We had a little bit of a hay scare in New England. A few local farms that I’ve bought from in previous years, have sold all their hay out of state. Thankfully some local livestock families have gotten together to organize haying groups and take the pressure of some of the aging farmers. The goal is to build a stronger local farming community and source as much local support as possible. Looking pretty promising so far

This is another reason it’s so hard to watch hundreds of acres of beautiful, healthy farmland in South Carolina get turned into warehouses. These people (the people buying and the people selling) have no idea what they’re doing to the future of our food supply, or maybe they do and they just don’t care. You can’t do anything about it unless you have a million dollars, and what kind of young farmer has that laying around?

We had to feed a lot of supplement to get them through. This year was a complete turn around. It has rained and rained in most of the state. There is hay in abundance. We are now entering a hot dry spell but fortunately there is a lot of hay crop that was put up. The last time this happened, ranchers had to sell the cattle at cheap prices, sustaining heavy losses, and then when the weather corrected, there was such a shortage of cattle that the prices were incredibly high. The ranchers were hit the hardest both times, but when you can't get water to your cattle, and there's no hay to be found, you either sell or watch them die in the pasture.
I don't believe beef prices at groceries will be any cheaper, and when cattle prices go up, meat prices will soar even higher.

Nothing personal with the man or his farming style, but at our local farmers market I can’t stand there and look those people in the face during hard times and charge double or triple what the grocery stores are. Then again I live in a farming community 6 hours from anything resembling a metroplex. Just that his business advice is my only issue.

Consuming anything into our bodies that has suffered such an unforgivable death is bad spiritually for both animal and human. Our genetic makeup with the natural teeth we are given weren't designed and meant to be used for tearing into dead animal meat carcasses.......I don't care how much BBQ sauce and hickory apple smoke chips.....etc.....you think you are so pridefully cooking that animal.........it's all ritualistic bad omens being released into the ether.

Freezers are stocked for at least the next year :) Just looked up prices for round bales in Abilene area. $120/round but almost no one has any for sale. Only reason I have not bought a couple cows for the back 6 acres is that we have had 6" of rain so far this year. NOTHING is growing not even the weeds. We were getting slammed by dust storms before I pulled them out and took my babies back home to our own place. Millions of acres are ruined. I heard it's centered around Texas and New Mexico now. I'm a small time rancher and I truly feel sorry for those rancher's in Texas and other drought stricken areas. It's pretty sad to see hay producer's advertising cow hay for $250 to $350 a ton the past 3 or 4 year's and some ranches asking $60 to $80 a pair per month for a lease and then there's the Democratic party that is intentionally keeping the cost of everything high which is killing our working class. I understand everyone is in business to make a living but we're killing the cattle industry in a lot of area's by leaving a extremely small profit for the rancher and it's a shame. I sure hope America wakes up soon.

      Dear God,
I'm praying for rain, grass and an end to this nightmare for all envolved. God Bless the animals and the ones who care for them. Provide their needs as you said you would. Please provide the rain, the water the grass and the hay, watch over them all, both livestock and their owners. Give them knowledge to know what to do and where to go for help. Guide them and Give them wisdom to find the right resources they all need at this time. Let people unite, let them share and give where they and however they can. Even if it's grasslands or streams so their animals will survive.
GOD BLESS THE EARTH AND THOSE THAT NEED ITS RESOURCES. IN JESUS PRECIOUS NAME I PRAY, AMEN!!!

@@crystalbluebutterfly @Andrea Campbell Campbell so WHERE do YOU think WE came from huh??? I can assure you it wasn't for a "common ancestor of monkeys nor from monkeys"! BTW Modern Science came from Christians and people in Christian lands. Now the two groups that have won the most Noble Prizes in history are 1.Christians and 2. Jews. There is LOTS of science in the bible! It's said Isaac Newton wrote more about God than about science and Louis Pasteur was a devout Catholic! Also the main branches of modern science were laid down by Christians! However, evolution has not been proven yet people follow it blindly!
Once a Christian scientist who held close to 20 patents and had gotten recognition, he was asked what he thought about evolution, and he said that one can dig through the millions of years in the ground (which they have) and you won't find, not one species' transitional fossils showing the different stages of transformation... NONE and he's right! What they have is HUG GAPS between periods HUGE! And when they find a so-called "missing link" it turns out to be either a squirrel or a monkey or something else! Yet people STILL BELIEVE blindly in that nonsense! With that he DESTROYED evolution! And BTW this is something Communists teach people to brainwash them. The Soviets used to tell each other this is the belief our system is based on! And because they didn't believe in God, it's said per the Library of Congress that they killed over 100 million people! And these are old numbers! BTW even Darwin doubted his own theory and if you were to go by "appearances" you'd conclude after looking at a platypus that it's a mix between a beaver and a duck! Yet that's how these "scientists" are making judgments nowadays! BTW it's said the Smithsonian is disappearing lots of evidence that confirms the bible such as mummies and skeletons of giants. Because it's not in their best interest! Also lots of archaeological evidence is confirming the bible and if you dare read the prophecies you'll see WE'RE IN THE LAST DAYS! I'll give you some just to open your eyes! For once Daniel said he saw a vision and he was told in the last days knowledge shall increase! If you see what's happening now, over the last 100 years alone we've made advances like never before in human history! We've gone to the moon and back! We can perform surgery on a human and change organs and parts like nothing! We are able to fly, something that was considered impossible once, and on and on and on.. .there's literally hardly anything man can't do nowadays, and that's not even to count the development of AI! Another prophecy which Jesus said, because of the increase of evil, the love of many will grow cold! If you noticed people used to love each other a lot more back in the days! Even during the holidays people were more together such as family. Nowadays many people are cold hearted and distant from each other and people don't trust each other as much. Same with with people's love for God. which I'd say likely is linked to the other prophecy that there would be an Apostasy in the last days where people would leave the faith en-mass. More and more people are becoming Atheist nowadays and many church buildings are empty! This is supposed to happen prior to the Antichrist showing up (or false Christ) which of course will make his job so much easier - deceiving the people into take his mark -the mark of the beast, 666. It says people who don't take that mark won't be able to buy or sell! Now we have the technology for that! Through computers, it will be a lot easier to scan some kind of microchip which likely will be inserted or tattooed (both types of microchips already exist) onto a person's right hand OR forehead or so (read the prophecy) and God warns whoever takes the mark will be DOOMED! Now we also have digital currency but it's not governmental -yet but when they create the New World Order - a government world system (ever heard of the great reset?) they will likely implement it on a global scale!!! There's more but that's all I will tell you for now on that regard! Last but not least, many scientists who were supposed to be Atheist have become Christian once they realized (or at least started believing in a creator) once they saw how organized the universe is as opposed to chaotic and it even has math in it!!! So this is a reason many Atheist who are scientists have been converting!!! Also the DNA we have in our cells, it's a very complex program that tells each cell what to do! It's said a computer program can't write itself (of course unless people design such a program which still means it was people that programmed it). If you walk along the beach and you see a writing in the sand saying "James loves Mary" you KNOW it couldn't have been the random waves of the ocean that wrote that, but an intelligence or intelligent being, same with your DNA! It's a very complex and very large program that only an intelligent being could have written that! It could never have written itself! Even people that know about statistics and probabilities will tell you chance of such as thing happening mathematically is IMPOSSIBLE! These people are experts at knowing the odds such as of winning the lottery etc. There's LOTS more if you're interested Such as that the Ancient Chinese it was discovered through their writings that they believed in one God and their writings show they believed just about everything the bible teaches about creation. They even wrote down what happened during Jesus' birth (the events in the sky), when he died and resurrected! And what's astonishing is that they realized that a man had come down from heaven to die for people's sins! They realized it because they saw the double eclipse which is an event that's virtually impossible! They said Ying and Yang have mistakingly switched places! All the sins of the world have been put on one man, salvation is now opened to all humanity! The double eclipse that happened was the sun turned dark and the moon blood red - at the same time! (This is when Jesus died there was darkness over the land and Peter mentioned it on his first preaching to a large crowd, he mentioned the double eclipse which is in the book of the prophets!) When this happened the emperor vacated the throne room and stopped all military activity and official business for five days! This is ALL DOCUMENTED! People strongly suspect that only God could have revealed such information to them! Since they knew about creation which was written about by Moses, and how sin entered the world, it's quite possible they were also waiting for the savior!!! In another entry they said eclipse on the day of so and so... man from heaven died! Either way this is all for now! If you want to know more about the Ancient Chinese's beliefs let me know! Take care!

Anyone with cattle may remember the response after the drought of 2012. Cattle prices EXPLODED. The high prices caused so many to lose their mind... then lose their money. People went out and paid 2x what cows were worth to get into "the cattle business". When prices went back down they discovered the reality of the small cow calve business. What could be different this time? Well.... the rain forest is getting hacked up at a record pace to make more cattle pasture and the last time I checked , the US still had not allowed COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING to be put back on beef cattle. The bounce back may not be as extreme this time because of cheap imported beef. The world is starting to get concerned about the climate now.... and the mennonites are on the radar in mexico right now. They are hacking chunks off the rain forest the size of Dallas every year. People who are concerned about the climate and conservation are not totally crazy. People that are farming and ranching are not evil and they are ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. It is all starting to unwind now.... and getting sketchy. Shipping hay all over the country cost over 2x to make it happen now with fuel cost. We can be "regenerative" or "sustainable" all we want. However, in spite of what any expert may say... if you do not have rain there is no management strategy to save you.

The cost of hay made me remember an interview with Mark Shepherd, where he cut hay last time there was a drought in his area. But his farm stores a ton of water underground after years of permaculture and keyline design. Your land looks relatively flat, but would you ever consider making that type of investment to slow soak and sink water? It can remain in the soil for years.

My family lives in the Texas Hill Country we have been raising cattle as long as I can remember. My grandfather J David Bamberger was the first to have bred bovine and Buffalo in captivity, and by far this is the worst draught we have ever seen all the stock ponds are dry no creek's are flowing and the springs are drying up! We have to haul in water for all the animals not just the cattle. It's hard not to blame all the people moving out here from California and new York that for the first time ever are on a well and don't get charged per gallon of water, so they think it ok to have there sprinklers on all night just to have some green grass and a full pool in there 1 acre yard they call a ranch!!! I've never seen the Guadalupe river dry in my life! I'm so scared that it's just going to get worse. God help us all!!!

That's every Wednesday, three mile long lines of Navajo ranchers still at Holbrook, AZ. It's been like this for over 20 years. The grass on the Navajo is literally almost gone on the southwest portion of the Navajo Nation. 40 years ago, when I was about 4 years old, I got lost in the grass and bushes all the time cause they were so tall. 30 years ago, only ankle high. 20 years ago. Few bushes, everything dried.

Unfortunately, in Texas, you are NOT allowed to process the animal yourself to sell to the customer. You can sell the animal to the customer and even take the animal to the processor for the customer, but you cannot process the animal yourself. Another consideration, it would take a while to get the word out that you were willing to sell direct to locals, but by then...you've struggled to feed that animal and would suffer a great loss and risk to animal. Also, there aren't many people right now who could afford to buy the animal and pay processing costs. If all of this isn't enough, to get a processing date for beef in our area, it's THREE years out!!!
So, with the current situation, it's a lose-lose for farmers.

I don't know about your conclusions. There's about 5 states north north of you, that came out of a 2 year drought and are finally having a good year for hay and pasture. Their total cattle numbers dwarf Texas's so I would not expect beef prices to do anything. Sadly, locally cattle prices will hit rock bottom.

Good to hear you are aware of part of the story. Great number of feeders come off Texas pastures after weening and grass feed more months before feed lot. Depending on supply chain demand, the number of calves feed to either utility, choice or prime is determined of how long to give grain based diet. Only a small amount is sent to Texas feedlots because of heat and high humidity stress causing slow weight gains. More profit is made shipping to Central states such as Kansas where temps are historically lower with great amounts of ground water. The only area of significant feedlot is in a very dry dessert like conditions. This area is just north of Laredo Texas which is in deep south west Texas. Coastal area cattle are sent there along with the grain produced in higher rain fall areas. A very great percentage of butcher calves came from Texas. Braman and Thier cross breeding such as branas are more likely to stay in Texas for feeders. King Ranch is famous for this. Angus and black baldies can not handle heat nearly as well as the country of India heritage breeds. Of course black is the worst with heat obsorbtion. French heritage White Chalae do will in Texas heat. Dust neumonia and shipping fever are greatest cause of feedlot deaths.

    • @scottpoet
      @scottpoet 2 года назад

@@terryanderson4366 well my point was, which you have now just proven is that people from Texas some reason believe it is center of the universe. Did anyone down there give any thought to the 2 year drought in states like Wyoming, Montana, N Dakota, S Dakota, Nebraska... no? Suddenly you get one little drought and the whole world needs to pay attention.
"But you don't understand ranchers are losing everything down here?!?!"
WRONG! I perfectly understand, but you didn't care when ranchers in our states were losing everything.
Now back to her comment, that the Market will react to Texas's drought... there's always a drought somewhere in the world, and the big 4 are global companies. There will be a reaction, but don't expect a huge reaction unless Brazil and a few other places are having a drought too.

Because of the way your meet is processed the farmer and the consumer will always get stung. The big corporations in the slaughter houses can afford to hang on to "this surplus" and just dribble it out as needed so that the price remains consistently high. The other looser is the South American rain forest as because the American market for beef will expand that will mean more forest will be cut down to farm the beef. Of course the more forest that gets cut down the dryer the USA and the rest of the world will get, which in turn will make the export of South American beef even more cost effective and the whole darn thing is like a snake eating its own tail. Thanks for posting

I have been ranching over 45 years in South Central Missouri Ozarks. We haven't reached that point yet but we are in a severe drought most all my ponds are dry or almost. Any previously stressed hardwood tree is dying and the understory trees like dogwoods and persimmons are dying as well. Few tried bailing this year all I did was cut in fire brakes. The neighbor tried to bail 30 Acres and gave up bailing the rest of the fields. He had four very loosely packed bales.
It has been worse. On 1980 we went 5 months Without Rain.
If we don't get a significant amount of rain our sales Barn will likely be overrun as well. With all the grass Brown the ponds dry and no hay for winter.
This country is about to face difficult times as bad or worse than the dirty thirties. And we're about to face economic crisis far beyond the Great Depression.
If people don't realize there is such things as conspiracies and when someone finds it out the conspirators label it a theory. There is very little fertilizer that is part of the problem. First they blamed it on the shutdown you know the covid crap. then they blamed it on Russia. all right which is it. I'm just 7 miles from the major ammonia line that pumps the ammonia from Texas and Louisiana North for the cornfields. it's a big enough deal even where we live they send us a safety warning letter. the letter warns us we are in a danger zone and if there's a leak we would need to evacuate. Well guess what they shut production down in the fall of 2019. can you say pre-planned shortage.
then this year they sent a census out wanting to know every head of cattle we had, but we were also supposed to include chickens, pigs, beehives, how many fish were in our ponds. the list goes on only thing was they had to earn $1,000 or more in a year.
they are one signature away from federalizing all agricultural land. Want to bet they don't use it.
