I was born in Herford, Germany. Grew up next to barracks of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment in the 1970s. All the busy action going on there was fascinating for the 5 to 10 year old boy I was, and my experiences with the Britons were positive then and continued to be later, when I did serve in HQ NORTHAG and HQ ARRC in the early 90s in an british-dominated military environment.

They (US) did a airdrop. However they dropped behind British lines, but in front of a reserve hide, our squadron was credited with the kill and the exercise had to be reset.

In 1983 /4 I joined the Purdown cadets. Lt Lewis was in charge. Segt Cynthia , can’t remember her last name. Other people also Sue, Friday but along time ago. Had a look on google but it doesn’t exist anymore 😢 Back then it was just A,B,C and D company. We were B. We also had a band , in speedwell. I played the lyre and bugle. It was a great time!!! Very glad it’s all still going.

I was on this very exercise with 72 Sqn (RAF) although it was Spearpoint/Crusader 80. Started just as the video, BA TriStar from Heathrow into Gutersloh and then deployment into the field for 2 weeks, no idea where though. 72 split into 3 flights, A,B & C each comprising 4 Wessex and supporting teams. Drove a LWB Landie back home as part of a lengthy convoy via Zeebrugge. Would do it again tomorrow if i could!

B Company had a tough battle and the casualties were some of the heaviest for the UK. Interesting comment about should have used house clearing tactics. Hope that insight was quickly passed around the brigades for the battles to come. Doesn't really matters that they were facing conscripts. They were all conscripts and they were in very well prepared position with machine guns. And the Paras were as young as 17. They did a very difficult job with professionalism.

Psychological trauma sets in during sleep after such an experience. To shed it, it is essential to have a long, thorough shake, physically - you'll find details in Peter Levine, Waking the Tiger. We now know how to shed the reflex reaction causing PTSD if that doesn't happen, we don't know how to shed the trigger, though. Personally, I passed out top of the 1978 TAVR Platoon Commanders Course at the School of Infantry, so I'm very sympathetic to the views of the fog of war reported. I'd actually been attached to the Battalion at Osnabrook for a couple of weeks just beforehand, arriving during the bare-arms stand-to, and was privileged to be allowed to shed my crap-hat during the border patrol which followed - someone must have liked our style in dumping our civvies in the Mess hallway and joining you lads, from our side, if the Russians are coming, what better company to ride to Valhalla alongside? Technically, casevac management was part of the Platoon Sergeant's job, alongside replenishing ammunition, feeding and watering, and general management of the Toms - the Boss is involved in getting the next attack planned. At a higher level (I ended up a civvy filling a Staff Colonel slot on the WEU Crisis Management team for 20 years) you will get priority treatment asap - which means once the objective has been reached. Here, the section was hopefully 2 subsections, 8 riflemen and a 3-man Gun Group, the rifles in 2x 4-man groups, each of 2 2-man buddy teams as described. It was impossible to stop the covering rifleman going to help his buddy, so covering them was the duty of the other 2-man team. Yes, that's a third of your section gone instantly, but that phase of the battle is generally quite short - the hours mentioned was a product of the extra onus of a far larger battle than expected. Personally, I'd probably have used POWs to do the humping, under the vengeful eye of the casualty's buddy.

What a waste of time and money. Just find a wood park up go to sleep 💤 read books drink German beer and then wait for something to happen, that never did. I can just imagine them deciding on a name. Over a few after lunch brandies in the mess. Oh , I say old chap what shall we call this one? How about Run Jerry run Jerry run run run ? No no can't use that . They are on our side now, Red Rushing Russian is a good one. Or I know Rocking Horse . Oh old chap love the Rocking horse one , reminds me of my nurse . We can use that at a later date. Crusader 💕 followed by Lion heart. The name Lion heart will be blood curdling for them. Wow yes those names are so powerful, enough to frighten the shit out of the USSR, that's as long as the Beatles don't fuck things up again. At least it will at same time secure our jobs by bullshiting the rest of the world, the last thing we want is to lose our free cigarette ration free petrol tax free cars tax free Alcohol travel allowance that is easy to fake .double wages for being so far away from home 6 weeks leave per year 9 to 4 daily work routine plus 2 hour lunch break. And jolly good piss ups in the mess.

Absolutely speechless and in awe the whole way through this. I usually pause stuff to research a place, date, event etc. but in these guys manner of speaking it's all laid on. Jack Higgins described Paratroopers of all countries as having 'a kind of arrogant self-sufficiency' and you certainly get that impression from these men. Simply the best soldiers in the world. Any Ex Paras reading this, I hope you are safe, as secure and happy as you can be and I wish you long years.

My first thought about the SA80 was that if a "forward assist" was required then there must be an inherent fault. Second thought was that it was well balanced, comfortable and accurate. Third thought was that it was a good design buggered up by poor, and probably cheap, manufacturing. I later discovered that it was buggered up by politics and interference.
