  • / loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... Today's demo is for these gorgeous loose sweet peas, using the wet in wet technique to create a lovely delicate under painting for the sweet peas, an unpredictable and very exciting method for painting loose flowers. Why not give it a try, and use any colours you like, I used opera rose, ultramarine, violet and sap green.I detail the brushes I use as I paint, but please don't feel that you need to use the same ones, use any similar brushes you are comfortable with. My board is at an angle of about 45 degrees tilt.
My paper is 100% cotton Saunders Waterford hot pressed, 11" x 15"/28cm x 38cm. Thanks for watching, and happy painting!

I too love flowers and find them challenging, and, yes!....need to get some accurate shapes first. This is helpful. (Your landscape lessons are confirmed as the best for me.) Sarah in Sedona, Arizona

When I was 5, my parents moved to the house next to my grandparents. (Every kids dream eh!) And separating our gardens was the flimsy trellis fence, and every year without fail, granddad grew sweet peas. Time and again they were the talk of the neighborhood, because, somehow the blossoms were so pretty, and far more than anyone else's. All colours lit the gardens up beautifully. It was the primrose yellow ones that always seem to end up in my mum's best vase. In our flowerbed, mum would grow a selection of dahlias. All the popular colours of the 70s, and some of these were huge. The blooms were half as big again as grapefruits. In the middle of that flowerbed, there was a bird table. I simply couldn't get food on it. The vegetation was to thick for a slight lad to get through. Good old dad was on hand to feed our birds. And your painting loosed up these locked away memories. Morgaine has been helpful in that area too. Mainly with her bird paintings. I had a passion for birds for a long time. You see, I lost a vast amount of my memories when I got severe brain damage in 2011, and since then my past has been coming back in bits and bobs. Always triggered by my senses, sights, sounds, smells, and so on. There are still big gaps. That frustrates my family. (Dad, do you remember this and that, and we fell about laughing?..... Nope.)
They get upset with me sometimes.
Never mind, it is what it is, and the bottom line I'd, I still draw breath.
Here we go again look. Yak, yak, yak. You wouldn't think I have family around would you....lol
Anyway, thank you Lois. Several painters from here and abroad unwittingly contribute toward giving me my past back. And it's great.
    TTFN.

Hello Graham, your comment reminded me of my childhood in the 1960's where I was fortunate to grow up next to my grandparents. My Grandpa also used to have a huge wall of sweet peas; his 'secret' was to dig a trench and he'd put anything absorbent in the bottom like old carpet (not rubber backed obv!), old knitwear (all woollen in them thar days) and newspaper. This base would hold water/moisture as they are very thirsty. I remember how a vase of them could fill a whole room their lovely, sweet scent.
It is magical how our senses can trigger memories...powerful. Wishing you the best.

I am enjoying your flower tutorials. I loved watching how the flowers started off with “the shape that makes them unique“ and became recognizable quite easily in your beautiful loose style. I’m looking forward to more flower tutorials. Thank you.🙏💙🌵

Lois, I'm under instruction with Trevor Waugh. He uses hi white SW, CP. I like the idea of trying HP and will do so. Your method of explaining is very helpful. The amount of talking is just about right. Nice pace Not all videos like this on YT are as easy to follow. Nice work.

Why is spattering in paintings used so much these days , on greeting cards too

    • @susanhoward5479

I think it distracts , nothing dreamy about splatters. But love the flowers.

As with erverything creative, its simply a matter of personal taste, I like it, if you don't like it, it is very simple, don't spatter! Or even better, pass over tutorials where you can see evidence of spattering ;-)
