accounts.
      For myself-I have much much better luck purifying BBI level 3 gears and going for Master Rings. I have several +100 Magic, +100 Strength, + 490 Stamina, + 500 Health rings just going that route instead, and they are far more useful than the Savior Ring. I generally put the Savior Ring on my Mage and Sorc pawns. I put skill rings on my Strider pawns (with some other +STR ring). Fighter and Warrior pawns get +STR rings. Rangers get the +STR/HP/STA rings.
      I usually give away any Savior Rings I acquire after I gift to my mage and sorc pawns. Meaning once I get Savior Ring on those accounts I gifted them to originally (thru legit means) I always have 1 to gift to next new alt.
      I don’t want to risk a trade ban since I hire so many people’s pawns (including my own alts).

    I'm playing sorcerer & my pawn is a strider. We are both lvl 43. Playing on hard mode.
    Do master & pawn have to be the same vocation to teach the AI?
    Or perhaps it's enough having a rift strider pawn teach my strider pawns AI?
    Have been currently running sorcerer, my strider pawn, rift strider pawn & rift mage pawn.
    Should probably add another sorcerer in the mix (spell sync) & perhaps lose the mage.
    Better to make my pawn into a sorcerer or keep getting rift sorcerer pawn's instead?

      I have a min max strength Ranger Arisen with a Sorcerer as pawn. I didn’t have to play Sorcerer for my pawn to know “what to do.” Some of the best pawns I knew on PS3 had Arisen who never touched a staff! So, no you don’t have to play as something for your pawn to learn. Just give them the correct behaviors (inclinations) and let ‘em loose. Other players hiring your pawn will also contribute to their knowledge, as well.
