I love switching between different set ups even though I have no tricks in the bag besides the ollie. There’s always something I like about a different set up. And thanks to this channel I actually know a lot more about what sets one set up apart from the other.
Just getting back into skating after 14 years or so. I ordered a 8.75 to try. I'm 6'7" with size 15 shoe so I hope the extra real estate will be nice to have. Thanks for the great vids!
Did you like it? And do you still skate I just took a really look break I did it a few times all together I skated like 3 months the last decade but I’ve been relearning tricks very fast each day I get more comfortable I get a few tricks back because I know how to do them my body is just rusty. I wanna get normal hard flips down I’m so close.
I can't believe our decks were 10 inches in the 80's, that thing looks huge . I was looking at boards over 8.5 now I know not to go beyond that scale, so glad ya did this video.
Ive been skating deluxe’s 8.5 x 32.5 x 14.75 lately. I thought 14.75 would be too much wheelbase, but after watching paul schmitt’s nine club and hearing him talk about longer wheelbases for taller skaters, i wanted to give it a try. I love it! I do mostly basic ledge stuff and dont flip my board a ton, so im not sure if it would be a good fit if i was more tech, but it definitely works for what I do.
I like to ride bigger wheels or use risers as well on my bigger decks. Makes the pop steeper (Watch schmitt’s pop ollies higher) which gives my longer legs time to slide up the board vs a quicker pop & having to slider faster than I want.
They are harder to flip, I got an 8.75 anti hero/grimple stix, didnt like adjusting my flick for the length of the board. So now I'm on an 8.5" width 32" length 14.25" wheelbase. It's almost perfect, but definately not as good for big Ollies like with a longer wheelbase.
Your son did a great job filming and giving you a hard time. I think the flat ground tricks look great on the big board. It is just gnarly. Sorry you slammed the transition out of yourself. You will be back at the big bowl. It is just who you are. I also just bought a 8.75. I went with the Welcome Chris Miller Sleeping Cat on cat blood 2.0. it is a shaped deck. I love my 10 inch Welcome and excited to out this one together. I bought the new Grind Kings to put in it.
@@josephacevedo8576 I'm 5 ft 6 and weigh 54kg and I skate a 9.0. I'd def reccomend a big board. I personally dig it, its just whatever you're comfy with I guess. I can do anything my friends can do on their 8.0 boards with my 9.0. Once you get used to a big deck i find it's so much more comfy and landing tricks is so easy having the extra space😊
So hyped for this one! I got the Brian Anderson popsicle 8.75 x 32.56! I think I realized I don’t care about the width as long as I have a 14.5 wheelbase and length is 32-32.5. I guess we won’t see a 9 inch review. Lol!
keep your shoulders straight and use your back foot to sweep it as hard as you can. once its spinning getting the flip is all in the front foot position so just mess around until you find the foot position that you are most comfortable with and flips the board. the flick of the front foot is much less important that the back foot scoop. practice is the only way youre gonna get em tho. it took me like 2 weeks of trying nothing but tres until i started getting them. good luck my dude!
Lean towards your back leg you feel it in your thigh going fast or not you gotta pressure that back thigh and ofc scoop that ball of foot no flick.. pull front foot closer.. too much flick push front foot towards bolts
that board looks sick! I've been riding a krooked ronnie sandoval 8.5 full, 14.6wb, with indie 159s and i love it. and I'm a scrawny old dude, 38, 5'10, 130ish and it just works. I'm not doing flip tricks like i used to so i don't go skinnier than and 8.38. ps that nollie fs heel during that flat ground session was buttery!
One of my favorite skaters on yt. This guy is what I aspire to be when I have kids lmao. I wanna be a cool dad that can shred at the park, and pull up to the school to pick up my kid jamming out a Rush album
So.. I've picked up, or will be picking up a new skateboard in a month or so after 5-6 years of no skating. I skated for about 3 years total. Changed about 6 -7 decks. And I'd say I was just getting the hang of it. Was midway learning how to vert skate, and was already landing 360 flips and those similar '' intermediate'' tricks. And I jsut stopped. For some reason, just one day, never stood on a skateboard, been watching your stuff for a few days. Gave ma a fuckton of insipiration to start it again, and as a form of cardio oppose to gymtime. Thanks for that man, appreciate it. Offtopic for anyone in the comment section, I used to ride 7.75 of those 6 decks, now im switching to an 8 as my first board after a few years, since my feet are bigger, and I remember having trouble landing on that 7.75 board.. and consider my local skateshops and even on the internet don't have the trucks I want which are ( funny enough ) indies. 149 to an 8 inch deck or 139? Cheers
I ride 8.68. 159 Indy Titanium. 54 spitfire radials. I've rode a similar setup for 3years and find it to be my personal sweet spot for big transition and flatground respectively
I understand finding your limit for board size. I also really understand the limit on transition size - there comes a time (usually after a slam) when it seems too high to be worth it. Plus minis are fun as hell.
I really recommend the 9.0 Bakers, they’re WIDE, of course being a 9.0, but unlike what you make expect it’s only 32 inches in length, with a 14.25 inch wheel base
Nice to see you, sure large boards are amazing too! Maybe you can have some lunch on this table board. Impressed to see ho you manage in flipping this massive thing!!
Been riding lots of different setups, but my favorite ever was a polar 8.75 with the hollow forged indy 149 amd spitfire conical full 56mm. That setup felt so good, and the shorter wheelbase on the polar decks made it feel really light and nimble.
When I got back into skating at 41 a year ago I started on an 8.75 and got reasonably good on it but I've got smaller gradually and I've found I like 8.18 but now I pick up that big deck and I don't know how I ever got it off the ground 8.75 is a big board for street in my opinion. Another at video Ben.thanks.
For me 8.25 feels like the perfect size, small enough to flip fast to get more technical tricks, wide enough I feel confident landing on it when doing gaps and such
I've never bought any HUF shoe, but I'm bummed for sure. At least they're still selling the Dylan slip on on their website. I hope it lasts longer enough so I can get a pair someday.
I just came back to skating after 5 years off, and rode 8 and 8.5” board for the first month and a half. Then, I got a Powell shape 245 flight deck and that has been really nice to skate on, but awkward at times. I’m 6’2” and wear a size 11-11.5 (usually an EU 45) shoe, and the width was a nice change. But the length of 33” with a 15” wheelbase has been nice and stable in getting my grinds back, but sometimes I go to jump off and...I’m still on the board. LOL
Peepin' the AA banner at 10:32. Can we get the two raddest Canadian skateboarders in one video? Andy on Ben's channel talking gear and skating together would be amazing.
When you talk about your bail. I had one testerday from 5 feet on a fakie rock straight to the ribs. I feel you man. and 8.75 is a good size to do all sorts of skating on. Just a bit heavy.
There are skaters like Ducky Kovacs and Andy Anderson who skate 8.5 / 9 inches boards really well. Maybe they are fully used to skating those massive boards due to the long time they've been doing it. I'm currently skating a plan old 8 inches, but I'm sizing up to 8.5 inches the next one. I'm sure it's gonna be smoother and cooler that my current setup. I'm tall and lanky, I really need a bigger board so my feet fit more comfortably.
How ironic, I litteraly got my first 8.75 last week and the trucks barely got delivered yesterday, deathwish 8.75 and venture 6.1s very blunt nose but regular tail , and your son is a good filmer
Great video. Now think this. Jason Lee came up with the 'tre' using a 10.5 board. (I know that Rodney M did it before, but most people didn't even recognize a new trick.... 'Just another crazy Rodney trick'... There were so many of them that people couldn't differentiate them). Anyway, Jason L was awesome.
I've been skating 8.75s for several years now. Before that I skated 8.5s. Have dabbled in 9s, but those end up being a little too much for certain flip tricks(8.75s are a bit much for double heels, but that's about the only limiter I've noticed on them, plus my right ankle doesn't like that much heel flip action very often). I don't skate bowls though, just park stuff like manuals and ledges/flat bars and more mellow transition. Ankle has been a bit off so haven't skated much at all in the past few weeks; really looking forward to getting out soon. You did really well on a deck outside your comfort zone I think; was apparent it wasn't optimal, but you got a lot of your regular tricks on it. Also: that 8.75 full anti hero sounds exactly like something I'd love to skate, just ordered one online after watching this.
I love skating boards from 8.6 to 8.8 it just makes my flip tricks look better and I think it’s because of what you said about muscle memory because I tried to skate an 8.1 and it just wasn’t working
4:17 Boss I am done doing inventory for the warehouse… Boss: Good! now stand here! Hands behind you back and watch me skate! And make sure clap when I land my tricks!!
Man, you saying that sometimes you just get unlucky in skateboarding, just rung a bell. 😂 Tried to Pop shuv over a board yesterday and landed into a rough ankle roll. Keep killing it brother!
sir I'm currently on an 8.8 with a 14.5 ish wheelbase but I normally 9s with a 14.75 wheelbase. I'm 6'8" and a size 13 shoe tho so I'm probably the exception to the rule and not the rule lmao
@@lowek7773 Yep... the first time I brought it out at a local Park, a kid about 14 y/o saw me and asked if he could try it... first thing he did was huck a perfect KF....and I've got Indy 215s on it. HA!!
Hell yeah!! Maybe you should try the football shape Polar that’s 8.75? Around the trucks it’s 8.25 and from what I heard skates like a smaller board. Or try the Franky Villani/Big egg shape. The widest point is 9.1 or 9.25 and feels like a 8.5ish board
Just got a Santa Cruz 9" flamming dot. everything about it is pretty medium except it's huge all over. It's 32.5" long with 14.5" wheel base the nose and tail are a hair under 6.75" with one finger of flat I can't tell the difference. It's the most symmetrical board I ever had. Just got it in the mail. Picked this just so I won't do tricks and get hurt. I'm 49 and can't lose my union construction job Got 60mm Ricta clouds and it's my liquor store cruiser. The size is still tripping me out. Haven't rode anything this big since the '80s.
Ok. 9" update. I was skating my old 8.25s for a while. Then an abdominal injury at work. So off my feet a long time. Finally got going this summer. The original idea for a 9" was a commute board with soft 60mms that I couldn't get hurt doing tricks with. Because it's too big for me to manipulate. I'm in my 50s and can't afford it. This fucker flies like the wind and it's so big I can't do any tricks. Including kick turns:( Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Next you should try a 9 inch baker! The nose is pretty small compared to other 9s and the wheelbase 14.5, which is pretty common. I have one I haven’t set up yet and I’d love to know what you think before I ride it. You should also do a video on how different wheelbases affect your skating. Im riding a welcome right now with a 14 inch wheelbase and it feels pretty short. Thank you Ben, love your videos.
I've become a huge Real Full SE fanboy since starting skating last year. The 8.06 Real Full SE is just about the perfect deck size for me. I'm about 5'8", 160lbs and my first board was an 8.38 Real deck. It was great for cruising down the sidewalk on some 56mm OJ wheels but felt too unwieldy when trying to learn tricks. I tried an 8.25 Full SE as well before honing in on the 8.06 size. My current setup feels perfect and consists of an 8.06 Kyle Walker Real Full SE deck riding on Independent 139 Stage 11 Hollows, Spitfire 53mm Formula 4 Classics (99A) and Bones Swiss bearings.
Dont feel bad I took a nasty slam at a park once doing an axel stall too and had to literally crawl back to the car. Ahh the pains remind us of our age hah. My home park I used to slam so hard, concrete just doesnt forgive anyone
This helped me clarify that it's not the width of the board that's messing with me it's the length...The width definately effects me but I'm going to get something around an 8 something but hopefully find a shorter length...I also have short legs lol
I have always wanted to try an 8,75 setup seeing Kader Sylla rips on it. Think he rides an 8.8 or 8,75 x 32 x 14,5 on indy 169/159 with 58mm wheels. I know he on venture know but yeah!
I've been on 8,5 boards for a long time, not going any less wide (maybe 8,38 once in a while), but after this video I really wanna try something a little bit bigger. Maybe even a fat shaped board, would be fun to trick around with
go for it, any good shop would have em. where i shop its a whole row on the wall and completes on the shelves. try to keep the length at at least 31”, for a 5’10 guy at least.
@@rupert6478 still have a shaped board setup as a cruiser/fuck around board now, but still mainly ride 8,5s. i recommend the fat boards, theyre super fun
i have ridden a couple 8.8 boards. all of them were Love'n'skate boards. really enjoyed the size and the shapes. my fliptrick game isn't strong but i didn't struggle with the decks at all.
If the edge is sharp edge where you hung up its the conical wheel. It happens to me quite a bit 56mm up. On the brick volcano at lynch family skate park. That's why I switched back to classic shape

🙂
"Body checked the ground."
I'll probably use that.
5:42 🤣 your son was cracking me up
inspiration to keep skating at 29 thanks man
Man I love that trick at 6:27 so steezy!
I love skating boards from 8.6 to 8.8 it just makes my flip tricks look better and I think it’s because of what you said about muscle memory because I tried to skate an 8.1 and it just wasn’t working
4:17 Boss I am done doing inventory for the warehouse…
Boss: Good! now stand here! Hands behind you back and watch me skate! And make sure clap when I land my tricks!!
“At 33 inches long it was just more than I knew what to do with” 😂this is comedy gold
Your son did a killer job filming. He'll be a pro in no time!
I slammed yesterday whilst laughing at a mate who slammed.. 😕
Instant karma. Sorry to say but you deserve it dude.
The Skate Gods frowned upon you that day.
What size trucks do you ride with it?
Ben, stop messing around..... I’ve got an 11” x 34” Pig with a 16” wheelbase: G. O. W. I. D. E. R
but can you kick flip
Kkidzz can pigs be double kicked? or is that called a 90s shape?
@@lowek7773 Yep... the first time I brought it out at a local Park, a kid about 14 y/o saw me and asked if he could try it... first thing he did was huck a perfect KF....and I've got Indy 215s on it. HA!!
@@mr.jamster8414 Yes, they can. Mine is'nt though. I shaped it with a very wide blunt flat nose.
@@Kkidzz just joking , that's what we tell my homie who has a huge board , he also has 215's
Loved me an 8.75 deck
I rode mostly 9-9.25 'old school shaped' though!
Those were good times
First thought when I see titles like this on your videos is “yes you can, I believe in you”
those nollie fs flips never cease to amaze
It's 32.5" long with 14.5" wheel base
the nose and tail are a hair under 6.75" with one finger of flat
I can't tell the difference. It's the most symmetrical board I ever had.
Just got it in the mail. Picked this just so I won't do tricks and get hurt.
I'm 49 and can't lose my union construction job
Got 60mm Ricta clouds and it's my liquor store cruiser.
Including kick turns:(
Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
You'll get comfortable on that transition again
Next you should try a 9 inch baker! The nose is pretty small compared to other 9s and the wheelbase 14.5, which is pretty common. I have one I haven’t set up yet and I’d love to know what you think before I ride it. You should also do a video on how different wheelbases affect your skating. Im riding a welcome right now with a 14 inch wheelbase and it feels pretty short. Thank you Ben, love your videos.
my board flew out from under me at brookswood at 8am on a sunday, ill be in a cast for at least 2 weeks...
Figures you'd fall on transition doing a basic trick with a "transition" board set up 😂 skateboarding is so funny like that.
I'm on a chocolate 9.25 it's got a 13.875 WB and I believe is 32 in length and I'm in love
the 90s-ish shape? what wheels?
Big boards are the best! It's more comfortable on 169's and 60mm wheels. Mini ramp session looked fun.
Last month stepped up to an 8,5 and loving it
Rick Wiebolt same
Haha great video man. I thought tht deck would be a lot harder to control... then again theres andy anderson out there like wtf lol cheers Ben
Beautiful setup. Love my big boy boards 🤤
2024 Can I ride an 47in dancing Longboard?
😂😭
son filmed his dad while skating?? thats the future dream i said
This helped me clarify that it's not the width of the board that's messing with me it's the length...The width definately effects me but I'm going to get something around an 8 something but hopefully find a shorter length...I also have short legs lol
dude after I went 8.7 I couldn't go back down. feels so right.
What Griptape does ben degros use?
nothing against whatever he uses but just use MOB best grip out
@@lowek7773 that's what I use🙂
@@bendegros aww yeeea
This last year, I've been the madman skating a 9.13 Andy Anderson. It's alot to flip!
I have always wanted to try an 8,75 setup seeing Kader Sylla rips on it. Think he rides an 8.8 or 8,75 x 32 x 14,5 on indy 169/159 with 58mm wheels. I know he on venture know but yeah!
pretty sure he went to 8.25 now
Martin Hall where you heard? He still ripped on the 8,75 if you watch baker 4, candyland and so on
He was riding 9.0, not 8.75, his pro model is 9.0, and IMO the best shape for bigger boards, it’s wide, but still only 32 inches in length
Gray Cristian I thought he rode 8.75, then 8.8, then a 9. But i could be wrong
6:12 had me rollin on the floor!!!
@@mr.jamster8414 yea my local definitely has a bunch of shaped polar boards atleast, a couple 8,7 popsicles too. Might go for one soon
@@chrisu-_- how did that go
@@rupert6478 still have a shaped board setup as a cruiser/fuck around board now, but still mainly ride 8,5s. i recommend the fat boards, theyre super fun
i have ridden a couple 8.8 boards. all of them were Love'n'skate boards. really enjoyed the size and the shapes. my fliptrick game isn't strong but i didn't struggle with the decks at all.
If the edge is sharp edge where you hung up its the conical wheel. It happens to me quite a bit 56mm up. On the brick volcano at lynch family skate park.
That's why I switched back to classic shape
14.75 is a lovely wheelbase. my 8.62 krooked has it and im in love with it
