I made this for my family. My mom and step dad are from Puerto Rico. They were blown away and couldn't believe I made them. They said I've earned my boriqua card. I even made some vegan for my sister. Thank you so much for teaching me. I'm making them again this year and every year.

@@moss.and.hemlocke I cook green canned Jack fruit but I season it like I would the pork. With sofrito, sazon, adobo, better than bouillon no chicken base, onions and garlic, black pepper, oregano and bay leaves. I make hers first to avoid cross contamination. My MIL is Puerto Rican and she introduced me to so much authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I remember the first time that I saw a pastele and I was like, “unh unh, I don’t think so.” But when I put this in my mouth a spectacular explosion occurred. I have been in love with these since the early 90’s when my daughter was born. There is nothing on the planet like these. I miss them and seeing this makes me want them even more. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. I hope that the Island and the people are recovering since the hurricanes. Much love I have for the Puerto RIcan people many times over. Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans will always have a special place in my heart forever!

I recall my first time with my mother-in-law and abuelo... awww I was 16 years old.. (yes married young and to this still with the man who compliments my life and fathered my children - OLD SCHOOL HERE)... but wow.. was that a traditional moment to recall - that I still hold dear to me and plan on giving to my grands today! and YEEEESSS. PLEASE DONT ADD RAISINS.. (yuuuuck) - You are awesome.. I've noticed you dont have recent vids.. so sad, I do hope you're still cooking with love.

My grandmother made a few variations of pasteles; de masa, de yuca, de arroz, y de repollo. The cabbage ones were my favorite. Back then those were the only one I would eat and after she passed away, I didn’t eat them for years. Now I want to make a batch and this video was very helpful. Thanks Ida for all the great videos on how to make delicious Puerto Rican dishes.

My grandma is half Hawaiian half Puerto Rican. Her parents passed when she was a child so she was raised by Puerto Ricans here on Maui. She learned to cook Puerto Rican food. Every time she would cook pasteles, gandule rice and paladesias she would invite the whole family to come eat. Still today I love her pasteles.

Oh my goodness, you literally made me cry! Talking about "la tradición", the tradition of preparing something passed down from generation to generation, and obviously the holidays and holidays past..... Brings back so many memories! If I could thumbs this video up 1000 times I would! I adore your videos, and your personality so much! FYI, you also cracked me up when you mentioned people putting raisins in their pasteles and you were like "PLEASE DON'T!" Hahahaha!!!😂 I never understood raisins in pasteles, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?! Lol Your pasteles looked delicious! And just the right size too!! Never liked those ginormous pasteles and all you bite into is a big hunk of masa!😝😝 😂 AWESOME VIDEO! And your coquito video😍😍😍 loved it, and even shared the link with my dad since he's the coquito maker and distributor for the holidays! Told him to try the new flavor too!!! Thanks for your hard work on these videos that you make look so effortless! 😘⭕️❌

Thanks for making this video and your other ones!! My great grandma passed away a few years ago and it was tradition to make it with the family. She was the glue to our family and after she passed, they stopped doing the tradition. I ask my mom for one every year but she never remembers to save me one 😑. So now I must take matters into my own hands and teach my family how to make them. Thank you!
