    50 years ago it was customary to rotate the stub shaft 180 degrees whenever we got into the finals on Gs and Hs. One of the reasons CAT went to high drives after the H was the weakness caused by the blade loads being transferred to the final drives. The track frame wishbones and stub shafts must handle the full trust of the blade. The stub shafts would get bent slightly back.causing alignment problems throughout the finals assembly.

    • @Jpaydirt

      I was worried about that on the right final last time I pulled it, but it was straight as an arrow , guess it depends on how badly an operator abuses it

    People who said completely remove the nut know nothing about being mechanic and being safe. They fail to understand how many tons of pressure being applied and when it comes off or explodes it will fly across lot or shop. Also fails to understand sure one way to get killed

      @jeremygrubb1434 2 месяца назад +4

      Exactly right plus if you don’t get hurt there is your ram press tools that is going to get the ever living crap out of it but most times fitting get broken off and there you are with stuff tore up like old spoke wheels on older semi’s I’ve seen nuts take them all off then windows get knocked out dents get made underwear gets soiled 😂😂 because people won’t listen

    • @VinniePepperoni
      @VinniePepperoni 2 месяца назад +2

      The nut stays in place with a gap due to stored energy that could kill a mechanic if the nut were removed completely while the gear is under a active pull by the hydraulic puller

    • @jefftheaussie2225
      @jefftheaussie2225 2 месяца назад +2

      I don’t understand why people couldn’t see why Jeff left the nut on either. They probably have never pulled anything off a taper and seen how it will fire off when it lets go. There is a lot of stored energy there. The same thing with the retainers on a spider truck wheel, they go like big bullets if the nut is not left on loosely.

      @@jefftheaussie2225 When I worked at truckstop we had guy who thought it was fun see how far wedges will fly. Watch wedges hit the wall and take small chucks of concrete out. He stopped doing that after wedge bounced off his hammer and nailed him in the leg. Front part right into the bone

    Well Done Mr Jeff. Glad you explained what your doing and why, so the keyboard mechanics,
    Who obviously never pulled a CAT sprocket understand now, maybe?
    Those splines looked GREAT. I've seen some in Bad Shape.
    Patently waiting for next Full Feature Film.

    hey jeff looks like too much fun,dont know if youve had the pleasure of doing one of the recoil spring on a 9h man now that will get your attention the cup on the end of that thing broke and let the spring expand way more than normal. Had to build a spring comppresor out of some 2" bridge bolts grade one zillion fine thread,had three monkeys @ 48"pipe wrench with a 10' cheater pipe on there that 900# spring is hell to smash ,had to shrink it down to get it out of the hole so we could put in the new cup we had that thing so tight it was trying to pull the threads on that bridge bolt, if that tBing would have come loose you would have probably found it up by your shop and im in southern nm man what a job wont ever forget that one, wish you all the luck on your project hope you dont have to ever do that one again😊

    Great content. Brings back memories of when I used to work on cats. Every thing you said rings true. Especially the nut gap when popping the sprocket. I also remember the fella who taught me telling me to never touch the metal seal face on those duo cone seals with bare hands because something about acid on your skin will attack the seals mating surface over time and cause them to seep out from deterioration of the surfaces. I always remembered that. Also, I never got used to the bang when those sprockets finally popped loose, a bit unnerving, and made me jump every time. Lol.

    Just started seeing those type of seals turn up on the zf axles on the loaders i occasionally work on, seem far better than the rubber type. hopefully less vulnerable to trash/wire being pulled into them too.. when it gets wrapped round the axle and the operators never bother to clear it out (the #1 reason for axle seals failing on equipment i work on)

    Jeff, while we did'nt get a good look at the duo cones they did not look to bad, they are likey where the water got in but are they the fault, might you have a bent dead shaft? Yep ther is a Tons fprce to install the sproket but there is a spec for how far the sproket spline protrudes from the hub spline this is more important, agree with your technique, that is the way to seat any taper.👍

  • @HaydenIngram
    @HaydenIngram 2 месяца назад

    As many D9’s you got you should get the duo cone seal installer…. Also I use window cleaner to install the seal, guess there’s no wrong liquid I’ve seen starting fluid used.

    The only way I knew how to set the castle nut was to tighten down your sprocket was to tighten that castle nut as tight as you can with a 6-foot bar and back it off one tooth. I could never find a torque standard, use a 6-foot bar, what if you weigh 300 lbs or you weigh 150 lbs on a 6-ft bar. starting out wrong and then backing off a tooth. I just took it that you couldn't get it too tight. And tight was better than loose. As crazy and stupid as that sounds I never had a problem on d7s.

    Great videos! Thanks for creating and sharing! I used to have two 46A D8H’s. Always prayed I’d never have to pull sprockets or junk out the finals. I often found water condensation or water intrusion in the powershift transmissions but never found any in the finals but then again, they never leaked or needed any added. Has your D-9 been ran in standing water? Are they vented through the bevel gear compartment? Just curious. Thanks again!

    • @Jpaydirt
      @Jpaydirt  2 месяца назад +1

      You must be new around here LOL yup i run in a lot of water, final is vented on the top of the bevel case, comes up between the two heavy plates that seperate the bevel gear and the ripper mount plate

      Ok. Thanks! I’ve been watching on and off a few years. I’ll try to catch up. Just wondering, what if you’d mix isopropyl alcohol into the water polluted oil then drain it and try to heat it to boil off the water/alcohol then reuse the oil? I’ll bet whatever incoming water has dirt in it and is hard on everything including the duocone oil seals.
