      Thank you for this perspective. This resonated with me since, like her, I am not in not in my youth, I am more mature with still plenty of energy and ideas. And recently, after analyzing what to do, I realized I needed to follow my dream. However, unlike her that kept her nice day job until she was ready to strike out on her own, I lost mine due to tbe pandemic. So I decided to create my day job and working on it. Related to the field, but will allow me to work on my craft till I can make it. The loss due to the pandemic gave me the best silver lining of my life and forced me to refocus. Thank you for showing het story. Thank you for showing the possibilities. I loved what she said about letting things sit aside for a while in her editing process.
      The documentary was really well made too, with beautiful visuals and music. The pacing, everything well done.

      I agree the photographs are incredible. At first I was thinking the beach area reminds me of the type of beaches in Florida, boring. I remember watching, years ago, the movie Ryan’s Daughter. It was filmed in Ireland. The story was good but I will never forget how beautiful the scenes along the ocean were. The same goes for the west coast of the United States. When you can take a boring landscape and make it something extraordinary you have vision and talent. She is a great photographer!

    Everyone wants to do what they love and not have to worry of the financial impact. I loved this because she clearly states the sacrifice that this entails. It is not easy and will demand from you. I love photography but won’t quit my day job. Obligations are not necessarily a bad thing, I love mine.

    I feel like her final words are exactly the type of thing that we need to hear today. We see too many people claiming that you can "get rich quick" through photo and video. And while there are some people who do become very successful quickly, it's just not the reality of so many creatives. It takes time to become successful, but because of the constant stream of messages that "we must be successful in our twenties" we sometimes think that we are failures when in fact we are on the road to success.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 4 года назад +1

      most photogs are very poor and can barely scrape by. Fine Art Photography is very hit and miss. it might be MONTHS before you can sell something and all that time and effort and $$ you spent on a project is just sitting there like unsold inventory....not a good feeling

    • @duartemad
      @duartemad 4 года назад +14

      What hit me the most was "specially in your twenties, how are you going to find your voice? You dont even know what you like at that age."
      I'm in my mid twenties and it made me think "shit, she is kinda right" just two years ago I thought I had matured alot and defined what I was.
      So much happens and changed in two years that, after her observation, makes me think I still have a long path to walk to actually "get to somewhere", and that somewhere is far from a solid "destination". Things happen in life, you experience and learn new things, you meet new people that open new outlooks in life's prespectives.
      People say life is short... It isn't really, its just the way you live and think about life that makes it seem like its short.
      I really like taking photos but sean's videos are not just about photography and videography. They are deep works of art that, if you really pay attention, make you question your hobby as a way to look at life.
      When he does a piece with another good photographer, he really knows who to pick, not just based on their work, but on their outlook of photography and life. Its just proof that photography is not just about taking pictures, its how you picture the world with you eyes.

    • @spektrograf
      @spektrograf Год назад +1

      Definitely agree with the sentiments in this thread. So much of the culture of today is for finding "success" in the immediate, but so few have asked themselves, "Is the concept of success they have the one that matters?"
       @Unrelated Mad Two years after your post here, I wonder how your perspective has changed. While I agree that time and experience gives an artist depth in perspective, I think there's value in the journey all along the way. I don't know your work, but wonder if you're already "somewhere", and that somewhere is valuable because it is just the now of the journey.
      Henry Miller had written, "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things."

    Sean what I love on your channel is that through time you evolved towards a philosophical approach to photography. No gear stuff and measuring ... inches ... and pixels in them or cheap tricks to advance your photography. Finding your direction or sight in photography is the hardest part in it. Thank you Sean. I’m happy to have listened to Rachael, a sentiment that rarely happens to me watching videos on RUclips. Her photos at the end of the video are gorgeous.
    I’m not at the point yet that I feel I need to choose a direction. I picked up street photography as a hobby after the lockdown in the Czech Republic was lifted and I needed something that pushed me to be outside every day. Which I did, and I’ve been shooting continuously since June. Often with your advice in the back of my head.

    I put off watching this as I thought it would be one of those 'instructional' videos of finding your photographic niche.
    Instead, what it did is start an internal dialogue of what I wanted to do next in my life. I'm now at a transitional phase, with a new baby in the family and serious thoughts of leaving a comfortable corporate career to pursue my calling in photography.
    But very rarely does your calling allow you to make a decent living and that thought has always been plaguing me for years. But what Rachel has shared has given me and probably many others who are in the same situation as I am a certain sense of hope that, yes, it's possible.
    Thank you Sean for putting this up on your channel and Rachel for the insights we rarely get from other successful 'transitioned' photographers.

    Thank you Sean for this extremely captive and motivation message from this extraordinary women. She said something that many other channels don’t, she stated how if you are young explore life first before deciding and to be cognizant of your financial commitments and family obligations. She talked about not being in a hurry or even really looking at the photos and just soaking up the environment for inspiration and just letting it happen, fantastic.
    Her though process of not deleting photos right away and keeping them to only realize that what wasn’t interesting that day could be a motivation step and photo for another time. I’m sure it has taken her time to unlock what was inside of her. And more importantly follow your passion and if it takes paying for a course to unlock it is money well spent. Great guest and fascinating prospective, Master Teacher, Sean Tucker.

    Thank you. I have to say I have started to lose hope in my direction with photography. After years of searching for the passion, it has left me. But there is something about you and this story that is very striking to me. Quickly, back in, wow, must have been 1999 or 2000 I was on a vacation. Hated my job and one morning I went down to the rock on the edge of the water. I watched the water crash on the rock and my eye began to see things in a frozen moment. Similar to Rachael's images. And that was a moment of regrowth to a passion I started five years before that. But life went the way it did and constantly I searched for a direction in the photography journey. And to this day I am still hopeful but have to admit I am exhausted in trying to find it.
    There was one thing she said that struck me and maybe it will help. She said that she has her photography days. Days where no matter what the weather is she is going out. So I will look at that and see if that will work for me. And the crashing of waves once sparked my passion for photography in me so again I might live that same drive to the passion that she has done.
    The ocean has a similar meaning to me as it does to Rachael. I didn't spend my time on sailboats but spent my younger years by the ocean in Long Island in NY. I have this one place I always went to and would sit in my car for hours watching the inlet where the ocean would meet the bay. And never was it the same thing and it always brought comfort to me.
    Thank you Sean, you are a true believer in living the photography dream.

    These series focussing on individuals and their photography quest is absolutely outstanding, and something that all photographers can learn a thing or two. We are much more educated and learn more from these than watching endless drivel about camera gear and criticism from RUclipsrs like Tony Clickbait BS or the American Chipmunk (Fro).
    Thank you Sean.

    I have followed your channel for some time and have found the advice you have given incredibly useful in my journey as a photographer. I find the photographers that you highlight, and their work, beautiful. This video in particular has struck a chord with me. I am in my 40’s and am raising a family and try to carve out time photograph what I want to. The advice that she gave for someone in my stage of life is something that i think will be incredibly useful for me. Thank you for sharing her story.

    This video just showed up at right time. I've been overwhelmingly exited about initiating my self as a photographer and filmmaker. Trying to make people know what I'm about to start doing, my family members made me stop for a moment and realize that I was taking it too fast too soon. Too fast for me to really have a clear idea of what exactly I want to end up doing with this new experience, and too fast for my "social media friends" to understand why from doing health and fitness content suddenly I'm a photographer. To be honest I feel kind of lost and insecure right now but thankful for those who helped me realize the obvious which I wasn't seeing. As she wisely said, I still in my early twenties and don't know exactly what I like and what I don't. Thanks for putting this out, it truly had an impact on me!

    What a lovely feature, this video. I love how she explained, especially at the end, how she moved from being a lawyer to photography. I've seen my share of friends do the, "tomorrow, I'm going to X" (whether photography or not) without a plan of how they're going to do it or make the transition. And many have failed.
    When I got back into photography in 2011 after a 20 year absence, I made the conscious decision that I would NOT make this my profession. I had taken a hobby and turned it into a business, and after 8 years, hated it so much, that I've only now started showing any interest in that old hobby...9.5 years after closing my business. I didn't want that to happen with photography.
    Finding direction for me wasn't as difficult as I though it would be, just took some trial and error. Some things I hated, others were OK, others paid but I wasn't passionate about it. Settled on portrait work, even though I'm somewhat a misanthrope. Ironic.
    Thank you again, Sean, for making these introspective videos. I really look forward to them.

    So this is a VERY behind the time of this post comment. I have been following Rachel's work the past three years and only stumbled upon this vlog via your website. It is such a good vlog. I am near that part of my journey where I will be leaving my current career in December and moving to Portugal. This is giving me the motivation to concentrate more on my photography, assess and and take a moment to first appreciate on the skills I have acquired, the progress I have made. Knowing that that this is what I really would like to further. Thank you again for a wonderful insightful vlog.

      I think the simple answer is that you can only jump when you’re sure that what you’re jumping to can pay the bills. I am a very cautious person by nature and I think that you can pick up from Rachael that she is too. Play it safe. When you can honestly say that photography has enough work coming in that you can make it, then it’s time.

      I can only draw on personal experience, but for me it took 3 years from deciding to really focus on building a full time career in photography to build enough of a client base to photograph weddings full time. Throughout this time I was doing both and it was a struggle. I can relate so much to having a job that you hate, and I do believe that the only reason I held it together and didnt break down was being able to focus 100% on an end goal.
      I would definately echo the advice to be cautious though. Make sure you are 100% ready, and if not put it off for another 6 months then review again.

      @@ajtimages Out of curiosity, how can you build a client base in wedding photography? I mean, these are one-time clients. They might refer you, but it's not like a commercial client.

    What an intelligent, compassionate and honest person is Rachael. Funnily enough I got a law degree in the UK and hated it from week one. And now I am in the creative world. So her advice about being practical while taking your time to live your life and understand what is important to you, resonated deeply. Her photography is sensual and visceral. And her patience and craft benefit from each other. But kudos to Sean for making a beautiful and inspiring film. A great video all round.
