      Please never be one of those "anime/cartoons/fanart is not art" teachers. I think the trend toward "photo realism" has a very negative influence on a lot of artists. They feel like their art is crap if it "doesn't look perfect." Art isn't just about making pictures of things that look exactly like things. It can be about color, or movement, or visually expressing emotion. Not everyone will be good at everything. Find the art that fits you.

      I don't know, I disagree with that on a partial level. I know as least right now I can't do that but it gives me some motivation to try harder, even if I never get to that level it will have improved my attention to detail. Also it seems to short circuit my type A personality, I KNOW that is world's above my level so while I feel challenged to try and pay attention, I don't feel badly when mine doesn't look the same.

    • @hazel1834
      @hazel1834 3 года назад +18

      I fullheartedly agree with you! However, I do think that studying realism, specifically highlights, shadows, and proportions, can actually help you find your preferred art. I remember when I was younger I would try to focus only on “anime,” and it ended terribly. I hated my art and didn’t draw for many years. Now, studying facial proportions, I have found I like a semi-realistic style, and I’m working on improving it! I believe that any art is art, but some is better quality than others. Honestly, seeing only realism bores me, and I don’t appreciate the techniques as much because it isn’t new.

    The part about the art teachers hit home for me. I was always told when growing up ill never be good at this or that. Art was one of them, however it was always commented on things that aren't my style. My art work is always very textural and made out of different things rather than always drawing and painting. I love making my own felt into art and I am learning how to dry out flowers to use for pieces. I just finished customising my own shoes. My advise is learn about your own style or what you enjoy doing the most.

    I think I was lucky enough that the two art teachers I had in school where supportive of my art. They were the only ones who supported me and knew that my family didn’t. A lot of the time they stopped me from giving up when I wanted to because of family/parents. We have a creative background, my mother used to draw, my grandmother and great grandmother as well, yet the only support I got was from art teachers or my grandmother (but I hardly saw her.) Even now I struggle with being supported for my art, but I push through since it’s who I am and I would be a lot worse off if I gave up on what I love.

    Artists aren't perfect. It's so true!! I think as artists we need to be there for each other instead of bringing each other down. And the ones that want to slam other artist don't listen to them. Their opinions aren't valid. It's hard but we are all unique and talented in our own way. Thank for this video Chloe! You are awesome!

    My sleep has been all sorts of messed up now for a long time. My body's favourite is to not be able to sleep until 4, then, because it loves life and can't handle missing out, wakes me back up at 6!... every.single.day. Then, I stay up until about 10 and finally am able to pass out from exhaustion. I will then sleep until 2-4pm and start my day, only to try falling asleep again only 8 hours later.
    See this would be just a fun little quirk if I didn't have a child to take care of. So some days I definitely just stay up.

    Tip for those getting into realism: A way I found that helps with learning shading is doing lines on shadows and go over the darker parts with lines in a different direction and darker more different and so on to help understand how the shading is on things

    It always surprises me when people say that they Art teachers were terrible at teaching. My art teachers were incredibly supportive of the classes. One was really engaged in letting us do what ever we wanted and would go an extra mile to make it possible. The other one was good at constructive criticism. We were once encouraged to draw a scary scene and the scariest thing I thought to do was to paint a lot of blood and chopped off limbs. Anyway he encouraged me to go in a different direction and that scary did not necessarily mean dark colours and blood. (I was quite young back then).

    You're my favorite art RUclipsr because you show the struggle, it makes me realize that learning these new forms of art or craft is a process and I won't just pick something up and be amazing. So many other channels only show the end result and cut out the "happy little mistakes" =] Thank you for sharing yourself this way, it has reawakened my love of art.

    I just read somewhere that you should make a list of things and of people you care about so when like you see some really nice skirt or something but you don't care about sewing, you can buy a similar one or commission one. If a person that isn't on your list puts you down you can pretty much ignore it because why should you care, they aren't on the list. And if you do care you can set to getting better for example at drawing but if you don't care about drawing but about art then go buy those pretty prints or whatever and support artists while you're at it :) ( I do hope this makes at least like a tiny bit of sense, it has helped me overthink less when people I don't care/don't like try giving me a hard time or just like generally useless overthinking)

    The idea that one person honestly thought you were married because a dude was spotted in some of your videos, is so weird to me. Do these people forget that brothers are a thing? Or male relatives of similar age in general? Guy friends, anyone?
    It's like when a show based around animals shows different characters of the same species and people go: "They must be either related or a couple!"

    "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." -Hemingway
    Now I don't give a rats petooty about being noble, but this is the quote that changed my life. It inspired me to write a full novel, write and *PUBLISH* 8 short stories in even more, seperate short story anthologies, some of which I won a spot in through a contest, and some of which I have been, and continue to be paid for. I went on to also not only be more confident in my art, but the growth to time passed ratio went way up because I was so much more focused on improving than I was on what anyone else was doing. It helped me wrap my mind around the concept of appreciating the art other people make without the envy. It helped me realize that if I sit and do nothing but complain that I'm not as good as they are, I never will be. If I instead use that time to practice, and use their work to influence mine, I won't just be as tehcnically skilled as they are, I'll become more skilled than they were when they created the thing I let myself get jealous over. Sure, they may also grow, but that's completely irrelevant.
    I really hope this helps someone as much as it did me. I'm in my late 30s and it took until my mid 20s to not hate my art, and only in the past year or two have I been genuinely proud of my work as a whole. It is such a nice feeling that I want everyone to feel it; and if you keep your eyes on your own page, so to speak, you have no choice but to improve.

    Yes, don't let anyone take that away from you. Comparison is the thief of joy. Try not to compare what you like to do to someone else. I was very proud of some simple drawings, then I looked at other's drawings and felt that my accomplishments weren't that great. Don't lose that joy.
