      It’s honestly a very different situation but I would say it showcases the differences between the women all the more starkly and Catelyn looks all the worse. Yes Catelyn was much younger but she was not in love with her husband. She was not even engaged to him originally. She knew him for a few nights and had been married days when he left and apparently “fathered” Jon snow. Rhaenys and Corlys were thought in Rhaenys mind to be a love match. That they loved each other from the start. Corlys also hid it from her which is worse in that he led her to believe he was faithful and their relationship was what it was. Rhaenys has much more reason to hate Alyn on principle than Catelyn has to hate Jon. But Catelyn doesn’t hate Jon really she’s scared and that’s what makes her the lesser person. That she allows her fear her entire life dictate how she treats a child

      Pretty much agree. She has been taunted with her nickname as "The Queen who never was", loved her family so very much, not just husband and her 2 kids, but Viserys, who often didn't see the bigger picture. She truly loved Corlys, (her nursing him back to health, a conversation from earlier in the season when they were in bed and that lovely little scene in the previous episode, giving Corlys food in the rain, and honouring her husband's illegitimate sons, even at the point of just finding out about them. And complimenting them, with the comment about how their mother must have been beautiful. I didn't really care much about her in season 1, (except when Vaemond lost his head and tongue at Daemon's sword), but I think she really stepped up with season 2, which then reminded me of how much her character was pretty much honourable, wise, and loving, just keeping those moments private. Besides which I still don't think she had a chance against both Aegon and Aemond on Vhaegar. She bowed out and sacrificed herself, with grace and honour. RIP. Rhaenys and Maelys.

    • @tracys169
      @tracys169 3 месяца назад +28

      She does, she's an awesome character. Then again, IIRC, for noble families during that era, it's very common for their lord husbands to take up lovers and have natural children (albeit lowborn children). Most of these marriages are arranged so most of them don't grow love for each other. It's different for Corlys and Rhaenys since they did grow to love and care about each other. For the wives, it's not surprising when their husband keep lovers and their natural children, what's surprising for me is how Rhaenys didn't mind Corlys honoring Alyn and raising him up. That's the part that's different. Most noble women (wives/mothers) would feel that this would be a threat to their trueborns (Catelyn Stark, I'm looking at you LOL), but keep in mind, Rhaenys's and Corlys's children are dead at this point and only their grandchildren were around... so she might feel with the war, it might be necessary to keep family closer together rather than apart.

      @@tracys169my thoughts exactly. She didn’t automatically hate him for being her husband’s bastard. And actually commended him for saving his father. Also she probably realizes that it would make her a hypocrite since the first Baratheon was the bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror.
      With Catelyn Stark, she seemed to have forgotten that many bastards of house stark were extremely loyal to their trueborn siblings, and House Stark had a history of caring for them and having them grow up in Winterfell.

      He is not proud, nor does he flaunt his weakness, and if the side chick crosses the line, he gets rid of her without hesitation, remorse, or regret.
      The character Rhaenys obviously understands Men, knows her husband and knows his love is with her and no other. Which is why she chastised him for the treatment of his bastard son.

If you want to be angry at someone over that situation, blame Ned. I would like to say that there’s a lot of factors that go into her arguably flawed decision making. The key one being that the three most important people in the entire war are there: The king, his hand and the prince regent. If she can kill Vhagar then the war is won. If she can seriously injure Vhagar then the war is won. And there might not be a better chance than now to get Vhagar because the Hightower host along with their forth dragon is on the March and their third dragon is still in kings landing with Halaena. So I can see why she decided to risk attacking them.
      Also meleys is an incredibly strong dragon and arguably could best Vhagar in a fair 1 on 1 however of course she is bested by a very sneaky Vhagar attack so maybe not.
      Plus I mean it’s pretty damning for the blacks’ war effort is their first battle ends with one of their strongest dragons running away (even if it is the best move tactically)

    • @animewired
      @animewired 3 месяца назад +38

      Realistically I think rhaenys knew she wasn't going to survive that fight, meleys may be the fastest dragon but she had also just gotten out of a fight with sunfyre meanwhile vhagar was well rested and didn't have any injuries. Meleys most likely would have exhausted herself trying to escape while also dodging any of vhagar’s attacks.
      At best I think Rhaenys was hoping to injure vhagar enough to incapacitate her so someone else could finish the job.

      Short answer: Yes.
      Longer answer: Still yes lol. Alyn of the Hull (and Addam, his younger brother) are the sons of Corlys with Marida of the Hull (a shrewd tradeswoman with multiple ships and a sailor herself). In the book, Corlys claimed that both Alyn and Addam are Laenor's sons (but it's a known thing that they're not, they're Corlys' love child(ren). Not trying to justify what Corlys did, many nobility in that era had arranged marriages. Most of the lord husbands have other women on the side (as well as um, 'natural children'). Corlys was not that different than these people. There were stretches of years when Corlys was busy at war (away from Driftmark, while Rhaenys stayed put to take care of business). Rhaenys obviously expected that Corlys might find some temporary respite (in this case, Marida of Hull, whom he has 2 sons with) for those years but she never quite bothered with it since you know, it was pretty much the 'norm' for the husbands to not stay monogamous...And true to the norm, Corlys didn't intermingle his trueborns with his .... 'lowborn' children. Heck, Rhaenys in the book, didn't even know their existence (allegedly). Rhaenys is pretty special/different since she actually encouraged Corlys to not hide his lowborn children, and to even raise them up. Meanwhile, Catelyn Stark didn't feel secure with Jon Snow, not because he's a 'bastard' but it's more because he was raised amongst the trueborns. Catelyn was fearful that one day, Jon would assasinate his own half-brothers and take over Winterfell. But she can't go against Eddard's wish to raise Jon in their household.

    I feel the actor is a bit too old for the role. Isn't Alyn supposed to be 14-15 during the dance?

    Ok for the record: yes, Rhaenys was better than Catelyn in how she treated her husband’s illegitimate kids with respect buuuuuuuuut: I think TV Cat is a bit more complex. She’s cold to Jon but because she can’t bring herself to love him like a mother she holds herself back from giving him hate because deep down she understands it’s not his fault how he was born (allegedly) and dislikes herself for not being better. This is shown in how she, while very emotionally distraught, bluntly asks him to leave after he says his goodbyes to Bran. I think thats the best she can do much of the time which isn’t great but it’s understandably human.
    But book Cat? GIRRRRLLLL shut the @&$” up with that “Jon? It should have been you.” BS. You’re gonna be mad at Jon for something he can’t control but STILL ride your hubbies meat even tho it’s really HIM (allegedly) you should be mad at??? It’s like she took all the hatred and frustration she had at Ned and thru it onto Jon for YEARS without a hint of self-awareness. Which would make sense for her batshyt crazy sister but not for her.

    Seriously, why does she keep supporting Rhaenyra after what they did to her son? They are just using her and don't care. That's why they had their granddaughters marry Rhaenyra's sons.
    I've always wondered: if Laenor was a dragon rider and was fleeing to the Free Cities, his dragon should have followed him because dragons don't leave their riders. But Laenor's dragon stayed at Dragonstone, which means they actually killed him. The dragon took another rider, Addam of Hull, a dragonseed according to the books.
    In the series, they made us believe that Laenor fled to avoid making the blacks look bad. He killed his husband and immediately married his uncle without any punishment. It's a theory because in the series they make the greens look very bad.

    I'm wondering if it's as cut and dry as "He cheated." The sailor looks around the same age as his half siblings. This may have been in the very beginning of their marriage or just before. Before love and loyalty began to form in their betrothed marriage.

    What arrogance to think I was Rhaenys. I don't think I have enough experience in relationships with others to be this secure. I do believe I have strong knowledge about the self however the ability to spot traits of high EQ. No... I am still Aemond. If I still have projections of jealousy, than likely it means when I leave this bubble, it will probably resurface in my future relationships. BUT this is fiction. Perhaps there are some people that would react this way? Could you provide concrete examples of a healthy person acting this way in real life??

      The show universe is different from the books but Velaryons don't appear in the show.
      Black people are in westeros in the books but they're people of Summer Isles descent and some were minor characters. There were some black people in the Brave Companions in the books. There were also black people who were dancers at Joffrey's wedding.
      GOT did have black characters too as Grey Worm, Missandei, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Salladhor Saan, Areo Hotah were black in the show. They weren't described that way in the books. So black characters didn't start in HOTD but we're in GOT.
      The black characters in the books don't appear in the show. Some characters like Chataya, Alayaya, Sarella Sand, Jalabhar Xo, Quhuru Mo, Kojja Mo, Moqorro and Brown Ben Plumm.
      Moqorro is a red priest who Tyrion meets and he plays a role in the last book.
      Alayaya is the daughter of Chataya and she was the one Cersei has beaten because she thinks Tyrion she is Tyrions whore and later on Bronn sleeps with her.
      Sarella Sand is one of the sand snakes so she is a daughter of Oberyn Martell. There are 8 sandsnakes in the books. The show only had 3 of them and they're better in the books, the show ruined them.
      Brown Ben Plumm said he is part Summer Islander and he is from House Plumm who also have Targaryen Blood in them.
      Fire and Blood has a character called nettles who is described as brown. She is part of the Dance of the Dragons so we don't know if HOTD will show her as she hasn't been confirmed yet.
      So yes, black people exist in both the shows and books. You need to rewatch GOT as I listed black characters in GOT. They're definitely there.

      There's a Summer Islander Prince named Jalabhar Xho who's in King Robert's court and is still alive in the main book series. Also there's two Black dudes in Danaerys council. "Brown" Ben Plum who Danaerys dragons take a liking and would fly on his shoulders to sit. He said it's because he's part Valaryion, summer islander and Dothraki. Also when Jamie and Brienne are caught by the Brave Companions, there'd at least one Summer Islander/Black guy with them. Also the sailors who shipped Danaerys from Pentos to Mireen were summer Islanders. Black people are in the story. You just have to read the books
