I recently took a long weekend to head up to the Lake District in Cumbria. The idea was to just enjoy the scenery and shoot for fun on my Fuji X100 and my iPhone. I also took the time to make this video to share my journey with photography and what I learned about jumping into freelancing, and how I had to struggle through some hard times.
I hope it encourages you in your own journey.

Oh Sean, I am so grateful finding your channel. Being Polish immigrant in Canada (now I am 59 years old), I couldn’t for years recognize myself as a human in world of success. 27 years later, thanks to you I have understood that for introvert there is a spot in this world. My dream is to capture moments of my life and not being disappointed with photos I have taken. My goal is to learn also photo and video editing. While watching your photographs I was so touched by few of them taken in my home town of Warsaw. Best Christmas wishes and happy New Year to you and your family

I never comment on youtube videos but nothing can stop me from pleading with you to never change. This style of video is what I think youtube is created for. You seem selfless and genuine, not proud, not egotistical and just genuinely wanting to share some useful words of wisdom with us (not to mention that every frame is exceptionally beautiful). This is the most inspiring video on RUclips (and I have showed this to people who have nothing to do with photography - it's the great way you express things). Photographically speaking, in this and the other videos of yours I've seen, you focus so much on the philosophy the facilitates everyone discovering their own voice or contribution over dictating how people can replicate your style or that of others. Thank you so much, please do more like this and please PLEASE don't change when your view counts are all well over a million. Much love and admiration, Cam

I have now watched all of your videos, Sean and suddenly the reason why you are such a natural when it comes to explaining the human experience is clear. You were a priest. The church’s loss is our gain. I love the idea of beginning in winter and that is what I have done too. At 50 I had a life changing experience which led me to taking photography seriously and, just as you did, wondering if I could make my passion my job. Its still cold out but there are glimmers of warmth and there’s a lot of internal growth and a little external too. I will keep pushing because this is where I was meant to be. Despite the cold, I’m happier than I’ve been in a very long time. Thank you, Sean. You are much appreciated x

Sean Tucker, thanks 🙏🏼 We are alike in that the characteristics required in our previous careers are very much reflected in the way we live and help others. I was a psychiatric nurse and have fought for the underdog all my life. I’m headed to Italy next week, primarily to shoot mountains but I just know I will spend a fair bit of time on the streets with the homeless refugees. We are who we are and I’m happy to be me. Thanks for being you 👣

Sean, I've been watching your RUclips videos for a while now, picking and choosing the topics that are of interest to me, and now, after watching this video, everything thing makes more sense to me. Your intelligence, style, philosophy, imagery, and ability to communicate clearly with fantastic imagery. The work that you publish here is such a stark contrast to almost everything else I come in contact with daily. Watching you and viewing your work is like breathing a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

I'm actually tearing up after watching this... This is so relatable to me. Like you, I quit a job that I was not happy with anymore when I was 30, and decided to try and make a living from my photography. It's been a very rough road. Sometimes, I feel like I've never been happier, but I also get frustrated because progress has been slow and making ends meet has been very difficult. Like you, I just assumed that work would find me because I had talent - while in reality I had so much to learn. I still do.
Your channel has inspired me not to lose faith. To keep going, but also to step up my game. Success will not come because I believe I deserve it. It will come if and when I have earned it. Thank you for your honesty and genuine care, Sean. You really make a difference in a lot of people's lives!

I must confess, I really thought this was going to be a tech video, what cam setting for this shot or that setting for a different view. It is a tech video, but not for the camera, but for the mind. You have touched a part of me that I could not reach myself. The artist emotion that I hide inside. I am 52 years old. as a young lad I would draw, paint, and take photos (when ever possible) with a lot of emotion and heart, but that was not ever encouraged because it was not real work. In order to ever make it in life you must work hard. I have foregone my true passion for the arts most of my life because I had to have a "job". I now am getting closer to retirement and the boy in me is starting to wake once more. You Sir, have activated the alarm clock. I feel more passion for the things I love most just from watching a few of your videos than from watching thousands of tech vids. I just want to thank you for your message. I feel its from your heart. And I want to apologize for rambling on.

I'm really touched by this video. Found your channel a view days ago and start diving into your channel. I almost became a teacher but changed my path at the age of 29. Now I got my own small Graphics and Photography Studio in the middle of nowhere in Austria. I always felt like a really small fish and it was absolutely ok. Now after seven years of making a living with what I love, I start to recognize, that I learned a lot through the last decade and it was always learning by doing! I think it's the only way to really get better. You can simply fill stuff into your brain (like it's done in school) and it will leak out at the bottom of your head, leaving almost no traces. But by doing what you love, you learn every second. My biggest mistake was (and sometimes still is), not to tell people what I'm doing (out of a lack of self-confidence).

Just made the jump myself, age 46. I am in a privileged position though....I will still keep my existing career, and make sure the bills are paid. Hopefully, over time, the photography can allow me to reduce my hours further. If nothing else, I will have the excuse, and time, to get out into the world. It is a good feeling to have made the decision. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, and wisdom, and for the lovely views of Cumbria. Sean, you are a riveting storyteller; listening to you is such an incredible morale boost. I am an orthopaedic surgeon; although I love what I do, fulfillment has always been elusive. Learning photography has in many ways filled that void. In a few months, I’m moving to another country and I could possibly be changing careers too. Honestly, I am anxious about the whole thing and I have second thoughts about it from time to time. But I know that I have made the right decision. Your message that change alway starts in winter, but is inevitably graced by spring, has buoyed my spirits. You have reinforced my faith in the truism that the slow pace of progress should not be a deterrent to marching on. My favourite line from this video-
“If progress is slow, it means you’re normal”.
The background score supplemented the mood of your message and photos so well. Thank you so much!🙏🏻

Thanks Agatha:) I wish I had time to do more. Once a month or so is all I can manage at the mo, on top of work, but I'll try and keep them coming.

Quality over quantity! I find myself constantly refreshing your channel in the hope of a new video, I guess the good stuff just takes time. Always makes my day when I see a new video from you. Original stuff that's worth far more than the merry go round of gear reviews and camera settings. Inspirational and aspirational.

+obsidian773 very kind. Thanks mate. Yeah I don't know how people push videos out as often as they do. Unless I can make RUclips videos my job one day, once a month is as good as I can manage for now:)

After watching several of your videos, I felt you had a very spiritual side to you. So far all your videos have been so much more than just photography. Hey, you are in a sense still doing priestly work by touching the hearts of the viewers.. at least I speak for myself. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing something of your story. There is a depth, an honesty and authenticity that is so very much needed. I suspect something of that is what the church didn't like (you'd fit very well into the one I'm a part of in Australia. . . . ) and what you've carried forward from one life space to another. You're the kind of person who when they speak, they've got something to say, so sit down and listen, cos it's worth giving attention to every word. You take to the heart and soul of photography!

A rather belated comment from me Sean but just wanted to add my praise to the many others. Tough to find "different" channels sometimes on YT but your honest intelligent comments are refreshing and thought provoking. In a time when such an approach seems lacking in those at the "top" and elsewhere , I'm sure this will strike a chord with so many. I concur with your comment that "I wish someone had told me this"..my best advice to my son (20 now) and his friends is always "find a mentor(s), ask others and learn from their experience rather than floundering on your own..a ten minute chat with the right person can teach you what it'd take a year to learn...congratulations on a great channel...time you did a TED talk !!

No probs..I saw your "introvert" video the other day and thought how refreshing. and cerebral !... I'm shooting with Simon (Baxter) in Lakes in Feb and as a wildlife/landscape photographer I generally avoid workshops (alone on a fell/river etc is a great de-stress from my (just retired from) day job) but I like Simon (and Tom H's) approach and great to see you two discussing as you did.

What a healthy, humble point of view! I just found this channel, and it's very inspiring. Instead of chasing the perfect gear, and the perfect conditions,
you work what what you have, and make the best of it while enjoying yourself. That's what photography is, at least to me, and it's at those moments we shine.

Had I seen this video in my twenties, I might have been on the right path 20 years earlier. However, in that case, I might have "missed my winter" which brought me great joy now, jy that I appreciate so much. Thank you for existing and sharing these wonderful "messages" with us for so long, for free. :)
