- The AirTV 2 is a great way to watch local channels on Sling TV. Many cord-cutters wish they could watch local channels on Sling TV and opt for a more expensive service to get them.
The AirTV 2 device could be an easy solution to this problem, when paired with an over-the-air antenna. Sling often runs promotions offering the device, and we tested it out to see what it’s like.
If you like Sling, and wish they had local channels, watch our AirTV 2 review to see if it’s the solution you need to save money.

What’s one feature you wish Sling TV would add?
More local broadcast channels, but alas, they would most probably raise their prices if they added any more. I'm presently with RUclipsTV and so far am vey happy, even though it's also pretty expensive.
@@louisd95714 Yep, they would have to raise their rates if they added locals. Broadcast retransmission fees run ~ $20 a month and those get passed on to customers regardless of which service you choose. That's a big reason why we recommend using an over-the-air antenna if you're able. 🙂
I need to dvr some shows on locals, can I do that with sling, and also, I have 4 tvs to work with.
what antennas work best with sling tv?
Feature add: The ability to reskin the local channel guide. TOO icon based.
PSA: The "included antenna" delivered with airTV 2 bundle is dollar store quality. Serious fail and downright experience killer.
One of the reasons we just left YTTV for Sling Blue was the ability to integrate our new HDTV Antenna Channels (53) into the TV Guide. My wife is technically challenged and the option to only use one remote for all our channels is very important. Wish we had gone with an antenna when we cut the cord a year ago. Our AirTV 2 was super easy to set-up and configure. We placed on top of our AT&T Router/Modem, so we connected it with an ethernet cord. Oh, the other 2 reasons we left YTTV: Price and ability to get History channel (wife's must have).
I really like Tablo since it has better dvr functionality and customer support. Thanks for your video on AirTv and looking forward to more money saving tips 😀
Finally, a great review ! tks
I really liked using something like this when I had Sling tv very cool they have this.
Great video, even I could understand. I will make the move from YTTV to Blue Sling and pray everything goes well!!!!!
Thanks for the review folks.
If I were a Sling subscriber, I would definately use this device.
For reasons I've mentioned before, I won't use an antenna here in Florida.
I would like to hear more information about video and sound quality though, just in case my situation were to change.
Yep, it's really a decent way to integrate your locals into your guide with Sling. For sure, in a situation like yours we get that it wouldn't work well for you given your location. 🙂 On audio/video quality, they top out at some 1080p for video, audio is 2.0.
Thanks for another great informative video!!
Anytime!🙂
Great video!
Awesome thank you guys!
Anytime!
I have a question. I am looking to get an Air TV 2 and wanted to know if you can watch the local channels even if the internet is out with a Air TV Mini? I read if you use the sling tv app you must have internet for it to work. Thanks!
instead of a stand alone external hard drive for the DVR holdings, can you use a mini PC that has a second SSD hard drive as the defacto external hard drive?
Can you watch live tv from your phone or pc or is it only Recorded content?
Do you know if the airtv requires you to connect the rabbit antenna or wifi? I don't understand.
I've successfully connected the attic antenna to my AirTv 2 and able to get my local channels. However, connecting the recommended 2TB Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not recognized. Is there a reason it says it's not connected and how do I fix it. I formatted the Seagate to wipe out any data that was on it, using the "Disks app" in my Ubuntu 23.10 desktop.
I've used the AirTV2 predecessor for a few years now but it's USB port failed to detect a/the external HD. 3 months ago, I bought an AirTV2, and set it up pretty much the same way we did AirTV, for some reason, every day or two, my router said it lost connection to the AirTV2 or AirTV2 lost connection to the HD. We had to re-install and format the HD once every 2-3 days. After 2 weeks we returned it and have been reluctant to buy another unit. If everyone else has good luck with it, maybe my experience was an isolated one and I should give it a try again.
So I can record local channels to the Sling cloud without using an external drive?
Thanks for the information. I didn't realize it would work with a free Sling account, I thought you had to have a paid one which is one of the reasons I bought a Tablo instead.
Oof, sorry to hear that. We didn't fully realize that either until we bought it ourselves.
@@FrugalRules That’s ok, I like my Tablo.
I just use digital TV antenna to get my local channels directly off the air. It cost $ 3. One time investment. I don't need Sling to be the middle man.
I live far away from local towers that getting channels with an over the air antenna iffy. Mainly only one channel strong.
Great video John and Nicole! I am about to dump my DirecTV subscription after taking the Sling/AirTV/Storage drive plunge. My question is - can I set up Sling or AirTV to record recurring episodes of your favorite program, or do you have to do it on a weekly basis as the Sling guide updates?
Good question. Sling itself does, for the cable channels. AirTV doesn't as it only records over-the-air channels. You'll need to set those manually.
I have Slingtv and love it..
Local channels I have $16.00 antenna from Amazon slapped on my window..Not complicated..
Nope, not difficult at all. 🙂
How do I stop the buffering on the external hard drive when using the airtv , I already tried shutting down my laptop and I pad thanks
Hi Mona. AirTV support recommends a few options at this link: www.airtv.net/help-how-to/articles/buffering-video.aspx
If that doesn't work, you can reach out to Sling customer service for support. Just Google Sling Customer Chat and the option to call or chat will pop up.
Thanks for the info! I’m a happy Recast user but I know I’ll have to switch at some point. Any new news on Recast support?
Of course! Sadly, no update. We'd operate as if once it goes out on you then you're out of luck, unfortunately. They claim they're supporting it until 2026. Ours went out on us several months ago and is useless now.
@@FrugalRules Thanks!
In the 70s that reset pinhole would be a big clunky rocker switch.
Can anyone tell me whether you can pause and rewind channels (Sling channels with their 50 hours of DVR and/or OTA Channels with an external hard drive)?
Yep, you can do that.
The sling TV app works just an antenna or do you have to have the air TV device I use Roku devices at my house connected to my TVs
The AirTV allows you to record, along with a hard drive, and get locals through Sling.
I just set up mine but am having a major issue. It works as designed, however, When I fast forward, for some reason or another instead of fast forwarding the intended video, it seems to want to fast forward on a different channel instead of the video I am intending to watch. It yen switches to the oter channel it wants to fast forward. It also intermittently stalls, and I'm using a brand new storage drive, which was recommended to use by the makers of AirTV2 I tried this on both a Samsung TV and Firestick, and also using different remotes. Is it something i am doing wrong or do you think mine is defective?
Hey Louis. That sounds like a problem with the AirTV2 vs. something you are doing. You may want to reach out to Sling customer support and see if they have a fix for the issue. You could try updating the firmware if you haven't already done so. Here's a link to an article that explains how to do that: www.sling.com/help/en/troubleshooting/airtv-help/update-airtv-software
They may have you reinstall the device and if they determine it's defective, hopefully they can process an exchange for you. You can try visiting this page and then clicking the chat icon to start chatting with Sling. www.sling.com/help/en/troubleshooting/airtv-help/airtv-setup?matchtype=&campaign=SLGD_ACQ_GO_Wrestling_PMAX&group=&cvo_keyword=&ns=1&SLGD_ACQ_GO_Wrestling_PMAX&gclid=CjwKCAjw9J2iBhBPEiwAErwpef525BfGjImO0-p1u0_VuW9GkoDA8YerWIws_Hbqfp5QfPzZGariPRoCTlkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
You can also call them at 1 (888) 308-0784. Let us know how it turns out!
@@FrugalRules Thank you for this information. I am still in testing mode, so am hoping the first try was a glitch. Since then I've tried other various other manual and scheduled recordings and they appear to be functioning normally. I also rebooted the AirTV2 just in case.
I need to dvr some local programming, can i do that on sling,? I also have 4 tvs to work with
Yep, that's certainly possible! Here's our video on how to do it: ruclips.net/video/bId_ySBIpBw/видео.html
Sling blue total tv deal with a working airtv2 is the closest thing you have to a basic classic cable package.
Can you use sling free with air tv?
Yes you can. 🙂
Can you get the local channels on a guide without a paid sling subscription
Yep, that's definitely possible. You can watch this video of ours that walks a bit more through it: ruclips.net/video/bId_ySBIpBw/видео.html
I already own a TABLO - not compatible with anything. Want to set up a PLEX server? It requires an HD Homerun. Want to incorporate locals into your Sling? Then it must be an AirTV 2. Isn't it wonderful how nothing is compatible? Wouldn't you think that anything with TV tuners would work? Nope.
3:51 Guy's, if you don't want to use Wi Fi, can you set it up without a smart phone? I just want to hard wire it.
Good question. Yes, there is an ethernet port on the back of it. We've not tested it ourselves, but it is there.
Where is the best place to purchase this?
It's currently not available from Sling, for the short-term. Until then, it's available at Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart.
Update: the device is back to being available on Sling.
My understanding is that AirTV still needs broadcast channels from an antenna. At best AirTV is just a convenience.
How does this compare to tablo?
Great question. Tablo isn't tied to a specific service like the AirTV is, and you must go through its own app to access it. You must also pay a monthly fee to access Tablo's advanced features, such as a guide beyond 24 hours. The AirTV can either work with a paid or free Sling account. It also allows you to integrate local channels into a Fire homepage. We have a video coming in the near future of how to do that and what it looks like.
Look forward to the video on this
What is a “Fire Homepage”? Is that related to an Amazon Fire stick? I have a Roku plugged into a non-smart TV.
I have a Tablo and its a good alternative to get live tv with dvr functionality
Thanks for your video. I had the device for some time under one of their promos from many months ago. It was in a box stored. Thought I needed a subscription to utilize the device. Glad to see if tall worked out after a firmware update for the free account (old Sling account) --working so far. got my local channels !!!1
I’m left Hulu with live tv it was too expensive

A disclaimer.................This won't help reception because it still depends on an antenna.
As we said in the video, an antenna is obviously needed for this to work. We also never claimed that this would improve reception. 🙂
There are 3 major drawbacks for sling tv. 1. Their DVR is completely stupid and it needs a complete overhaul. It should be unlimited storage. 2. All the locals should be included with the packages. 3.They don't carry either Max or Cinemax. I wouldn't go with sling tv unless they fix these issues.
We get the points, but they would all do one thing - drastically increase the monthly cost of Sling. Adding locals alone would bring an added cost of ~ $20 a month. They're not a premium service. For those that don't want a premium service, but still want *some* sought-after channels it works great.
More locals
We'd love yo see that as well. Unfortunately, that'd come with a fairly significant price hike.
Unfortunate timing on your video.. setup hasn't worked on the devices for a week now.
Metv
Another device (AirTv) to purchase? NOPE.
FINALLY!!!!! now the big question I got utube tv which is better ????????
Depends on if you need channels on youtubetv that aren’t on sling. If you can go with sling you will save money.
