Made pasteles for the first time ever and used your video as my guide. NOW my family refuses to buy them anywhere else!!!! I have made a new tradition with my children, bringing back my Puerto Rican heritage. Thank you so much!!!!!
my grandmother and mom would set up an assembly line and we would sip on coquito and listen to salsa and be making pasteles right about now... they passes away with their recipe but I remember how to make them...this will be my first time attempting them on my own without my families help, glad I came across your video... God bless you mamita
Love how you explained all the necessary steps to making pasteles, one of the most difficult dish to make. You’ve given me the confidence to give it a try. Growing up we only had pasteles on Christmas Eve, because of all the work that went into making them. It was sort of our Christmas gift from grandma. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Omg Evelyn, I'am married to an Puerto Rican, boy will he be surprise when I make this for him at Christmas, You made every thing look so easy. Wish me Luck!!!!!!!!
That was a fabulous video! Very detailed and just right. My husband's family are from Fajado/Vieques, and I grew up in Trinidad & Tobago, and our pastelles are very different. We use cornmeal and minced beef and pork. I want to surprise him this year with some of the pastelles that he grew up with, so this was wonderful! Wish me luck, and thank you.
luvtodance2 I’m black and grew up eating pasteles because I have Puerto Rican family members and I love them. My boyfriend is from Trinidad 🇹🇹 and he told me about the ones he grew up on. I am eager to try them! They sound delicious too!
I am so excited to make these for my esposo. I prepare the meat last night and take it out now to fry it. Thanks to my suegra for showing me this video!

Thank you so much! Your video is easy to follow. I have been ordering these at Christmas or buying from the restaurant for many years .I have always wanted to learn how to make my own.
Bendiciones mil. Feeling accomplished! ;-)

Thank you so much your amazing recipe!!! I made these last night and they were DELICIOSO!!! I knew they were going to be a huge success once I tasted the bay leave, Jamon spice mixture!!! You've got me tuned in!!! God Bless ☺
Thanks for this recipe. I love these but my mother in law died several years ago and I haven't had them since . My husband was spanish and we made them once but I didn't remember how. My husband also passed away . My son asked me to make them and I looked for the recipe online and found yours , thanks again , I will try these.
you are one of the best at making Pasteles that I've seen. . I must try one day to make them again. I used to make them with my girlfriend but we made 200 to 300 at a time for Thanksgiving.& Christmas and our families. I have a recipes that her mother use to use. Thanks
Beautiful! Just like how my bis abuela made them. :) I've eaten a ton growing up, but never really made them myself. My mother would love this as she used to help make this with abuela. ¡Muchisimas gracias!
I have to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas (en un hospital) but it will be good, because I will bring food you taught me to cook. Thank you! And I love listening to you speak: your English sounds like music.
This is the first time I have seen a video of where you make the process of making pasteles look so easy. I have seen a number of videos of making pasteles on RUclips and this is the first time it looked relatively easy. I think I finally will muster the courage to make this because my mother and abuela are both passed on and I miss their pasteles.
In addition to the garbanzo beans, I also add pimiento marron and raisins to the masa. That is how my Abuela made them. I like the way you seasoned the pernil. Great job👍👍
Por fin!!!, Thank you soooo much for showing me how to make pasteles. It doesn't look hard at all. Definitely making this next month. So glad I'm subscribe to you. muchisimas gracias 😊😊😊
I tried your recipe new years eve and they came out delicious. my family loved them. im making them again tomorrow, but im gonna double the recipe, they were gone too fast. lol. thank you!!
oh my god im so happy I found you with this recipe I was never taught how to make them and everyone that made them are now gone si I will be majing this for now on I LOVE PASTELS.
THANK YOU for making this video! My ex-fiancé was Puerto Rican, and his mother made these and sold them... but I never had the chance to actually see her make them, as she lived a few hours away. I’ve found several recipes online that sound like hers, but it really makes a difference to actually see an experienced hand make them before trying it myself. Now that you’ve shown me how, this white girl is feeling a lot more confident about giving it a try, LOL!
Thank you/gracias. Achiote/Annatto Hilo/twine The banana or plantain leave you toast it for 2 or 3 seconds in top of the stove for flavor. Then clean it with a wet towel. 👍⚘
Mm Mm Mm u do the easy way...so very nice..thank U! Please clarify, are these the same banana's that u fry when green or yellow.. or are u using a different type of green banana? My store sells single large green ones that turn yellow...or a smaller green banana sold in a bunch...which of these green ones are u using here?
Why do you prefer using the grater instead of the veggi processor to do the (masa)? Does it makes the Pastel taste better? I' m Puertorican, when I was little I used to help my Mom make pasteles for Christmas. But I never tried to do them myself. I order them with my meal when I go to PRican Restauransts. Although my husband is a gringo, he loves pasteles. And now my daughter's Scottish boyfriend loves the Pasteles also, and wants me to teach him how to do Puertorican pasteles. Would you mind coming over and teach us how? I guess that's not going to happen. But instead I am going to watch your video. I will let you know how things go...Never heard of a Scottish person, born in Scotland who eats Puetorican pasteles. My husband is of German Ancestry. It's like the United Nations in my home. Love your video, You make it look easy.
Maria Heydenburg that's the traditional way of making pasteles, that's how people usually make it but the food processor is easier and quicker. I'd prefer to use the food processor
Hola Evelyn me encantan tus recetas, crees que puedas enseñar cómo se hace la massa para las barquillas rellenas de carne molida, esas que dan a veces én las fiestas. Gracias. Éxito.
Donde está la receta? Me facina tu canal. Estoy obsesionada.
hi! great video! I definitely want to try it but I do have a stupid question.. after you tie them up in a string, you boil it ? for how long? once it's done boiling is it ready to eat? or do you have to wait? what if I boiled 3 and only ate 2. can I freeze the leftover one?
She says 45min to an hour in the video. Once it's boiled you cut the string and remove the paper and leaf and it's ready to eat. I wouldn't freeze one that has been cooked but it could probably stay in the fridge for a day or two of you put it in Tupperware.
Actually that’s awesome questions. I know this was asked years ago so I’m sure you got your answers. But for others who may have the same question as you I may have some answers that you may or may not take into consideration. To be honest with you, I don’t tie up my pasteles. I just use heavy duty foil and wrap it nice and tight. I boil my pastele for almost an hour. To see if ready, check by opening a pastele, if it’s stuck stuck to your foil or banana leaves OR if your masa is still soft and sticky, boil until otherwise. The comment above answers the question about leftovers. I hope this comment helps someone but if not then lol that’s okay I just hope you all enjoy your pasteles lol
Do you wait for the water to start boiling then add the pastele or just put a pan with water, add the pastele and once it starts to boil set timer for 45 minutes to an hour?
How long do you boil the pasteles at the end after you finish stringing them? It wasn't mentioned in the video. This was such a great video! Very detailed! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I definitely cannot wait to try it. I'll let you know how they turn out when I try them :)
Could this also be the same recipe for pastelillos(I understand this has to be fried, not boiled), or are there different ingredients/preparation methods to be used?
I would like to make vegetarian pasteles. What do you suggest to put inside in addition to garbanzos? How do I spice them? Do I still pre-cook? Thank you in advance.
Huge advice!! Absolutely use ONLY green bananas!! My daughter learned the hard way. She wanted to make A LOT of pasteles so she used a handful of slightly yellow bananas. I warned her “your bananas NEED TO BE green! no in between, no ‘just a little bit of yellow’ you only use green bananas or else it’ll mess up the flavor of the masa. Your masa will be a sickly sweet flavor.” Long story short, she didn’t listen, she mixed the ripe-ish bananas with the green - and when it was done cooking - one taste and GAG!! we had to throw away all of the pasteles !! Nothing is worst than eating SWEET pasteles! gag - I can’t tell you how horrible that flavor of sweetness is. 🤦🏽♀️ 😂 #Live&&Learn
Hi my name is Jolanda and im going to try and make about 100 pasteles, my question to u is how much of everything do i need to make the massa? Thank u so much hope to hear from u soon have a blessed day.
