A Look At The FalconEyes F7 Mini LED Light

  • The FalconEyes F7 mini LED light has obvious video and Vlogging uses but I wanted it (mainly) for stills. Flash has its uses but cab give unpredictable results. Where will the shadow be? it is too harsh? The FalconEyes fits the hotshoe like a flash but has the advantage of constant light output and thus predictable results- albeit with a sacrifice of sheer power. Thanks. You just persueded me to upgrade from the magnesium powder. I have never really got on with flash and this seems a great solution to many lighting situations.

      I found some magnesium powder in a cupboard in a newspaper office I used to work in. It still worked and was a lot of fun, light, smoke and all. I wouldn't want t use it for lighting but it's a lot more fun than LEDs or flash 😀

    Hello David,
    Still shooting with my EM10 Mk2 (following your review and recommendation, among others) but looking to add some light to a portrait or two. The F7 might help; is it available through your Amazon shop? I looked but couldn't see it.
    Thanks

      I need to put it on the shop - been so busy I can't keep up. Thanks for the head-up. Your E-M10 MkII, still just one of the very best Micro Four Thirds cameras. I don't see anything coming up to improve on it as an all round tool.

    Would it be a good idea to use it for insect macro photography?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  3 года назад

      Yes, provided you have enough distance between you and the subject to get the light on it. With my Olympus 60mm macro lens at !:1 I get an exposure at 200ISO of about 1/125/th at f/4 with the lens held at the optimum position, f/2.8 with it mounted on the camera. 1:1 means a front glass to subject distance of around 80mm. A flash would be more powerful, of course but unless you are photographing moving subjects the LED is much easier to work with. I have a ring flash but hardly use it since getting this F7. Given the practicalities of insect photography, you are unlikely to be photographing them while they are buzzing or running around, I guess. At 1:1, even stopped down to f/16 there's zilch DoF, as I'm sure you know.

    You know what I hate the most about lights?
    There's always a new one that comes out that does something neat that I can't do with my other lights that mostly don't get used. So its hard to justify getting another light, even if it would be nice to have.

    Hi +David Thorpe @David Thorpe [I can't get the comment to hyperlink your name...] - can you help me? I am racking my brain trying to find the video of yours in which you show the stage photo of Paul McCartney (?) that was a b+w photo with very high "ISO", but that was an aesthetic that made the shot. Do you know the one I'm referring to?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  4 года назад +1

      It was in a preview video for my channel which got taken down. Any particular reason you wanted to see that shot? It was McCartney and Wings rehearsing at Lympne Castle in Kent, England. I was down there for 4 days shooting with the band.

    • @willjohnsnow
      @willjohnsnow 4 года назад

      @@DavidThorpeMFT Oh, any reason it got taken down? We're doing an informal "lunch n learn" type thing at work about things we're passionate about. I'm doing photography and the classic exposure triangle. If indeed your photo was grainy as I remember, I was going to show it as an example of a high "iso" photo with lots of noise, but nevertheless something that makes the aesthetic of the photo, rather than an artefact to avoid at all costs.

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  4 года назад +1

      @@willjohnsnow The picture was indeed grainy and terrible technical quality - it was Fujichrome 400 rated up to 3200 as I recall. Utterly extreme but I was looking to capture atmosphere and the fun these guys have playing more than anything else. Linda didn't give a monkeys about technical quality of the picture was good, actually. The lighting conditions were....zilch! If you leave a message on my blog, I''ll see if I can sort something out for you. I'd put an email here but probably get spammed out!
