This week on Zero Punctuation, Yahtzee reviewed Scorn - www.escapistmagazine.com/scorn-zero-punctuation/ - Watch it early on RUclips and support our content via Patreon or RUclips Memberships for $2/month. www.patreon.com/the_escapist
Its been a little over 8 Years and some months since the Zero Punctuation started and I would watch it every time i get a chance you make a video on it. Back then I was watching from a Gaming magazine so I had to wait for it every month to come out since internet was easy to get as it is now. Hmm. Might be longer now since Zero Punctuation started. I will have to go back and look at all my discs now.
@@karasguardian Yahtzee is probably older than queen elizabeths dead corpse!
@@alex.g7317 I would like you to think carefully now with what you just said...
@@karasguardian 🤔
@@alex.g7317 you can do it. I believe in you. Just try a bit harder.
Apparently there's an option to turn the sprites off and just see the 3D models. Internally they actually are using 3D models and just render them as sprites at runtime.
yeah that does make more sense.
The alternative was quite insane lol
I like playing with the 3D models cause it remindes me of a shitty early 2000s shooter
Yeah and they look like shit lmao
As shown in the post-zp stream! Highly recommended, if nothing else for even more jokes about what the title sounds like
AFAIK the characters are actually fully 3D and they use clever off-screen rendering and shaders to make it look like 2D sprites. I remember a tweet of theirs where they show how they can switch between true 3D and fake 2D. It's all very meta.
They place a filter in front of them
It's not just a developer tool, there's an actual in-game option to toggle the 2D-ification filter off or on you can use at any time! Seeing the raw models kinda ruins the illusion and artstyle but if you liked Quake more than Doom I guess it's nice to have the option.
Yeah, Yahtz ended up getting it backwards. It's a bit funny that his guess at how it works is the way more extreme workload of "they drew a million sprites" rather than the more sensible "it's 3D models with fancy rendering", it's strangely fitting for him.
I was gonna say. I just looked up gameplay videos, and those are absolutely 3D assets, probably just baked into specific frames of animation, so that it’s not 60fps or take any lighting from the environment
@August Enthoven I'm all for lightweight games (my pc is crap), but the game wasn't going to be as accessible anyway given the environment and effects. I don't thing this alternate shader actually changes that much, so really you'd have to redo most of the game, and possible either on a different engine or with way more custom ground-work.
ZP is over 15 years and every episode feels like it's his debut-it's always fresh.
Agreed. One of the all time YT goats
I mostly forget what he says about games so you can also re-watch old ones like the classic amnesia thought experiment.
This show started when I was regularly shitting my pants as a toddler! Good to see nothing's changed in either situation.
Minus a better mic, the change in aspect ratio and a different vocabulary
I've been podcast listening to his mega series and I can honestly say that he rarely, if ever, repeats himself in all 15 of the series, sarcastic criticism wise
This makes me think of a really, really good old-school death metal band. It's following an obvious template but does so much right that it's worth celebrating.
Is it the game or ZP your talking about? 😉
@@Sadarak1980 why not both?
Like Entrails, and Bloodbath.
And like the OSDM wave: good once in a while, but you really wish there were less of them and that more understood the original ones were rather experimental.
@@doctorwhouse3881 Of course, but also that the popularity of it means that odds of a really talented group participating in it is higher.
The enemies are not sprites. They are fully modeled and have intense filters applied to them to give them the appearance of DOOM-style sprites.
That's what I thought too. The game is definitely 3D and 2.5D
Yeah I figured their viewing angles were quantised and the rendering resolution lowered.
That's not entirely the case, rather they used their 3D models and then created hundreds of sprites depending on their state what angle you view them from, much like Doom 64's sprites are based off 3D models and then redrawn as sprites but that 3D element is happening in real-time for Prodeus. It's why there's still some weird spritey-ness where the angle and look can seem off at certain viewing points, but it is also why enemies still function perfectly with the true 3D models setting enabled.
Amazing how one phrase can invalidate an entire video.
Yea, he knows. You just missed his joke.
The level design is generally really cool across the main campaign, but some of the levels that the community has made are absolutely incredible. There was one featured in the recent "best of" campaign that had you get eaten by a giant worm and then fight your way through the inside of it.
Must be fans of Gears 2.
What’s the map called?
@@thedoomtestament4547 Biofortress? I could be wrong
This might sound really noobish but how do you actually make a ProNet account to access online features ? Steam won't let me make one and i cant find any website to actually sign up. I love this game and want more of it but its got so far the most opaque sign in process i've ever seen.
The map design was the only part of the game I liked. It was a painful, boring slog to play through.
It's more a spiritual successor to Painkiller rather than Doom.
Doom was good.
Painkiller was not good. At all.
Prodeus is not good. At all.
The fact that he thought 3D models that have been run through a ton of filters were all sprites just shows how well it was done.
I thought they were sprites myself until reading the comments.
Never ending boomer shooters is a subtle punishment for Civvie11 meant to erode his love for them as he's forced to speak of them for the rest of his sentence/life.
yeah
I like his other reviews too though
I wish he'd play more that he actually enjoys though instead of making vids on games he hates
It's a lot more interesting to me when he's interested in the game too
@@perryborn2777 I loved his video on Cruelty Squad where it changed from something he hates to something he sort of loves while still finding nauseating (the correct feeling).
@@perryborn2777 Don't worry. He's still posting Thief videos. He's happy...For now.....Until.......
@@perryborn2777 If you genuinely think Civvie is making videos on games he hates you and I have a very different understanding of an abstract alter ego on the internet.
I'm not saying that he hasn't done videos on games that made him uncomfortable. Basically 100% of Slavjank didn't make him happy, that is sure. And the one on Alien: Resurrection, oh boy. But I think his way of treating TNT and some other topics show that if he's hating a game he will end up not covering it.
@@JinFreeks Oh, I know that for the most part he plays games he likes, I was just more referring to the original commenter saying he's forced to play them until he loses his love for them
These days he seems to play mostly stuff that he likes, but back in the day he definitely played garbage he didn't like
And even now he plays some games that aren't that enjoyable, like that Dr. Radakai game
Okay. "Like a mad zoetrope artist in solitary confinement." is second only to "That metaphorical ship has sailed, circled the globe, and returned to port laden with exotic spice." for amazing turns of phrase from Yahtzee.
"My goodness, my glass house is sparkling delightfully in the morning sun, I think it's time to indulge in some projectile mineralogy."
What review is the ship metaphor from? This stuff is why I keep coming back to ZP
@@justsomeguy9230 I actually managed to find it by googling the quote, with "Zero Punctuation" tagged on to the end. It's at the very end of the Aliens: Colonial Marines review.
“Because navigating shooter games is like being an American Senator, You know you’re doing the right thing when you keep getting blockaded by cunts.”
One of my favorite ZP quotes ever.
My favourite quote is

Why is it that ZP has never lost its edge? Every episode feels just as quick-witted and perfectly paced as the first.
I was about to ask something similar. How has he both stayed the same and stayed for up to date all these years? Its a masterclass taught with dick jokes.

"How much scratching does this itch need" really sums up my feelings for this game. It's really good but feels too familiar. I'll probably just save it for later when I get a craving to shoot pixels again
Same can be said for 90% of the games industry, more CoD-like or BF-like games, or another generic souls-like game, or anothe overwatch, or LoL knockoff. The games industry lost its creative drive the moment companies decided to focus more on how much money everything will cost, and less on delivering a good quality product that will make a worthy return. Then again, what did you expect otherwise from an industry that is stuck on remaking things that were good, for a modern generation of gamers that are even too lazy to play video games because everything must have progression since few play for brainless fun to relax, but instead pretend to be pros that don't get paid for wasting time, pretending that gaming is a serious thing, and they aren't "playing" games.
Did you play it yet?
Well, with the mod tools front and center eventually SOMEONE will fix the enemy design.
If by "fixing" you mean "glue tits on everything", you're probably right.
Could you mean the fabled Someone, Retro Shooter modder of legend?
The first time i saw Parodius was in the game store on one of those try the system stations that were plugged to the TV. The older children laughed i had no idea what was happening at the time.
ZP is the Only series I keep up with without getting bored
He puts out 6 minutes of content every bloody week, of course you don't get bored.
I remember when I only found out about a new video from Digg, before it had this intro song!
Yeah the sprites are actually 3D models with some technology to make the 3D models look like 2D sprites.
I had to read an entire wikipedia article to understand that joke about the roman emperor Probus. You've tricked me into learning!
ROFL 😂 That closing bit had me laughing long after the credits finished rolling.
NICEly done!
I Kickstarted Prodeus and I'm really happy with how it came out. The guns are pretty satisfying and it has my favorite pistol in an FPS in years. It's always fun to try the new weapons but you never feel like you can't mainly stick to your favorites. I find the combat endlessly satisfying, in my personal opinion it's the best "Boomer Shooter" since Dusk.
The thing that truly buggers me in this game is the checkpoint system and I find it really odd that Yahtzee didn't mention anything about it. Still is a really good boomer shooter.
I remember Proteus! That's actually perhaps my top time pick for, "chill out and meditate in a video game".
What a chilling game right!
I've been trying to identify this game for a while now. It was the first indie game, to my memory, that really challenged the notion of what is expected from a game, and what price is the experience worth. It went a step further than Dear Esther and really got the conversation going (albeit stemming from a lot of rage).
Proteus is more like a movie than a video game. It's a 90 minute experience that you're mostly just watching, for $10. Our standards say that's a horrendous scam for a video game, but it's totally acceptable for a movie.
You really made a Double Dare reference in 2022. Outstanding Yahtzee
Great Stuff, as always!
"how psychotic lmao" is my new favorite zp line.
Holy shit. I remember watching ZP in high school, back in 2006. I had no idea he was still doing his thing.
Can't wait to hear his Scorn review.
I love Prodeus. The splashy, gratuitous bloodsplatter makes me feel like this is the kinda game that a movie or TV show would have a teenager play for two seconds in the background to show how "troubled" or "edgy" the character is lmao
I swear I thought I was the only one who thought this looked like the kind of game some edgelord kid would be playing in a TV show lmao. Like Mike Teevee in the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
That's so true. It's the Game Jimmy from GTA 5 plays through and through.
Ooh, I was hoping for a Polybius joke, got it right at the end there
5:42 Glad you didn't miss the opportunity to shoehorn Polybius onto that bit :)
That a Probus line is silly fun.
Wow, I wasn’t expecting a Double Dare reference. Now I’m imaging Mark Summers splattered with gore like he’s Patrick Bateman!
I love how the game gives me a feel of the stop motion claymation of the 90s like in og RoboCop
This is my favorite ZP in a while. Something about the tone, transitions, pace, and jokes. This one feels more positive and familiar. Really great episode.
"the way hemingway eclipsed a great big bucket of whiskey" absolutely killed me
I've never heard a better description for a senator 🤣🤣🤣
“Wait 3 seconds. How dead are you now?”
“Very”
“It was the second one.”😂
Yahtzee you always have the best words to illustrate glaring problems with game design.
"it was the second one" i died.
I think that a bucket of whiskey is commonly called a cask or possibly a barrel.
A quick Google search shows that you can in fact buy it that way.
Orange-ya glad you're in the chaos dimension was a good one
I'd say the color scheme definitely doesn't help enemy recognition, but one thing Prodeus manages to crib from the classic FPS handbook is that the silhouettes still give you enough info to work with. That grey blob is a most likely a zombie or an imp, that grey blob is lanky so it's an imp, that grey blob is thiccer than a bowl of oatmeal oh shit it's a chaingunner, if that floating red blob isn't smol then don't wave your pistol at it, etc.
The main cases this breaks down are for regular zeds vs shotgunners, and cacos vs pain elementals. Regular zed means you break out the fists and put on your best ATATATA impression, shotgunner means you should put the quad-barrel in their mouth before they try to return the favor. Meanwhile with cacos, you can take them out in a single rocket and I find that's the most reliable way to get rid of them, but pain elementals are more tanky. And while Prodeus cacodemons don't have any weird physics interactions with rockets like Doom cacos do (unless you count dropping out of the sky since they can't tank a rocket like a Doom caco can), Prodeus' pain elementals give you exactly the same reason not to use rockets against it that Doom's version does.
The fact Yahtzee didn't have anything to say about how responsive the weapons are to actual use indicates that either not having a proper graphics card has a MUCH bigger impact on input delay than I first thought, or else he's just so used to modern shooters being too busy showing off gun porn to remember that guns are supposed to kill things. My main complaint with Prodeus so far has been that it injects a ton of little things that stop your momentum dead in one way or another, and only some of it can be blamed on my PC being a bit north of the potato end of the spectrum. Dashing causes your momentum to hiccup in a very deliberate manner, trying to fire the SMGs and plasma rifle in controlled bursts is an exercise in futility because it has a noticeable input delay that completely CANCELS your attempt to fire if you lightly tap the fire key, the minigun has exactly the same godawful stupid design decision that every game minigun except Wolf 3D and Doom always makes, you can't reload without letting firing animations settle down a good bit, etc. Even the fists have a very weird version of this. Regular attacks are MISERABLY slow, unresponsive, and stilted, but holding down both fire keys ramps it up into a Fist of The North Star reference. I would be willing to tolerate a slower ATATATATA if I gained a less plodding basic punch in return.
this one was a banger. nice work.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to make the Prodeus-Parodius connection.
You can get buckets of whiskey in just about any cheap bar in Thailand. Though it is usually laced with triple strength red bull.
Your jokes are so good always. The graphic design rules. I still think I'm on my 10th episode every time. 9/10 let it be going for years more!
Okay, that ending gag got me! You win, Yahtzee.
The Roman public transport joke just undid. I don't even know why. Just totally cracked me up.
Sounds like a lot of effort into things that don't necessarily make sense, but so much effort that it's worth taking a look anyway. Like the two races of demons who hate each other thing, I can see some interesting maps being made from that. Wild Arms 3 had an interesting dungeon where the monsters being super strong was counterbalanced by their racial hatred for each other.
Now where's my spiritual successor to Hexen, damn it.
One of the game designers is a AAA level designer, and there's a built-in level designer. I think this is a game about level design!
Dude so eerie. I was legit just thinking about Polybius before I watched this video. There's like an hour long documentary about it on youtube, kinda spooky.
A good Yahtze review! Holy crap!
Wait, I thought Prodeus generates sprites on the fly from the 3D models, because, as Yahtz put it - making billion variants for each enemy would be mental.
F U C K I N G S T E L L A is the greatest thing I've seen all year
4:05 had to replay that part a couple of times to make sure yahts really said what I thought he said....
I looked up zoetrope and let out a sigh of relief
The delivery of the "fucking stellar" line was brilliant. I looked away, so rewound to see the animation to go along with it, and giggled like an idiot.
Something about it made me feel like everyone involved (whether that's just Yahtzee or a team) are enjoying ZP more recently, and that shows through.
That ending is absolutely fucking chef's kiss. Mwuah!
I have to admit, I’ve always had a soft spot for the photoshop lighting effect gun.
My gripe with prodeus is that the levels feel
too long
i think i would have prevered if the game had double the levels each with half the length
also maybe the option to use only ONE of the SMG`s instead of dual wield all the time

Wonder if Yahtzee has seen Ahoy's video on Polybius since he mentioned it in the end credits. That's where I learned about that supposed game, quite the fascinating watch.
I find the credits gags can be a bit hit-or-miss with ZP, but this one absolutely hit the nail on the head... 😹
I’ve waited years for him to mention Polybius
05:47 "IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO ORDER WHISKEY BY THE BUCKET?"
Yahtzee Croshaw asks a question that he definitely knows the answer to.
I can't wait to see you review SCORN...
Heh, Probus. Pro-Bus. I get it.
Ruby Ranger's review of this game sums it up pretty perfectly, I think.
Prodeus gives me the feeling Doom 2016 gave me that Eternal seems to be missing. I don't know what it is... but it gets me hard.
Double Dare. Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a while.
Interesting that the captions at the start don't line up with the voice. Running gag? Or toning down for YT?
00:26 [looks at avatar] Yes, I do indeed remember _Hey, Arnold!_ actually, but somehow this video made me really want a parody _Doom_ clone based around _The Room_ now.
Hey, has anyone mentioned that the enemies are 3-D models that are passed through a filter to look like 2-D sprites?
15 years and they still can’t get the volume right 😇
was wondering why you didnt mention Polybius only for you to mention it in the credits xD
I have not yet finished the game but I love it so far. The only main complaint I have about it is the nexus point system. I'm surprised Yahtzee didn't mention this. I guess he is ok with it.
I agree that the all monsters almost have the same color scheme. Sometimes I could not tell apart the shotgun guys from the zombies.
Some of the weapons also become less useful once you acquire bigger and better guns. I don't use the fists anymore since there are plenty of ammo. I don't use the pistol too because if the shredder. And the shotgun becomes obsolete when you get the auto shotgun.
ref whiskey bucket query: nothing stops you from ordering them separately and Ikea'ing them together
I now need a doom clone with Wiseau.
"You know how the 2-D sprites in Doom always looked like they were turning to face you because there wasn't a different sprite for every angle you could view them from"
Sorry to nitpick but that's a Wolfenstein 3D issue. Doom enemies did have sprites for viewing from different sides, I don't remember the exact number, 16 maybe? But it was enough to almost completely nix the issue of the sprite not reflecting the direction the mob was actually facing.
The juxtaposition of the chill patreon ad before the Zero Punctuation ain't a great complementary leas in.
It has 3D models too!! You can switch to them in the options!
I completely forgot this game existed. Like when it popped up in the recommendations I thought it was a new video until I saw the timestamp.
Can't help but feel that's how Hemingway would have described a super-shotgun blast, too.
This will probably be one of his top 5 games of the year, my guess #4
I was hoping this was going to be Scorn. Maybe next week.
We need a Parodius remake!
4:48 It's not an itch to scrach, it's a genre by now.
You're not asking when this "vr itch" is going to be scrached off, because it's not something you want to get rid of.
Honestly the models may actually be 3d. There's a relatively unknown trick I've seen where all the models (3d) were hidden off screen. Where a dedicated camera took an image without lighting and even drew the image to the game screen at a slightly lower frame rate so that it didn't look too smooth.
Really neat trick, but honestly I cannot remember what game did it
Im actually surprised that ZP didnt mention the fact that prodeus' attempt at catering to the high score hunters completely cripples the actual "game" element of the game. The checkpoint system in this game is one of the best reasons for why it will never be as fun as any of the other boomer shooters that managed to get acclaim.
When and what is your next audio book??
That comment about the US had me in stitches
I appreciate that his reviews never include the unnecessary “9/10” scores and he just reviews the game
Could the large front be an attempt to allow accessibility? If you are short sighted then large text is a godsend.
I figured the excessive gore effects of Prodeus were an essential part of the game design. Walking into a room drenched in blood lets me know I've been there before.
"Is it even possible to order whiskey by the bucket"
Pretty sure they sell buckets of alcohol at my local gas station. Not sure if it's whiskey though, as I only investigate them enough to make sure they're not buckets of fried chicken. That's what I usually expect to find inside buckets and, despite the idea of room-temperature-gas-station-fried-chicken being absolutely disgusting, I am always a little disappointed when my expectations are not met.
Yahtzee did a great job setting the expectation that he was going to really hate this by rattling on about how it was a Doom clone to start. Excellent setup to then subvert to a game he actually clearly enjoyed. Loved it.
Crunch those pixels! Crunch them!
1. It's a fully 3D game rendered as retro spirte.
2. Yes - it was made by an iconic Doom modder, both key devs come from working on some great fps games and D2 mods. They actually made it purposely to be a Doom2 inspired game as making console release of Doom mods is not possible - that's what sparked it.
While i have a mixed relationship with boomer shooters - Prodeus is on the good side, while it has some issues (like the weapon array and lack of a good way to quickly switch weapons on a controller) and i don't love the main shotgun spitre + gen some sounds. It's rather great and plays very well (great on steamdeck as well). I would say - next to Dusk and Ultrakill it's one of my fave.
To get the 360 pixel sprite look, they could've easily just made a full 3D model, and then ran a pixel filter over it in production, touched it up in a few places, and then programed it in. That, or it's just rendered in real time with a pixel filter as you're playing.
That's pretty much what they did, yeah, you can toggle it off and it's just 3d models
Yeah that's also how Dead Cells does it, even though that's a fully 2D game.
Prodeus is my favorite FPS on the Steam Deck, but if you turn on all the post processing effects, it turns the battery percentage into a seconds counter.
How much does a Hemming weigh?
