Another thing you can do to help size smaller trucks to a bigger board is to get wider wheels. Asymmetric wheels that are offset are the best, but they’re kind of hard to come by. The best example is the oj mini combo shape. Other than that there are a lot of old school wheels like the powell mini cubics and rat bones, but they’re usually 60mm and up.
Dude, I actually thought of that too! The only problem for me is that when I have wider wheels I find it harder to do tail slides because the riding surface of the wheel is bigger and grips to the ledge more so maybe i have to change to Independent trucks to make the wheels sit in from the base plate or try 101a wheels that are harder and won't grip to the ledge as much 🤔
Wheel with is one of the only things I haven’t been able to notice a difference with in skating. I know lots of dudes swear by skinny ones for bluntslides and tailslides, but I haven’t really noticed a difference. I usually go with wider ones because I think they look a little cooler. I also have thought that they might not flatspot as easy since you would have more surface area you would have to wear away. I can see them being sticker on slides though. I usually have stuff waxed up either way haha.
Yep, rn I ride a 9inch deck with 8.5 Indy mids, and the Andy Anderson Nano Cubics. They’re offset so basically feels like I have 8.75 trucks. Love this set up 🤙🏽
Nice video and solid skating. I did the same thing 3 years ago, I went up to a 9" from 8.5. To help with the weight difference I put 8.5 Tensor Mag lights on (30% lighter than industry average) and, same as you, I put 4 washers on each axle to help push the wheels out a little. Narrower trucks help flip tricks too as the physics of it flip the deck quicker.

Nah dude, I was all good! Just bashed my shin on the ledge lol Yeah dude, those trucks will be perfect if you use the washers on the inside of your wheels too 👌🏼
That was exactly the question I asked myself today, 8.5'' trucks on a 9'' deck? I recently bought a Jart Dirty Pool Before Death 9'' deck and still have almost new ACE AF1 55's lying around. In addition relatively wide wheels, Powell Peralta SSF G-Slides 56mm or optional Spitfire F4 Radial 58mm, so that with additional washers the nuts probably no longer fit completely on the threads. Guess it's time to find out if I can live with it...
Coming back to skateboarding and loving your content! Would love a video about truck sizes on egg boards as you’ve talked about them briefly on other videos but I’m getting confused as to what size to get for different egg boards! I want to try some different sizes but don’t know what size trucks to get 🤷♂️
Yeah dude of course that will work 👌🏼 the trucks will only sit in 1/4 inch on either side which won't be an issue at all. You can put extra washers on the inside of your wheels as well if you wanted to push your wheels out a bit more to be closer to the width of your board
151's have an 8.75" axle width so the trucks will sit out from the edge of your board very slightly which will be fine but I would just keep the 149's on since they. are 8.5" wide they will just barely sit on the inside of your deck and don't really need to push your wheels out further 👌🏼 If you do want to add washers on the inside of your wheels though I usually put as many on to where I can get my axle nut tightened down flush with the axle. Hopefully that helps man 🙏🏼
I'll have to try the spacer trick. I got a 8.75 AH blue meanie board which is a shaped board and my first pair of Ace Classics. Fit the trucks with the narrower back truck position and went with 44's but the wheels actually sit a little different than on Thunders so I'm having a bit of problems with that.
I definitely prefer to have the axle flush if possible, so any kind of primo stand won't 'snap to the floor' like a mousetrap the wrong direction should you ever land primo or purposefully try freestyle stuff. Thing is, one of my boards is the 9.13" version of the Andy Anderson 7-ply deck and I have 8.5" trucks with wider freestyle wheels on it. It's still flush with the deck that way too. Just like the washer trick. And unless you really want to have the most comfortable balance point in like 5050 grinds locked into one side (heel or toes), you probably won't really notice it much. With your setup I would say the direction the board would tip over from primo position is the correct direction and probably not something unmanageable. But I had setups were it would snap to the floor the board direction (from primo to flat on the ground) and stuff like that destroys my back. I definitely prefer a flush setup and stable primo, should it ever happen accidentally or purposefully. To be honest, I never understood why some people would go wider than their deck. Makes no sense to me.
Yeah due, that's very true! I'm not doing too many flip tricks these days though so that problem doesn't really bother me but I can see how that would be a big problem for people. Well Dan Corrigan rides wider trucks than his board so he can see where his axle not is from the top view which apparently helps him aim his trucks to lock into grinds more but that would just feel too weird to me lol
Not at all man, your trucks will just slightly be sitting in on each side. If anything it will help with flip tricks since your board will be able to roll over a little easier 👌🏼
I tried 8.5 independent trucks with 54mm wheels and a 8.75 board it was sooo hard to tre flip i think its because of the under sized trucks or the wheel base
I have some nice old grind king trucks, but it's the 5 size model and it is the smallest size for my 8 board, I hope I can do the same with my trucks so I can ride them on my 8 deck
@@LeonPaxton yeah pretty good, you can see that they are used and a bit grinded In, found whole deck with an old pink Chad Muska dia dos muertos deck, the deck was in pretty bad condition, rat tailed and Watters damaged but the trucks were alright
Other than a pair of independent stage 4s that I have (151s or 8.65" axles), I use 8.5 trucks on all my deck sizes. If you get some Nano Cubic wheels, the offset actually makes them stick out, even on a 9"deck
I’ve got to admire being able to ride that deck. I’ve got the same one but haven’t ridden it yet bar like 10 mins. 9” with 33” length and 15” wheel base is massive. And then Thunders too lenghtening the wheel base a little more even than like an Indie or Ace. If you want a possibly lighter pop you could go for Indie Titaniums. Light (not entirely as light as the Thunders) and shorter wheel base. Though I know you aren’t a big Indie fan.
@@pauliewalnuts5241 those are great too. Just a little heavier than the Titaniums. I have some 159 Titaniums I’ll probably stick on that deck. I really want to like it as another tall rider Brian Anderson also rides it (a little shorter than me though) and he is a wee favourite of mine.
Haha thanks dude, I'm a pretty big dude so that board just feels perfect to me 👌🏼 I'm actually looking to try some trucks like that for my next pair so I'll keep you updated on how they go 🙏🏼
@@LeonPaxton you do that! I’ll be watching as per usual. I’m probably bigger/same size being 6’5”/210lbs but I’m over here struggling to get lift off on 8.5”/14.5” 😂. I should probably just ride it and see for myself.
Thunder 147's have an 8" axle width so that is perfect for an 8" deck but will suit suit an 8.25" deck, the trucks will just sit slightly in on each side 👌🏼
My local skateshop might be able to order from the Baker Boys Distribution and I saw they had some Heroin boards in the catalogue. Was toying with the idea of just getting a ridiculous secondary setup like a 9.4 egg board with aces AF1s. I'm just wondering if theres anything with egg boards that would make squirrely or low trucks a bad idea?
I’ve been skating for over 20 years, when they made the new changes with 148’s and 149’s i wasn’t sure which ones to go with, i tried indy’s 149 but i only ride board sizes from 8.0 8.1 - no issue really, i tried 144 indy’s they felt kinda better for the board sizes i ride, i ride indy’s or thunders always, idk how the ventures or ace trucks are i am curious of how they are, if your looking for hella light set up go for TITANIUM TRUCKS, i am currently riding 148 thunder titaniums they feel great, wasn’t sure if i should size down because 147’s support up to boards 8.0 8.1, i like to play around with my set up and get it as light as possible, but i may size down for 147’s just to see how they are for flip tricks, i do hella flip/grinds
You're the same as me man! Always trying different things and testing out what feels and performs best! I would like to try some titanium trucks so I'll keep an eye out for some 🙏🏼
@@LeonPaxton hell yeah, i def recommend it because i ride 55mm spitfire wheels ever since boards got wider and weigh more and new trucks came out with new sizes, had to get the lightest, i don’t think i can go back to riding 7.75 boards anymore lol
@@LeonPaxton I would like to know too bro lol.. A guy sells this board in my country but here is difficult find 159s and the deck too.. I think first put risers on it.. And wider wheels for sure.. Im from Ecuador.. But Im honest Im not sure to buy..I think is not a big diference maybe. I would like your opinion about it🤙🛹..
I ride a size 9 board with 8.25 trucks 4 washers on the inner side of each wheel no washers on the outside and the bushings on the trucks are 2 top bushings👌🔥
139's have an 8" axle so your trucks will sit in 0.3" on either side which isn't toooo bad but I'd definitely be putting extra washers on the inside of my wheels to push them out further on the truck 👌🏼
interesting! I am buying a whole new set up and i was thinking if i should get trucks that are a smaller or slitghtly bigger than my board since the size of this particular board does not have exact fit trucks. Should i go for the bigger ones?
I'm riding a 9.4 Heroin Space egg 2 with 149 thunder hollows and spitfire lock in fulls. I had the option to go to a 151 thunder but decided to keep the weight down with the 149. The lock in fulls are a wide wheel so they make the board quite balanced. Slappy 5050s lock in better I think cause you're not sliding all over the place with a wider axle. Used to ride 169 and 215 trucks and my slappies would slide all over the place.
i ate asphalt having a half inch shorter truck than my deck. it sucked. I find if the truck it too short, its possible when you try leaning in to turn, if you lean too much your deck can flip and you fly.
I would go 159 dude, that has an axle width of 8.75" which will just sit in from the side of your board 👌🏼 You don't want trucks to sit outside the width of your board
Tried to go light once and got trapped trying to cloud walk and it limited my skating. Theory now is start heavier and then you have more flexibility for styles and spots - rough streets add risers and heavier tankier wheels but lighter trucks, beach curbs and dancing widen the board add rails with lighter trucks etc etc Between the flexibility to try new things but keep your practice weight and the strength benefits it is has panned out to be a better option for me not just financially (can build from sale items combining wheel and truck combos) but the ability to alter my set up no matter the spot or style I want to skate but keep the weight dialed is flash.
That's true! There are so many different combinations you can run with a set up so it can be hard to find the perfect set up built is also heaps fun to try a lot of different things 🙌🏼
You definitely want a smaller truck for those egg boards, because they taper so drastically. I have the 8.75 and made the mistake of getting 8.75 trucks to go with it. I can see the contact patch on all four wheels when I look down while riding b
4 washers for each wheel will make your axles easier to bend, especially hollow ones. You should surely get washers to extend it further, but they should match the hanger where the washers are, or be slightly bigger then hanger in diameter.
Why did boards got so much wider in the last years even though skateboarding has become do much more technical??? That seems counter intuitive to me and I did skate 20 years ago when most technical skater had 7,5-7,75 boards
I think as technical skating got more popular back in the day, people were finding smaller boards to be easier for flip tricks and technical tricks but then there was no stability or comfort on smaller boards like that. These days skating has progressed so much and set ups are being customised to tick a lot of boxes at once 🤔 Then you have anomalies like Franky Villani who skates a 9.1" deck and is super technical with it too lol
I ride with 3 washers on the inside of each wheel and personally think it's a pretty good idea 😊 I can't remember who I saw do it but ever since then I've done the same 👍
I find it's more possible to ride a slightly smaller truck than a larger truck. You may actually gain some flip control if you ride tighter trucks IMO.
I really want to try thunder trucks but if I went with the forged baseplate models, I'm worried I'll get wheelbite pretty bad with my 54mm wheels... Having trucks 3mm lower than the wheels feel kinda risky. I guess the pinch would be fantastic though lol I'm thinking I might just go with the standards because I can't find stock for team hollows anywhere 😢
most of my trucks are survivors from the '90s. so i have several pairs 7.5"-7.75" and only a couple 8-8.5" i don't mind trucks a bit narrower than the deck but i wouldn't push it more than 0.5" narrower than the deck, except my mike mcgill reissue is 10" with 149 indy stage 5s but they are a very wide old school wheel.
i went from indy 159s to 169 titaniums and it improved myy bowl skating SIGNIFIGANTLY. so yes they do. i read some other comments and i thought i should add that i ride a 9.5 deck and yes they do line up. before i got the 169s i was doing what the big guy did with the extra washers. it worked good enough
I know this video is "old" but hopefully I can get some tips here. I am a taller guy at 6"5 and I wear a size 16 shoe. It is very hard for me to know what board to get since I am re-introducing myself to skating. Im thinking on an 8.625 at the smallest and a 9 at the biggest. Any tips from anyone?
@@LeonPaxton i was thinking that too. my only issue is that i really like the shape of an 8 board. alot of shops i’ve looked at so far start looking pretty odd when you go 9 and up. any board or shop recommendations?
I used to love the 9" Anti Hero board that they make since the shape and quality is amazing but it also has a 15" wheel base and the length is long too so it's great for tall guys with big feet 👌🏼
I bought an 8.1 something and the guy sold me indy 139's and I like to use them on my 8.25 boards. Its fun but I don't land 180 and other tricks that I suspect would be easier with proper trucks
@@LeonPaxton on the original board they were fine. But on the 8.25 they are a little small. I ended up getting 144's and it feels way better. However those same 144's on a 8.5 feel great. It might be the difference between basic indy's and hollows. Either way great video and thanks for the comment
I'm only 5'6 and I ride 149 Indys on an 8.75 deck. To me, it's always been the sweet spot. But I always get made fun of at my local spot for being a small dude carrying surfboard with wheels 😂. I skate mostly ledges and rails, and my set up makes it a little easier for me. Smaller decks actually scares me. I couldn't even land a kickflip on that shit.
Usually for example if you have a 9.0 egg and 9.0 trucks the trucks will stick out a little bit so a quarter inch down usually works pretty well, so 9.0 egg with 8.75 trucks. But this really depends on how much your egg tappers as well.
Now that I think about it I don't think they weight difference would be much either 🤔 I'll try and get my hands on some more and weigh them to see the difference 👌🏼
Now that I'm old. I skate 8.25 with 149 trucks and I just got back into to skating 8.38 I'm about to put 159 trucks. The trucks is indys after 21 years later
I’m 49 and after being back experimenting for a few years am loving 8.625 with 159s and medium wide wheels that sit flush or a bit wider. Flips fine, stable platform for everything else
Do you have your axle nut flush to the end of the axle? That will have the same effect but your wheel will just have a bit more wiggle room without extra washers on the inside
@@LeonPaxton i really Love the wheels to Wiggle, Love the Sound and when i get on a grind they move toward rail, i don’t crank my nuts at all, just exactly at the begin of the axle so to Cover all the Threads :))
Hi! I am Planning a 9.125 egg deck, but keep a Thunder 149, in my idea should be ok, cause a egg taper way more than a standard popsicle on the trucks, so even if it’s 9.125, it’s going to be like 8.875 on the trucks, and that should be fine, as i anyway like to ride half inch smaller trucks, (usually 147 in a 8.5) do you think I my calculations are right? Or I miss something?
I predominantly ride 159 Indy Titanium trucks on everything from a 8.38 Popsicle to an 9.25 Egg/Football. I also have extra washers and freestyle squashed nuts for the really bigger boards. 8.38 is the totally smallest board I would ever ride and will avoid that shit at all costs. I have 169 Titaniums and 215s for anything bigger I might want to mess around with so a 9.25 Egg/Football is the max I'll ride on my 159s.
@@LeonPaxton these Heroin Egg boards are my cup of tea. Wide boards you can ride smaller trucks on. I've got them in bunches of sizes. Been on those for quite some time.
@@LeonPaxton I'm still learning my ollies lol so idk, but it felt a bit weird under my feet so I just bought a bigger board and turns out that size suits me better

I always ride my trucks wider than the board when using conical shaped wheels, I ride 8.25“ and 8.38“ with 8.5“ trucks and conical shaped wheels
If I want to work on my switch flips I ride 8.25“ with 8.25“ trucks and classics because it is less effort

Would love a video about truck sizes on egg boards as you’ve talked about them briefly on other videos but I’m getting confused as to what size to get for different egg boards! I want to try some different sizes but don’t know what size trucks to get 🤷♂️
Welcome back dude and thanks so much 🙏🏼
Awesome dude. I can definitely do that! It does get very confusing with so much information out there lol
just got the new 9 inch dalton dern board and im riding it on my old ace 55s with wide boys and it feels totally fine
Sick! Yeah that would feel super stable man 👌🏼
I found a pair of 129 Indy’s in my garage made in the US, can u use them on a 8” board or should I stick with my 139’s ?
The 139’s will fit an 8” perfectly but the 129’d will be fine, the trucks will just slightly sit in on each sode
New sub 😂 seen that first fall and the "ahhh fuck" relatable love the content
Haha yeah dude!
Thank you 🙏🏽
I ride 8.5 krux k5s with a 8.5 deck but thinking about moving up to a 9 deck and keeping the 8.5 krux..would there be much of a difference?
Yeah dude of course that will work 👌🏼
the trucks will only sit in 1/4 inch on either side which won't be an issue at all. You can put extra washers on the inside of your wheels as well if you wanted to push your wheels out a bit more to be closer to the width of your board
Will 151 thunders be good for 8.6 decks ?? Or add extra washers on my 149s ? Two or 3 ?
151's have an 8.75" axle width so the trucks will sit out from the edge of your board very slightly which will be fine but I would just keep the 149's on since they. are 8.5" wide they will just barely sit on the inside of your deck and don't really need to push your wheels out further 👌🏼
If you do want to add washers on the inside of your wheels though I usually put as many on to where I can get my axle nut tightened down flush with the axle. Hopefully that helps man 🙏🏼
i have 8” deck with 139mm independent trucks. would those 139mms be fine on a 8.25” deck?
Yeah dude, those trucks have an axle width of 8" so they will just sit in slightly on either side but that will be fine 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton omg tysm, this is practically my first deck so ty so much for the help. gonna sub rn
No problem at all man!
I had a 7.75 deck 139 indy’s i setup my Real board 8.3 deck with same trucks works great
Definitely matters, I hate when the trucks are too narrow, its like a tight rope effect trying to pop
It really is!
Great work on the vids and hope u keep making more
Thanks dude, I definitely will!
Damn dude, that set up sounds sick though!
Deck 8.0 and thunder 145 truck 7,62
Does it have any major negative effects?
Not at all man, your trucks will just slightly be sitting in on each side. If anything it will help with flip tricks since your board will be able to roll over a little easier 👌🏼
I tried 8.5 independent trucks with 54mm wheels and a 8.75 board it was sooo hard to tre flip i think its because of the under sized trucks or the wheel base
Oh really? Damn I would have thought it would flip easier and be a little easier to roll over for a tre flip 🤔
I have some nice old grind king trucks, but it's the 5 size model and it is the smallest size for my 8 board, I hope I can do the same with my trucks so I can ride them on my 8 deck
Damn that's sick! Are they still in good condition?
Yeah dude, this should definitely work 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton yeah pretty good, you can see that they are used and a bit grinded In, found whole deck with an old pink Chad Muska dia dos muertos deck, the deck was in pretty bad condition, rat tailed and Watters damaged but the trucks were alright
Got it for like 10 bucks
Damn that's so sick man!
Other than a pair of independent stage 4s that I have (151s or 8.65" axles), I use 8.5 trucks on all my deck sizes. If you get some Nano Cubic wheels, the offset actually makes them stick out, even on a 9"deck
Yeah dude, that’s another good thing about the Nano Cubics!
I was riding them with 9” trucks on 9.5”-9.75” decks and it worked perfectly 👌🏽
I’ve got to admire being able to ride that deck. I’ve got the same one but haven’t ridden it yet bar like 10 mins. 9” with 33” length and 15” wheel base is massive. And then Thunders too lenghtening the wheel base a little more even than like an Indie or Ace. If you want a possibly lighter pop you could go for Indie Titaniums. Light (not entirely as light as the Thunders) and shorter wheel base. Though I know you aren’t a big Indie fan.
Indy forged hollows have been really great for me.
Haha thanks dude, I'm a pretty big dude so that board just feels perfect to me 👌🏼
I'm actually looking to try some trucks like that for my next pair so I'll keep you updated on how they go 🙏🏼
@@LeonPaxton you do that! I’ll be watching as per usual. I’m probably bigger/same size being 6’5”/210lbs but I’m over here struggling to get lift off on 8.5”/14.5” 😂. I should probably just ride it and see for myself.
I know you probably wont answer this question but, would thunders 147 fit with boards between 8.00 and 8.25?
Thunder 147's have an 8" axle width so that is perfect for an 8" deck but will suit suit an 8.25" deck, the trucks will just sit slightly in on each side 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton thanks for the answer bro, means a lot too me
No problem dude, thanks o much for watching 🙏🏼
My local skateshop might be able to order from the Baker Boys Distribution and I saw they had some Heroin boards in the catalogue. Was toying with the idea of just getting a ridiculous secondary setup like a 9.4 egg board with aces AF1s. I'm just wondering if theres anything with egg boards that would make squirrely or low trucks a bad idea?
Dude that setup would be amazing!
Not really, it just depends on what type of skating you want to do as well?
@@LeonPaxton no idea, currently there isn't much transition nearby to skate so I was thinking something like a hybrid skateboard/cruiser
Nah those boards will feel tiny for you now lol
What a great hack man! Excellent vid 🤙🏼
Thanks dude, glad it helped! 🙏🏼
Andrew Reynolds and a lot of the Baker crew rode 8.5s with 139 (8”) Indy’s back in the day. It’s definitely doable
Yeah dude, I heard about that!
If it's good enough for Andrew Reynolds then it's good enough for me lol
Got my first 8.5 board but seller sent me 139 indy... super weird
@@azumkyo so you bought a board and received Trucks instead?
Because zt that time, indy dont have de 144, and the standard 149 aren't light enought for the indy riders
@@azumkyothat’s actually sucks.
Bro.. What do you think about a Tom knox 10 x 31 with 149 indys??
Damn those trucks are a bit small for that board! How does it feel?
@@LeonPaxton I would like to know too bro lol.. A guy sells this board in my country but here is difficult find 159s and the deck too.. I think first put risers on it.. And wider wheels for sure.. Im from Ecuador.. But Im honest Im not sure to buy..I think is not a big diference maybe. I would like your opinion about it🤙🛹..
What truck size is for 8.125 deck?
I’d go with 8” man 👌🏽
I ride a size 9 board with 8.25 trucks 4 washers on the inner side of each wheel no washers on the outside and the bushings on the trucks are 2 top bushings👌🔥
Sound like you got it figured out man 👌🏼
is it fine if my 8,5 board goes with a 139 truck?
Are they 139 Thunder's or Independent's?
I just got an 8.5 deck and I threw on my 139 indys now I’m going up to 149.
is size 8.6deck to size 139indys is okay?
139's have an 8" axle so your trucks will sit in 0.3" on either side which isn't toooo bad but I'd definitely be putting extra washers on the inside of my wheels to push them out further on the truck 👌🏼
i skate a 9 with 149 trucks i know damn well it matters needa size up my trucks but am trying to figure out if i get 159s or 169s
I would go 151 dude! That has an axle width of 8.75" so it will obviously sit in 1/8 of an inch on each side but that will barely be noticeable 👌🏼
159 perfect on that anti hero, i have same setup
@@LeonPaxton i met someone yesterday that skates a 9 deck with ace 66 trucks and the hanger is 163 on those. it honestly looks n feels perfect to me
@@LeonPaxton thanks 4 the response tho
No problem dude!
It's definitely personal preference but you would want to try and keep your truck size within a quarter inch of your deck size 👌🏼
This video speaks volumes, i ride a 8.38 with 8.5 trucks and it fits me and my tricks perfect
Yessss never regretted switching to 8.5 trucks on my 8.38 and does not feel wierd
That's sick dude, it doesn't always have to be a flush fit so that size sounds like it works well 👌🏼
interesting! I am buying a whole new set up and i was thinking if i should get trucks that are a smaller or slitghtly bigger than my board since the size of this particular board does not have exact fit trucks. Should i go for the bigger ones?
I've been skating 8.25 with an 8" truck(also hollow lights). Actually my fav setup ever. Keeps the lightness of an 8 but you get a little extra room.
Yeah dude, that sounds perfect!
Hell yeah, I picked up one of those as well!
Sick man, that set up sounds so fun!
I think I want to try some lock ins for my next wheel 🤔
@@LeonPaxton Be keen to hear your thoughts on them!
I ride a 8" deck so how small a truck would be ok do you think, 7.5?
Yeah of course man, your trucks will only be sitting in a 1/4 inch on each side which is fine. Same distance as the set up I’m riding in this video 👌🏽
i ate asphalt having a half inch shorter truck than my deck. it sucked. I find if the truck it too short, its possible when you try leaning in to turn, if you lean too much your deck can flip and you fly.
Oh damn dude that suck. Yeah I've had that feeling on boards before and it doesn't feel very safe lol
if i buy a 9' board should i buy independent 169 or 159?
I would go 159 dude, that has an axle width of 8.75" which will just sit in from the side of your board 👌🏼
You don't want trucks to sit outside the width of your board
Tried to go light once and got trapped trying to cloud walk and it limited my skating. Theory now is start heavier and then you have more flexibility for styles and spots - rough streets add risers and heavier tankier wheels but lighter trucks, beach curbs and dancing widen the board add rails with lighter trucks etc etc
Between the flexibility to try new things but keep your practice weight and the strength benefits it is has panned out to be a better option for me not just financially (can build from sale items combining wheel and truck combos) but the ability to alter my set up no matter the spot or style I want to skate but keep the weight dialed is flash.
That's true! There are so many different combinations you can run with a set up so it can be hard to find the perfect set up built is also heaps fun to try a lot of different things 🙌🏼
u guys think indies 149 would work w a 8.75 board?
Yeah dude that's perfect! Those trucks are 8.5" wide so they will just slightly sit in from the outside of the 8.75" deck 👌🏼
You definitely want a smaller truck for those egg boards, because they taper so drastically. I have the 8.75 and made the mistake of getting 8.75 trucks to go with it. I can see the contact patch on all four wheels when I look down while riding b
Yeah exactly! Oh dude, that would be so annoying lol
Hey Leon, I have Indy 159''s on a 9.5 " deck. Have 60mm wheels, it looks fine to me though.
Yeah that will be fine, the trucks will just sit in a bit on either side but if it feels good to you then keep it up 🙌🏼
@@LeonPaxton I decided to buy a pair of Indy 169's and going to sell my 159 Indy's😊
4 washers for each wheel will make your axles easier to bend, especially hollow ones. You should surely get washers to extend it further, but they should match the hanger where the washers are, or be slightly bigger then hanger in diameter.
I was wondering the long term effect of that myself too!
I'll just keep an eye on that and see how the hollow axles hold up 👌🏼
Why did boards got so much wider in the last years even though skateboarding has become do much more technical??? That seems counter intuitive to me and I did skate 20 years ago when most technical skater had 7,5-7,75 boards
I think as technical skating got more popular back in the day, people were finding smaller boards to be easier for flip tricks and technical tricks but then there was no stability or comfort on smaller boards like that. These days skating has progressed so much and set ups are being customised to tick a lot of boxes at once 🤔
Then you have anomalies like Franky Villani who skates a 9.1" deck and is super technical with it too lol
I ride with 3 washers on the inside of each wheel and personally think it's a pretty good idea 😊 I can't remember who I saw do it but ever since then I've done the same 👍
Yeah dude, it helps me so much!
Ishod Wair does it too 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton then it's gotta work if Ishod does it! 😜🤟💙
Don't your bearings get messed up faster? Because of the friction between the nut and the bearings?
I find it's more possible to ride a slightly smaller truck than a larger truck. You may actually gain some flip control if you ride tighter trucks IMO.
Man I can’t shake the board craze. But this really helps me not care much about my set ups
Aww dude, trust me I have my fair share of board madness but some things just make sense to my more so I go with it lol
You’ll be fine
Sorry, the cool color way releases are made in certain sizes. That is why trucks are hard to get too.
Put a riser pad lol
Yeah dude pinch will be great but you can definitely use riser pads to balance out the difference 👌🏼
Good to see a carpark sesh 👍
That carpark was actually so fun too!
most of my trucks are survivors from the '90s. so i have several pairs 7.5"-7.75" and only a couple 8-8.5" i don't mind trucks a bit narrower than the deck but i wouldn't push it more than 0.5" narrower than the deck, except my mike mcgill reissue is 10" with 149 indy stage 5s but they are a very wide old school wheel.
Yeah dude, sometimes there's exceptions when you have the big shaped boards for sure
i will try this, im going a size up but dont wanna buy new trucks
Hell yeah dude, let me know how it goes 🙏🏼
i went from indy 159s to 169 titaniums and it improved myy bowl skating SIGNIFIGANTLY. so yes they do. i read some other comments and i thought i should add that i ride a 9.5 deck and yes they do line up. before i got the 169s i was doing what the big guy did with the extra washers. it worked good enough
For sure man. Wider trucks would have felt way better and more stable for bowl skating!
See I have this problem with my kickflips landing primo Everytime cause I ride a 8.75 with 8.5 trucks
That sucks dude!
Dude if you're a size 16 I would say try a board from a 9" up to a 10" for sure!
@@LeonPaxton thank you very much man i appreciate your time
No problem at all my man 🙏🏼
I bought an 8.1 something and the guy sold me indy 139's and I like to use them on my 8.25 boards. Its fun but I don't land 180 and other tricks that I suspect would be easier with proper trucks
Those trucks shouldn't be too bad at all, sounds like they would sit just slightly wider than your deck right?
@@LeonPaxton on the original board they were fine. But on the 8.25 they are a little small. I ended up getting 144's and it feels way better. However those same 144's on a 8.5 feel great. It might be the difference between basic indy's and hollows. Either way great video and thanks for the comment
You need some risers to prevent that wheel rub.
Yeah that’s sick! Dude, bigger boards are perfect for our style of skating 👌🏽
Who needs kick flips anyway lol
how do you size your egg shaped boards?
Usually for example if you have a 9.0 egg and 9.0 trucks the trucks will stick out a little bit so a quarter inch down usually works pretty well, so 9.0 egg with 8.75 trucks. But this really depends on how much your egg tappers as well.
Yeah dude, you can usually get away with a smaller size truck to your egg board since the board tapers in towards the trucks 👌🏼
I found out that if you use a bearing spacer you might not be able to fit as many washers inside.
That's true, I think they make your bearings sit slightly wider with the spacer inside 🤔
Damn how tall are you? 9" with 15" wb would be insane for me.
I'm about 6.2' dude so that board is pretty perfect for me but it's a beast of a board for most people lol
What is the actual weight difference between the two does anyone know???? Doesn't seem like it would be much difference.
Now that I think about it I don't think they weight difference would be much either 🤔
I'll try and get my hands on some more and weigh them to see the difference 👌🏼
When you do flip tricka into primo on purpose, truck size definitely matters, especially if you do primo slides.
I have varial flips into primo.
Yeah dude, you definitely want flush trucks if you want to do primo's!
Now that I'm old. I skate 8.25 with 149 trucks and I just got back into to skating 8.38 I'm about to put 159 trucks. The trucks is indys after 21 years later
The wider trucks and board will feel more stable for you too 👌🏽
I’m 49 and after being back experimenting for a few years am loving 8.625 with 159s and medium wide wheels that sit flush or a bit wider. Flips fine, stable platform for everything else
Hmm with 149s thunder i would go no bigger then 8.6 i ride 8.5 boards
Powell Freestyle wheels work best for this
What's your height?
I think about 6'1" dude

Hahaha yeah I think we have all done stuff like that too!
i ride a 8.75 for indy 159s and love it
Perfect combo dude 👌🏼
I do use 147 on a 8.5 Deck Form the Same Reason But no extra Washers 😊
Do you have your axle nut flush to the end of the axle?
That will have the same effect but your wheel will just have a bit more wiggle room without extra washers on the inside
@@LeonPaxton i really Love the wheels to Wiggle, Love the Sound and when i get on a grind they move toward rail, i don’t crank my nuts at all, just exactly at the begin of the axle so to Cover all the Threads :))
That sounds perfect man 👌🏼
Riding indys 169 to a 8.375 - 8.5 deck size.
Oh dude, how does it feel riding wider trucks than your board width?
Yeh nah😂
You should switch to Ace’s on your egg board. The turning is way more playful and enjoyable
I've have actually switched truck brands so that video will be coming out soon 🤫
i add the washers anyways so i dont damage my threads.
Oh dude, sounds like you have it all figured out 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton these Heroin Egg boards are my cup of tea. Wide boards you can ride smaller trucks on. I've got them in bunches of sizes. Been on those for quite some time.

How are the stage 4's in general?

8.25 with 149 Indys!!! and who the fuck rides a 9? Holy shit! Mega ramp board.
9" egg or football shapes end up being 8.5" at the trucks.
Yeah dude, this is a popsicle though so it sat in a fair bit on each side
its harder to tre flip if you match your trucks to the board, having truckers smaller is better
Yeah dude, having your trucks slightly sitting in definitely helps your board roll over as you're popping 👌🏼
Magic Carpet Ride!
That's what one of my homies call it 😂
150 ventures on a 8.25 deck oj 53 hardlines lets go
Haven't tried ventures for about 12 years! Might be time to get a pair 🤔
You only need one washer on each side of every wheel imo. 8 in total. Having more is pointless overkill. Just more weight.
1 either side is definitely necessary but I wanted to push my wheels out as far as I could and create more hanger surface 👌🏼
