  • With its dirty-minded characters, jarring politics, torture scenes and egg-laying Hawk Women, the book version of 1980's Flash Gordon is truly bizarre.

I have a theory about the author of this novelization. The porn parody "Flesh Gordon" came out in 1974, six years before "Flash Gordon," the book the author is adapting. So when he set out to write his book, perhaps the 1974 version was on his mind. At that point the 1980 film hadn't been released yet, so the earlier movie was currently the most colorful and recent version of the story.

I miss the days when people crowbarring politics into entertainment franchises was rare enough to stand out.

I did go on a date once to our local Odeon to see Flesh Gordon. My boyfriend's sister asked if she could come along and we said okay. Even though his sister was 18 at the time he was mortified as the film was a lot smuttier than we expected. He thought it would be a bit of a laugh but as we watched it he kept apologising to us both. We stayed till the end though. 🤣🤣🤣

I read this book a long long time ago (as a teen), and I'd just about managed to persuade myself I was misremembering the bore worms. Ah well.

I read it on Archive.org. As I say in the video, no one's making money from this book, which seems very short-sighted to me.

@@culturewarp I found Flash Gordon 1980 was Flesh Gordon without the sex,the campy humour, the same desert place,"Gordon's alive"corresponding with "Up yours Gordon."Also when I first saw Flash Gordon I thought he and Princess Aura were going to make out like Flesh Gordon and Princess Armoura did.

Was it secretly written by Gene Roddenberry.

Great report. I enjoyed seeing the movie when I was 9 and missed most of the erotic business. Saw it again last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, although I was confused that my older sister took me to see it.
Would like to know if something similar was done with Krull; similar vintage, vaguely unknown...

I was around 10 when this movie came out. My born-again christian parents wouldn't let me see the movie because it was jesus, not Flash Gordon, who "saved every one of us." I was, however, allowed to buy and read the book. Yeah.
