  • Our Toyota GR Yaris has never been on the dyno so we thought that we'd run it up against our new Subaru WRX and see how they compare using two very different boost strategies. Special thanks to Alex from Underground Performance in Melbourne.

    Subaru is limiting the boost/torque on the 2.4 to protect the CVT transmissions. I think they get tax exemptions for selling more CVT cars with EyeSight safety stuff so they’re trying to push them hard globally this generation. The 6 speed can handle 360ft-lbs safely but they wouldn’t dare give it a different map because people would make a fuss about them “gimping the CVT.”

    • @fullboost

      Split case 6 speed probably wouldn't like that torque figure as it is 😂 if it was a genuine STI 6 speed, engine would only be a problem. Even then, prime motorsport in america made 500whp on factory fa24 so who knows what this generation will bring 🤷‍♂️

    • @blueridge8992
      @blueridge8992 2 года назад

      @@longdomedia yeah you need a tuner that knows what they’re doing to run 360ft-lbs with a WRX 6-speed but it can be done reliably. You just can’t pour the torque on until higher rpm. Plenty of people have cranked the FA20 up to 400/400 but it’s only a matter of time before the transmission shatters. I imagine Prime’s ‘22 would last around 3 WOT pulls on the street at that power level.

      @@fullboost Great video! Depending how much headroom there is left in the stock fuel system, it may or may not be worth trying to mod the wrx. Sure the engine itself might be good for a lot more power but if you can't get aftermarket direct injectors for the car or a HPFP to reach your power goals it could all be a moot point. Also 10k on a motec doesn't sound like a great investment unless this is going to be a serious track car.

    Here is my premonitions, buy your manual transmission wrx before they stop making them.. most country safety standards are autonomous braking by 23/24. Subaru don’t have this available (and eyesight) on manual transmission. With focus on EV cars surely Subaru wont spend $$ to develop this for manual transmission.. I think they will be gone by 2024.. but your manual wrx now and then tune it for the boost it deserves ..

    The yaris is meant to be an attempt to recapture the spirit of the light weight kp starlets of the 80's. Altho the car is grossly overweight compared to its P series predecessors, Toyota did manage to recapture that driving spirit and balance. Something which modern cars have long since lost. The engine does make a fair amount of hp for its size but the smaller block allows the car to be agile and when it comes to a tight mountain pass id prefer the yaris. Although the wrx's torque curve would make it a very fun car to drive on an open flowing gravel road or hill climb.

      I mean a 2010 4 door Yaris weighs 200kg less than a GR, but every current car is basically a full class size heavier they used to be a decade or two ago, safety regs and tech does that unfortunately - I know I'd have a deposit down on a true 1T compact with running gear like a GR if such a thing existed.

I don't care how good and fast the 140 lb boxer is. he won't stand a chance against a heavyweight (Tyson. Ali. Foreman etc). Of course if Yaris (140 lb boxer) loses to WRX (205 lbs boxer) then it is not surprising. The fact that it makes slightly less power despite having 47% less displacement, that shows how good it is. Toyota / Lexus cars always top reliability ranking.
