  • What was planned to maintain our defence in the late 80's, surely it mostly happened?

      Yea, no one saw that coming. It rotted from the inside out like every country that's done the communism/socialism experiment yet it's 'vogue' among our young generation that's completely forgotten about the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc.

      Except replace “Soviet” with “Russian” and the audio could easily be from a MOD video made in 2020. The shift back to Europe after the sidetracks to the Middle East is significant. Look at MOD deployments across places such as the nordics, Poland, and Lithuania to name a few.

      The SA80 was reliable, once Heckler and Koch had fixed it (a big job). They binned the LSW, and rightly so. The real pity was that the Army chose the SLR over the EM2, as the latter was both superior and more advanced. (Like the TSR 2.)

      My first thought about the SA80 was that if a "forward assist" was required then there must be an inherent fault. Second thought was that it was well balanced, comfortable and accurate. Third thought was that it was a good design buggered up by poor, and probably cheap, manufacturing.
      I later discovered that it was buggered up by politics and interference.

    The bloke narrating should have gone into business making audio tapes for insomniacs. They used to show these films for classroom lessons - never failed to send us to sleep.
    Ex Lionheart was in 1984.
    Those blokes with the SA80 were faking the recoil - or were quite feeble. If they weren't faking it, they'd have probably fallen over firing the SLR.
    "LAW80"
    They renamed it LAW90 by the time it came out. Couldn't totally replace 66mm LAW.
    Noticed that the men running with Milan were Airborne. Too right, get men who make it look easy to carry! "Man portable", it was a thorough misery to have to carry any proper distance. MIRA hung around the neck, firing post had to be carried over the shoulder. Over miles, it was ridiculous. Airborne units always have a shortage of vehicles so we would sometimes have to tab MILES with that kit. Hated it, though it was effective. MIRA was particularly good, beat the starlight scopes that we were still using in those days.

    Interesting film. In the 1980s NATO forces were focused on defending & defeating Soviet forces who emphasized mechanized warfare in Europe. However, the reality turned out that Western forces ended up facing more conflicts involving insurgencies, terrorism & guerrilla warfare. It required a retraining of men & officers to face the conflicts of the 21st century.

    • @HO-bndk
      @HO-bndk 3 года назад +3

      In the 1980s, insurgencies, terrorism and guerilla warfare is all the British army had ever fought since the end of WW2 (Korea and Falklands being the only exceptions).
