This video is the 5th video in the "Improve My Car Sketch" series. The video features a car design drawing by Ronit from India. Ronti did an amazing job creating a drawing of a very elegant sports coupe.
There are several aspects of drawing for car design that are covered in this tutorial. There are many aspects of Ronit's car design drawing that are very well done. His drawing gestures very well. Congratulations to him for doing it so well.
He has included the car's interior and it looks good inside the car. It appears he has added some reflection patterns to the surfaces of the upper and lower. All of these add up to a very dynamic car design drawing.
Areas to improve that can be applied to any car design sketch are how to get the correct wheelbase for this type of vehicle. The proportion of the wheelbase is something many aspiring car designers struggle with. The correct proportion for a car of this type is discussed in the video. Also, overall car design proportions are shown. Ronit's design uses a very long front overhang which can make the car look old.
The video shows what happens to your design when you change the drawing's proportions. A more contemporary design is created first. Then a futuristic design based on a new set of car design proportions is created.
Overall, Ronit did a great job on this sketch. I hope he and everyone that watches can benefit from what I am showing in this video tutorial and improve as they practice the new techniques. While the techniques I am showing can seem quite hard, they can be mastered with the commitment to practice them.
Try taking some of your older drawings and changing the proportions of the designs to see if you can update them and make them look more futuristic.
Be sure to check out all the other videos in the "Improve My Car Sketch" series. Each one is a bit different and offers up some excellent advice in each drawing tutorial. Thanks for watching!

I've heard many people say, in the past, "design for the future," and I've always been annoyed by how useless that advice is. Thank you for actually going through and explaining how one goes about such a thing.

I'm curious. Why did you think that advise was useless? I started doing drawings for the car that would become my first design to get put into production in 1991. The car was released in 1994. If I based the design on what was going on in 1991 it would have never had gotten picked to be produced. There were 7 other proposals it was up against. A big part of your job as a professional car designer is the ability to see into the future. If you're in an advanced studio, that skill becomes even more important. I'm glad this 10 min video was helpful for you to grasp this important concept.

@@howtodrawcars. I say that the advice is useless not because it actually is but because it says nothing about what it means or how to go about it. Your video is the first I have seen that doesn't do that. You go through and describe the things that designers do to design for the future. I've only ever heard people treat it as though it is self-evident-as though every person has some innate concept of the future that they must draw on to design cars.

Got it. Well said. Some people do have that sense and could be unaware that others don't. One very concrete way to make sure your cars look new is to study all the form vocabularies that have come before and never repeat one. I was thinking of doing a video on this. But as I stated in the vid, proportion matters. It's the first of the 3 components of car design.

    Excellent tutorial video, Michael.
However, on the subject of futuristic designs, l found that a pattern historically occurs. And it is that aiming for any Car design beyond 10 to 15 years into the future, gets less accurate when that future arrives.

Richard - Yes, but challenging yourself is the only way to grow. It becomes an exercise in what you want the future to be like.

I don't really like futuristic design too much, i like natural looking designs of today

You do realize the "natural looking designs" of today were futuristic designs of yesterday, right?
