    This was so much fun, we’ve done the same exact thing and struggled just like you did. We don’t have equipment to dig/move things but always look at a project like “this shouldn’t be too hard” and half way through say, what we’re we thinking.... thanks for showing even the hard stuff. Merry Christmas!🎄

    I made that mistake once. Saw a free japanese maple tree on craigslist, and thought "I can dig that up". Way more work than I had anticipated. Plus I had to put it in the ground as soon as I got it home. I don't believe I'll be doing that again. Still have the tree though, and it's a beautiful tree.

    This is the most fun I have had watching gardening videos. I do this sort of thing all the time. The tree ALWAYS wins!!!! You two did a good job.

    9:53 Leverage is key here. I always use a thick iron pipe, if it's long enough you can tip it down with one hand and the tree will pop out. Zero struggling involved... Except getting it in a wheelbarrow, but you can also use a tarp and drag it along.

    • @varrock4517
      @varrock4517 5 лет назад

      ah I see what you mean that's not a bad idea, maybe even use a rock bar if you don't have any piping?

    • @KidMillions
      @KidMillions 5 лет назад

      @@varrock4517 Anything that won't bend in the middle I guess ... A thin rock bar will probably dig into the clump in stead of lifting it, but you can put a piece of wood in between.

    This was priceless. We went through this exact process today including breaking a spade handle! So far the tree has won but tomorrow we will go back at it and probably get it the rest of the way out. Just as you said, the spot where it currently lives is way too sunny and it gets burned in the summer. We’re going to move it to where it gets more shade in the heat of the day.

    How do you know how much roots is enough for the tree to survive?

    • @KidMillions
      @KidMillions 5 лет назад +1

      The width of the branches is generally the distance of the roots in the ground... In practice the biggest clump you can physically handle, which is about wheelbarrow size.

    I think I would have took a hose to soak the ground first, also helps the tree to have moisture when replanted. Why did you plant it in the rocks the first time? Does cutting all those roots so close hurt the tree?

  • @bonsa1guy
    @bonsa1guy 5 лет назад

    Was it pressing to dig it this early? Best chance for continued vigour is late February at budswell. Try an Arakawa, much more sun resistant. A grafter spade would really help (as well as a fit lady with a pick).
