Ive trapped hogs for over 20 years and sale them. I have a couple of tips for you that might help. I learned the hard way cattle panels allow a lot if not all small hogs to escape which creates trap wise young hogs which hurts all trappers. Big hogs can also jump and climb out of cattle panels and big boars can just tear a hole and walk out (Ive had all of these happen multiple times). I added rebar to an old trap to stop busting through the sides and an over hang on the top to stop climbing out. I was told by an agricultural extension agent at Texas A&M that tarps around the trap will help that but I haven’t tried that. I just fixed the problems with more permanent solutions. Your idea of shooting the trap to spring it will work but you better be real close and ready to dispatch those hogs fast because they will go NUTS!!! Like I said, I sale the hogs I catch to recoup some cost so i move in quiet and “try” not to make them any crazier than possible. I build only utility panel corral traps now that are 8 panels round with a feeder inside and 2 doors. They are expensive but will last a lifetime. Hope this helps! Thanks for all the info! I love getting tips from folks that have seen it all. We are hoping to give it a run soon now that we got the gate installed. I figured we will have to upgrade sooner or later on the panels. What height are your panels and do you build them or buy them? I’m thinking my next trap will have two doors as well. My new corral trap is made with eight utility panels that cost $55 each at Tractor Supply. The panels are 5’ tall, 16’ long and have 4”x4” holes. It has double guillotine doors and a feeder inside. I have a single trip wire that closes both doors. I plan on adding a cellular remote camera and trip wire soon. The pandemic has hog prices real low so not much incentive to spend a bunch more money right now. I will try and post a video of the new trap soon. Good Luck in the war on hogs!

The Handy Hunter hey Brother! In Texas there are state licensed buyers. The hogs are all killed for meat that is shipped overseas. I was told there is only one processing plant open in Texas due to the pandemic so the prices are real low. I wont get rich selling them but it helps pay some farm expenses. I have really enjoyed your videos and Ive learned a lot about solar! Like your set up. I hope to go down this week and set up my first cell camera. I think I may try and post a video of the new trap design and trigger mechanism. Its pretty good I think for us guys that dont have the big bucks to spend on a cellular trip. Anything I can do to help let me know. I have experience snaring hogs also both foot and neck, night stalking with bow, etc. Ive been fighting this battle for a long time😁
If you place heavy duty wire mesh fencing on the inside of the cattle panels it would prevent losses. We use a mesh here in Tasmania called wallaby wire (to fence out wallabies and kangaroos) that is a woven wire similar to chicken wire, but is made from 3mm (1/8”) wire with holes around 30mm (1 1/4” across) and comes in various heights to 2m (6’) high. It would need to be clipped onto your solid panels at each post, but is incredibly strong, and NOTHING will get out!

The Handy Hunter - yes I used cattle panels as well. I’d catch 15-25 at a time using the guillotine style door. I put mine on a trip line but I like the shooting idea too.
Dave Arnold..... I like your trap. To keep hogs from jumping out of the lower exiting panels, you could increase the height of your side panels by cutting narrow strips from a full size panel and wire the strips to the height of the already installed lower panels. You should get several narrow strips from a full width panel. Might require slightly longer posts but should help with keeping hogs from jumping out of the lower (shorter) walled sections. less cost than adding a full width panel.

Stringing barb wire around the top to increase effective height seems a recipe for spaghetti. Panicking animals will ignore barriers that hurt, ever noticed how they smack directly into trap perimeters at full speed. Repetitively? Pork is best shredded once dead. For top wires plain wire will work just as well without the additional injuries. Strung around the inside of the T posts will provide some barrier. Using the holes might destabilise the rigidity of the trap as the leverage of a big pig on top of the posts will be significant. Tie backs would prevent that. It might also be prudent to string vertical wires from the panel mesh top to the upper wires or have rigid wire etc. spacers to reduce the chance of pig squeezing between those top wires. These modification ideas would need testing to check validity, and altered where necessary.

Pretty smart doing it and not going overboard. I would imagine you will be on those pigs within seconds, ARs in hand to lay to waste. If what you have does not work perfectly, like you said, just build up the walls, and you can always make the pen stronger. Man, you are gonna have a blast with that thing. With I could be there!!!!!!!!!
It is amazing how destructive they can be! I’ve seen them go under and over when they get trapped. Better be ready for anything when you approach trapped hogs!!!
So far I love your design except for your door shooting method . Redesign the door method. Probably use a quiet ONE WAY door . Once you shoot, you have educated the hogs on outside to avoid your trap. They are intelligent. Also , instead of wire , it may work better with strong fiber net . I believe the softer the material, the more calm they remain and more and more continue to join in. I would also use wood posts which is more natural to their habitat . Man made metal may also scare them. Lots of improvements can be done. Good luck getting rid of these invasive pests.
I hope you've upgraded to either a C style trap that doesn't need you to watch the trap or a cell phone alert & gate drop system??? I'd be intrigued if you've upgraded the panels as well... there's someone who added chicken wire to the first 3' & the suggestion of cutting a 4' panel in half & adding it to the existing systems a good one
Yep, it’s better to double layer the bottom to keep the small ones in. We just took our trap down and will move to a better location. C traps work well too!

It’s great! I want to build one more. Very little kick so its good for followup shots and hits hard. Feels just like shooting a 556 (because of the casing being the same).

I wish I could help you but I don’t have any experience with them. I do know that my Bigfoot cams work well on very little att signal so although you say you don’t have att it might still work. Verizon is best at my farm for cell signal but att works better for cell cams because of their cdma network (more common everywhere). Good luck and let me know what you find.
Oh dogs the problem you're going to have is seeing them jump right over them 4 foot panels no problem at all There is a way to do the door by bending two of the panels inward so they can squeeze thru it to get in but it closes the wire behind them once they are in so you do not have to do a thing once they are in they are trapped but I have seen them jump right over that four foot fence even when some of them were 350 pounds they jumped right over it on the farm With the panels bent inward leave them open a little so they get use to coming in and out then slowly make the gap smaller until they have to squeeze thru it then get trapped once they get in leaving a trial of corn so they follow it right into the trap You will probably want to add more panels to make them 5-6 foot high as a way to keep them in there as I never would have believed it had I not seen it for myself one night when about a 350 pound hog jumped right over that 4 foot barb wire fence
@@bshadrick A muddy moat would probably attract more hogs like a swimming pool after the schools let out for summer LOL They love laying around in the mud as the mud protects them from bugs and stuff Some I have killed were so packed with mud it was like trying to cut thru rock to get thru the hide with a knife
I believe you! There’s plenty of RUclips videos showing hogs nearly clearing even 6ft fences! We figured we would try this first and then upgrade if needed. @@TheHandyHunter I was sitting out there one night watching a bunch of hogs that showed up and did not realize the video was not turned on then saw one about a 350 pound hog squat down behind the fence and wondered what it was doing It jumped up in one leap and looked like it cleared that four foot barb wire fence by more than a foot from a dead stop squatting on the ground LOL I was like Dohhhh!!! the video was not on LOL I sure hope I catch that next time on video as that was the most amazing thing I have ever seen after seeing that hog jump that high starting from a squat position

shooting the door trigger sounds cool and all, but I feel like the risk of missing the one chance before they scatter is to great. If you insist on a mechanically operated door that you trigger from a set location would a long length of small diameter aircraft cable not do the trick? Just give it a yank…then you can trigger it anytime day or night with guaranteed success
Here is my questions to ask you, Before you are doing a Hog trap do you need to have a permission from the city or you just doing without a permission ? in the united states you can't do anything without a permission from the city
why not build you a remote control trigger, that way you want spook the hogs as bad with a gun shot. I have one that will work from 300' away and it's cheap to build. just a thought

The cattle panels will work fine other then and feeder size pig 40 lbs or less can get thru! Line the bottom with 24 in hail screen! Good luck!

I really like ur hog trap....but I was wondering do u know how to program a reolink camera to trigger a latch to close the door?
I do not but I do know there is a way to trigger using a cellular or RF control box…I’ve just never used them.
Good Job. Just FYI we skip putting on the clip and just use heavy gauge trappers wire I bought on Amazon!

You can cut those panels lengthwise you are using and add to the top of existing panels

what diameter is the trap, how many 16' panels
Ours is about 25’. If I remember correctly we used 6 or 7 panels and I remember having a little left over. Hope that helps and good luck!

It’s not hard at all to hit the 8in target at less than 100 yards. At nighttime we use IR with no problem. Even a little .22 will set it off.

We don’t need permission to trap. Hogs are a non-indigenous species and you can kill as many as you’d like. There is no limit and no season.
That would depend on the state you live in. In Texas, you don't even need a hunting license to hunt them. They want them gone!

I wish I had a hog problem, they’re fun to shoot! They’re 2 miles away from my land though so maybe they’ll move my way. I want to blow them up with my .50.
