Yea, no one saw that coming. It rotted from the inside out like every country that's done the communism/socialism experiment yet it's 'vogue' among our young generation that's completely forgotten about the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc.
Except replace “Soviet” with “Russian” and the audio could easily be from a MOD video made in 2020. The shift back to Europe after the sidetracks to the Middle East is significant. Look at MOD deployments across places such as the nordics, Poland, and Lithuania to name a few.
@@tomservo5347 the USSR should have copied China and offered cheap labor and industry to foreign nations. If Gorbachev had never taken over it may have been different as well.
All for delivery in 1985, 😂 first thing we saw was the SA80, didn't work well and not till.about 87, the rest 89/90. Did test the Milan on 432s in 86 though, all of it was too late and crap, as usual supplied by the cheapest tender
I came out in 83 so missed out on all the updated equipment.........LOL....Never got to find out for myself the failings of the SA80 when it first was issued but have heard lots of reports on the groups on facebook about how crap it was and the age old debate on which is better SA80 or SLR........I only ever handled an SLR when I was on basic as I qualified as a combat driver so my personal weapon became the SMG gat gun commonly known as spray and pray stormtrooper special........lol
My first thought about the SA80 was that if a "forward assist" was required then there must be an inherent fault. Second thought was that it was well balanced, comfortable and accurate. Third thought was that it was a good design buggered up by poor, and probably cheap, manufacturing. I later discovered that it was buggered up by politics and interference.
Viewing this in 2023, any soldier complains of their kit being shit, should have been around in the 80s /90s….boots that fell apart and clothing that was gash…bought most of my own kit…
The bloke narrating should have gone into business making audio tapes for insomniacs. They used to show these films for classroom lessons - never failed to send us to sleep. Ex Lionheart was in 1984. Those blokes with the SA80 were faking the recoil - or were quite feeble. If they weren't faking it, they'd have probably fallen over firing the SLR. "LAW80" They renamed it LAW90 by the time it came out. Couldn't totally replace 66mm LAW. Noticed that the men running with Milan were Airborne. Too right, get men who make it look easy to carry! "Man portable", it was a thorough misery to have to carry any proper distance. MIRA hung around the neck, firing post had to be carried over the shoulder. Over miles, it was ridiculous. Airborne units always have a shortage of vehicles so we would sometimes have to tab MILES with that kit. Hated it, though it was effective. MIRA was particularly good, beat the starlight scopes that we were still using in those days.
Blimey! I'd forgotten about starlight! Just about to get a shot off and the battery would run out! I seem to remember the bloody things squeaked from power-up to battery-fail some 5 minutes later! 😁

A crystal ball wasn’t needed to see that threats would come from all over the Globe. I served from 1974 to 1993. I did a stint at Sandhurst in 1993 as DS and then attended lectures about global threats.
The SA80 was reliable, once Heckler and Koch had fixed it (a big job). They binned the LSW, and rightly so. The real pity was that the Army chose the SLR over the EM2, as the latter was both superior and more advanced. (Like the TSR 2.)
Hello buddy how's it going. Long time no hear. Hope you're well an still makeing about dpm gear an so on. Looking forward to seeing your next video soon. ATB Andy 🇬🇧 👍 ☕
They plan for the next century and then show a map with the USSR, Czechoslovakia and a partitioned Germany. None of that exists anymore but I guess they wouldn't have been able to predict that.
Sooooo, you didn,t know your weapon handling drills, you didn,t clean and maintain it sufficiently and you were a crap shot. Sorry......yes to the above, that is all....out.
Interesting film. In the 1980s NATO forces were focused on defending & defeating Soviet forces who emphasized mechanized warfare in Europe. However, the reality turned out that Western forces ended up facing more conflicts involving insurgencies, terrorism & guerrilla warfare. It required a retraining of men & officers to face the conflicts of the 21st century.
In the 1980s, insurgencies, terrorism and guerilla warfare is all the British army had ever fought since the end of WW2 (Korea and Falklands being the only exceptions).
Lol, ""Our defence requirements won't change into the next century". 4 years later the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist😁

The SA80 was a good idea hampered by some terrible design & production issues. Only since the A3 is it a really good rifle.
Unless you're left handed that is!

If they were going down 556 road the Canadian demaco based on m16 design would have been the better option .

Glad a vital section on new drill movements was added at the end, I bet the Sov's shat themselves at that bit.

Yes Lulworth. The only comfy range ever. Sought of nice to be there and i lived nearby.
Should have seen the kit we had in 70s . Left overs from ww2.
chain gun on the warrior was gash...always gave us spring loaded gpmg link which jammed it constantly

I always love it when they say “Man Portable” Yeah, right. Obviously designated by someone who has never stepped out of the design office 😂
We ad proper 7.62 mens bullets back in the 70s and eighties, not pussy 5.56 girly ammo 🇬🇧😐
Boy.... Were they way out
“The SA80 is reliable”. Right there you know the whole video is a lie.
H2X2E2532 the early versions yeah, L85A2’s and later on we’re doing pretty good compared to designs of its era
Gabriel Remot The Canadian C7 is a rifle designed and built around the same era, but we’ve gotten it right since day 1.
H2x2e2532 lol you mean the U.S M16 copy? Haha
jimbotheassclown Funny how UK special forces would rather use the Canadian “copy”
