  • Why did God allow "confusing" verses to be included in the Bible? How can sincere people read the same scriptures and arrive at wildly different conclusions about their meaning? Why didn’t God give us His Word in a form that would be clear to every reader?
Dr. David K. Bernard responds by reminding us of what Jesus said about the search for truth and why it is sometimes hidden from those who hear and read the Scriptures.

The disciples KNEW that the NAME of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost was JESUS. There was no debate, argument, confusion or division. Jesus expects us to read the Bible in CONTEXT; He never said for the disciples to "repeat these words", Jesus said to baptize IN THE NAME...and the disciples KNEW THAT NAME, and that is why they all baptized in the name of Jesus Christ

How can man discern what Christ God expects? And is your context and my context the same - as perhaps folks who live in Kazakhstan? Or is context fluid, based on environment and culture?
I don’t recall Jesus saying ‘repeat these words’ on the day of Pentecost…. I also do not see in Matthew where Christ God says, ‘exclude these words as you Go unto all Nations…’. Perhaps there is a context we perceive not in our modern non Jewish mindset and our theological and soteriological precepts misinform us from the Truth that is preserved forever.

Hi David, do you believe that "in the name of" here could possibly be the same as "in the authority of?" Not an actual name of 3 manifestations of one being? Where is that consistency even in the bible? Every epistle shows God and Jesus being separate beings, especially with this being after Jesus's ascension. Jesus doesn't sit on God's throne... he sits on David's throne... a man's throne (Acts 2:29-30). They're not teaching this in apostolic oneness churches... believe me, I know.

Name in those days meant authority. That’s why Jesus prefaced by saying ALL authority has been given to Him in Heaven and Earth. So the disciples recognized the Name because they knew the authority and power in the name.

Funny - Sabellius and his doctrine is technically a Trinitarian doctrine in theological lens… which blurred Father Son and Holy Spirit into modes…
The Dogma of the Trinity - or Trinitarian doctrine - is not as Oneness folks try to make it out to be… most times y’all make it out to be similar to Arianism… and Tri-thesim… Father. Son. And Holy Spirit… One in Essence AND Undivided.
The moment you begin in your dialog splitting up the godhead… you are not talking about the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity… you might find folks saying they’re ’trinitarian’ and they might agree with your splitting up the godhead… but you remain in error - and your presentation is biased and you talk about something you have no understanding in…
Read the Creed as it was hashed out as it became the Universal Symbol of the Faith. I believe in One God - the Father all mighty. Maker of Heaven and Earth, of things visible and invisible. And in One Lord Jesus Christ….

Anyways. This was an awesome teaching. Cleared up some of the answers that I always had about confusing scriptures.
But I did have a question…Can you do an episode on the…”In Isaiah 58, it talks about fasting as “to loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, and let the oppressed go free”
Jesus fasted 40days n 40 nights in the wilderness. N Esther called a fast to set her people free”
The main point Im trying to ask is…where did people get the notion or idea that you fast to make God move and that u can have power for when ur invited to preach at a large gathering such as a conference ?

The people of Isaiah’s day had the same problem as the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. They trusted in empty ritual, apart from the spiritual reality. Real fasting - fasting that is partnered with real repentance, and isn’t only about image - has great power before God (Matthew 17:21). But God sees through the hypocrisy of empty religious ritual, including fasting.

@@mikef6063 - I think I could get onboard with a few of your points… but, if you assert that ALL ritual is empty and hypocritical… then I would say, nay…. Because I would assert how you conduct yourself in approaching God is a rite in and of itself… and it seems to me you think of yourself as having it all together.
Weren’t Hosea and Amos contemporaries where one spoke of ritual, and the other on grace… and perhaps between these two positions the Lord of Sabaoth meets us in the middle tension…
Perhaps you are right in your assessment… the question is - how do you encourage one to move forward by faith and enact on the grace of God already present in the empty ritual… the lip service … and draw them near so they are no longer afar off?

I don’t think many today through out the 42 thousand sects in the Protestant sphere will dispute that there is only one saving name… that ChristGod declared that He had manifested the name of His Father. That there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. All of these statements align with Orthodoxy. Where the problem lies is when folks say the Son is the Father… the Holy Spirit is the Father. The Father is the Son. The Son is the Holy Spirit…. This is the error of Sabellianism. The teachings of Sabellius were, like Arius and Nestorius, were ALL rejected as not congruent with the teachings and Traditions of the Church.
As an Orthodox Christian - I know precisely who is my Lord and my God, and I know precisely who the Lord of Sabaoth is… I also realize that the Theotokos was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and without corruption, Christ God became man and for our sakes, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate… and in the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures. And he ascended into heaven and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.
In every Divine Liturgy, multiple times in fact, we declare and affirm with Oneness of mind … the majestic name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit… notice the wording here… we do not says ‘names’… but the singular name that was manifested by and for the glory of God. Trust you’re well.

God is not the author of confusion. I've always believed that if there is pride in men, that they may be continually bringing up matters to cause confusion, so they can prove themselves enlightened. If God Almighty ordained His word to be written like it is written, then no amount of personal revelation should be added. Let every man settle God's Word in their heart. Gibberish. Matt 28:19 is not confusing. It becomes confusing when one authors a wind of doctrine that is alien to the Church, to Her Teachings and Traditions - you end up like Mar Mari Emanuel. The synoptic Gospels agree. What’s recorded in Mark…. In Mathew… in Luke and continued in Luke-Acts - they all agree in the principle teachings of Christ.
Why I say this is gibberish… the whole three names, three different persons insertions to muddy the waters… is to stuff one’s opinion into the Scriptures to misrepresent what the Dogma of the Trinity states .. into something that it does not say … because we need it to be something it is not - to puff up and vaunt our theological distinction … is not from the Author and Finisher … and His Kingdom that has no end.
If all Scripture is given by the Inspiration of God… AND is profitable for doctrine… then perhaps if we have to explain away verses and not let them stand as they were written… is simply an error… or perhaps one’s fundamentalist bent drives you to drink the deadly things… pick up serpents and scorpions … and to rationalize with your finite mind something that doesn’t need to be messed with in the first place.
The wind is blowing again… just like the days of Arius, Nestorius, and Sabellius … the wind is blowing again.

@@ShyGuy_238 - hi there. Thanks for your reply and for sharing your insight. How do you know that your tradition is superior over another person’s tradition? Are all traditions man made, or is one tradition divinely inspired? How was the Scriptures compiled and vetted? Was it by men? Or have we somehow become Islamic and reduced God down to a Book.. I can’t recall where Jesus left a book? Whereas Muhammad did.
Did the earliest of Christians have a Nelson or a Thompson Chain, or whatever is the favored publisher du jour in the Protestant world today?
How do you suppose the books of the Bible came about - seeing that it wasn’t until the 5th century that we had a Christian canon? The canon was vetted by Council… Councils that are rejected by most Oneness Pentecostals - perhaps you are no different, picking and choosing what you deem appropriate.
Then of course, we should ask ourselves… how do we reconcile where in the Scriptures we see ‘traditions… Traditions… and vain traditions…. Most Oneness Pentecostals tend to view any tradition as ‘vain traditions’ … failing to see their own traditions as traditions .. as they truly are innovations cultivated out of the Holiness movement and the Revivalist period…
Lastly, Oneness Pentecostals speak of ‘apostolic’ as they have something like the gnostics… and yet.. they cannot express what the Apostolic tradition even looks like. Whereas, Orthodoxy has preserved the ancient practices of the Early Church - and this apostolic tradition is a living faith, empowering the believer to progress in their ‘theosis’.
My experiences with most Oneness folk is that that have very limited understanding of the Holy Tradition of Scripture outside of their framework and opinions… they tend to repeat what they think they heard ‘hopped-and-hollered’ at them…without ever critically evaluating their ‘truths and traditions and vain traditions’.
There’s so much more to Apostolic than just Acts 2:38.

@@ShyGuy_238 - fanfiction or outright heretical. For some reason, Twilight books / movies came to mind. Ha. Anyhow, loved your response. When a person is baptized into Christ - they have put on Christ…. This is chanted in Orthodox baptisms - after the newly illumined are baptized by immersion three times face down. The Baptismal Rite is more than just water… it involves an exorcism, anointing oil for ‘burial’, the baptismal pool, which is regarded as the ‘womb’ of the Church… there’s holy chrism oil after baptism where the Church declares ‘sealed’…. and the tonsuring which is one’s first offering to God…
What is the Fullness of the Godhead? What does that mean - in Orthodoxy, we are baptized into Christ… we weigh the gospels more than Luke Acts. And so, Mt 28 19, Mk 16 16, Lk 24 47… are part… and of course we can look into Acts 2 8 10 …
Whole houses were baptized … all is all… we cannot see an exclusion of children in Scriptures. We cannot see a ‘believers baptism age of accountability’ construct in the Actions of the Apostles… ‘Only adults’ ‘no babies’. These positions are an innovation to the faith forged out of anti Roman traditions.
Pentecostals tend to speak of the Early Church…. But, few can tell me much about ancient Judaism, early Christianity - and few know little about the ‘apostolic tradition’. Few seem to recognize that the Early Church had an oral tradition long before it had a written tradition … and may I state that there was also an illustrated tradition as well. We have iconography- which is not art… and they inform the Faithful.
Anyways, I need to wrap up and head for bed… I don’t think Sola Scriptura is solidly sufficient… as the whole counsel of God… we know that books that were vetted as scripture… were circulated with books that were ultimately rejected from the Christian canon. We have prolific writers from the earliest periods of the Church which help us to see how things were… and are and shall remain…
I do not read books deemed heretical. I do have Books that were removed by Reformers - but, I really haven’t read much in them. My personal favorite is Wisdom of Jesus Ben Sirach… which is more practical than Proverbs in my opinion. Good Theology and Soteriology always includes History.
Orthodoxy isn’t ’Roman’ and does not regard Her innovations… somehow, I feel you may already know that - in part.

All Orthodox would immediately reject the heretical…. And would accept the non canonical books as Christian writings.
The books removed by the Reformers - that are in the Orthodox Bible - were Old Testament. The New Testament books are exactly the same. If Martin Luther had his way, I am told, he would have removed the Book of James… why I don’t know… and Revelation.
I wrote about Orthodoxy’s understanding of Baptism and the rites involved in entry into the Church… to addressed the topic of Believer’s baptism - which originates from the Anabaptist - which addressed your question, Can an infant believe the Gospel?

the word trinity is a pagan concept.
    Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭46‬-‭47‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
These scriptures are similar to each other,it’s the same command given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28 :19, where he said, go into all the world teaching them to observe all things, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. The Terminology father son and Holy Ghost are titles , the name of God is Jesus and these titles are his manifestation’s . He is the Father as creator, the Son as regenerator, and the Holy Spirit as comforter.
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
The assertion that this passage of scripture is talking about tree separate persons is synonymous with misunderstanding, as the concept finds its roots in Roman Catholic theology, prior to the ecclesiastical councils convened by the Roman Catholic Church for Biblical canonization. There was no mention of a Trinity until these councils. The term “Trinity” is a pagan concept retained by some Protestant Church, up to the present day.
‭The word 'trinity' appears nowhere in the Bible; the concept was finalized at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE after years of debate.
    Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
‭‭ The word all means everything, including baptism, as per the Bible,
I like how the amplified Bible said it.
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭17‬ ‭AMPC
“And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus and in [dependence upon] His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.”
‭‭ we must be knowledgeable about what we believe because knowledge is power
    Hosea‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

The trinity heresy spews that Father is not Son and not Holy Spirit, and also that Son is not the Father and Holy Spirit, and also that Holy Spirit is not the Father and Son, thereby Willingly delusioning themselves into believing three persons and three wills, but the biblical Truth is God is One and that Jesus is the person of that one True God fully dwelling in the body, Father is Son and Holy Spirit, and Son is Father and Holy Spirit, and Holy Spirit is Father and Son., son is born to us and he shall be called the everlasting Father, the origins of the one who comes out of the Bethlehem Ephratha is of Everlasting to Everlasting, the Father is Spirit, Father is Invisible, Jesus the Visible form of the invisible God dwelling fully in the body as Jesus Christ, the Spirit of Christ Jesus is the same Holy Spirit who is the Father Himself. The person of Jesus has two will the will of the Body aka as a son and the Will of the Father. Jesus is Fully Father(God) and Fully Son(Human).

So as an Orthodox Christian, which means I am Trinitarian, I see in your comment where you’re trying to insert into the Dogma, things you have heard about the Holy Trinity, trying to attack the things others who are mistaken about what the Dogma states about the Godhead… and rationalize and reconcile things that are in what I perceive is your own theology about the Godhead. The Creed states, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - One in Essence - AND undivided. Certainly, there are some teachings in the West and beyond - that try to explain the godhead… as if man can really understand the fullness of the Godhead beyond reciting Col 2 9… if that occurs, I would think we have created God in our OWN image…
The moment one begins to ‘divide up’ the Godhead… we are NOT talking about the Trinity… we are most likely talking about something other than the dogma. And you’re absolutely right - there are heretical variations that are an offshoot from the True Faith.
I trust in God as he leads me into all truth. And I am well enough to allow Him to remain as God. And I am absolutely comfortable with the Scriptures - with how they are written - no need to explain away versus that I can’t reconcile with my own teachings. I use the Creed to ‘check and balance’ my understanding… and oddly, every single verse Oneness folks use to tell me I am wrong, were used in the development in the Creed.
You’re right, folks can be delusional and believe a lie… how do you check and balance your doctrinal positions… to ensure the enemy hasn’t gaslighted you?
Not only do I have the Creed, I have the Church fathers, and other prolific Christian’s writers throughout the ages - who will either confirm or reject my way of thinking…
Folks use the word ‘biblical Christianity’ way too much… it’s a puffery term lacking substance. It tickles the ears of those who are not diligent in their pursuit of Holiness…
As a former Oneness Pentecostal, I used to say such things… then I realized, that often times the folks I was listening to - would add to the word… and to take away from the word… and as long as it was delivered with emotion and so called ‘apostolic fervor’ - folks would be too loud and excited… to be critical. And when one begins to ‘think on these things’…. Suddenly, they are rebellious and not submitted to the pastor.
Where do we see in Scripture, where we are charged to dissect the godhead? We’re not. But, we should know the Faith…. But some things should remain a mystery.
Jesus Christ is Lord - unto the glory of God the Father… I have confessed Him as my King and my God. No man comes to the Father, but through the Son and by the Holy Spirit.
I have a very discriminating palate for my kool-aide… as I want to be very sure…
But, you can know a lot about the Bible… how do you enter into the interior dimension of the faith - purification. Illumination. And unification…. To become one with He who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
      Keep on pressing. - Cuthbert.

Jesus is not God. And he's certainly not one single being who is God. Just read the prayer in Acts 4:24-30 to understand that. Jesus says multiple times that he has a God (John 17:3, John 20:17, Revelation 3:12). Read Revelation 5... who is Jesus taking the book from? The one who sits on the throne, right? Who sits on the throne? Read Revelation 4:8-11. It actually makes less sense than the trinity (which are just inversions of each other, really). The churches are only showing you some of the scriptures to back up their false doctrine. They're Satan's churches. There's some truth in most churches... that's what can trick you.

Denying the Divinity of Christ, lessening Him to a created being like an angel, or merely a good man, is heretical similar to either Arianism or Nestorianism. You can pick and choose verses from the Bible to explain your context, but your doctrinal position places you outside the Christian faith where there is no agreement. Because, there are verses that you will have a hard time reconciling to your teachings where you will either ignore, explain away, or rewrite to match your theology. The Dogma of the Holy Trinity gives us a reference point to begin to understand Godhead, which truly is beyond our understanding… and if we can explain away in its entirety the totality of God - then we have created god in our own Image. Salvation is created when the Son of God, begotten before all ages, is incarnate of the Holy Spirt and the Virgin Mary and Who without corruption became man. Father Son and Holy Spirit - One in Essence AND Undivided.
