    A lawn care friend of mine gave me an EX mark 26 inch cut, worked fine for two years in my st Augustine grass then all hell broke loose
    had to take it to an Ex Mark dealer and spent $327 to fix it. Replace idler pully and belts, plus a new pull starter. The engine is great, a
    kiwasaki with oil filter. Thanks for saving me 1800 dollars, I was preparing to buy a 30 inch. A very good video.

    Ive always wondered about those 30" mowers. Thanks for the insight. I love my Hondas as well. The HRC-216 is a beast and built like a tank. The first HRC-216 I bought 12 years ago and was used commercially for 10 years before I made it a backup mower 2 years ago for cosmetic reasons. I replaced it with another HRC-216.

    I've sold these in our store for three years. Once I learned to educate my customers on what they were buying I eliminated 99 percent of my complaints. These units are not, nor were they ever meant to be or replace, a wide area walk behind that cost $3,500. I tell every prospective buyer this sentence: 'This mower is for mowing Sister Bertha's nice Saint Agusutine grass but it's not for mowing Sister Bertha's alley behind her house.' Also of note; they hate sandy conditions.
    If you are interested in one of these mowers keep the following in mind:
    1. They require periodical adjustments. One of which will have to be made within the first two weeks of ownership.
    2. They do not do well in high grass. The same engine is on the 21" Commercial Toro. You can't add nine mower inches of cutting swath and think it will have the same power as the 21".
    3. They are heavy. This isn't something to put in and out of the back of a pickup truck all day long.
    4. Since the blades are timed they are very unforgiving when hitting an object. I tell a customer: 'Hit anything with this and just bring me 200.00 for me to fix it.'
    5. I keep hearing about transmission issues but rarely ever see the issue in our store.
    6. The cut really clean, mulch really well and bag even better.
    7. It is not a poor mans 32" T-Bar Wide Area Walk Behind. It's not even close to the same machine.
    Once I communicate this info to the customer I let them make up their own mind whether the mower is for them or not. Great machine when used properly.

      So... Basically, anyone buying an Exmark, which Toro pitches heavily to the pro market, can just forget about using it professionally.
      Nice.

    • @ericowens964
      @ericowens964 4 года назад +1

      47f0 Toro does not pitch 30” as a replacement to the heavy duty wide area walks they sell. Yes the mower can be used professionally and should be but they have a specific purpose. When used outside of that intended purpose.... beware.

    • @47f0
      @47f0 4 года назад +1

      @@ericowens964 - Got it. Avoid sand, which according to the soil and water sciences department of the University of Florida, pretty much rules out the state of Florida, avoid tall grass, which rules out cleanups, and quite a few bi-weekly customers, and generally baby the heck out of it..
      But it's a professional mower.
      Tell you what Eric - Toro needs to stop watering down the professional reputation they're trying to build for their Exmark brand with consumer grade equipment, and Toro / Exmark dealers need to stop letting Toro/Exmark pull that crap instead of covering for them.

    The problem I have with them is that when there is virtually any moisture at all in the lawn grass will cake really bad on the top of the under moreso than what I ever experienced with a 20 or 21" and certainly moreso than with my 36" and 48". Also, they made the opening of the mower to the bagger attachment way too small so that you often have to clean it out. There simply is too much grass trying to pass through a small area. I like the 30" because they are nice and help to save time on the smaller lawns that you can't get into with a 36".

    I've also have several cracked blades on my Toro Timemaster 30. It's important to be very wary of any excessive vibration which could mean one of the blades may be starting to crack from stress. Hairline cracks may be almost invisible to naked eye but will produce considerable vibration when synchro belt is engaged and blades are turning. Once you know your mower, you should be able to detect vibrations if you're paying attention. It think these Toro blades are problematic in their design but they could redesign the blades to increase the elasticity of the carbon steel and reduce brittleness which is contributing to the cracked and broken blades. I'm happy with my Timemaster going on almost 3 years with work in multiple accounts. All cables, pulleys and belts have been replaced. All in all, it's a heavy beast and can do commercial work but be prepared for downtimes for periodic maintenance. Everything can be DIY if you have mechanical ability. But don't put off the essential inspections and regular maintenance. Pay attention to vibrations which means something is out of balance.
    I've actually heard of one roadside fatality from a commercial pull-behind rotary mower breaking off one of its blades and hitting a passerby in the head and killing him. Freak accident in that case.

    Hope ya have looked into a 36” stand on mowers . Wright , Gravely & John Deere all make great stand on mowers . The fixed decks are cheaper but the floating decks make more sense and can handle the abuse of commercial applications such as jumping over curbs lol .
    We used one during our South Texas Coastal properties from Whataburger and our grocery king HEB properties.

    In the comments,asked about the YBravo. Their great! Fast two speed tranny bags well and a nice cut behind. Reminds me of the older two speed Hondas that were truly iron dukes! On the YBravo 25" and 21" the Honda accerlator bag (the larger aluminum one) fits! I'm a taller guy and the handles are higher also which is why I chose it over the Honda. The only bad thing is that there's not too many YBravo dealers so parts and service is a pain.

    Go to your local auto parts store and buy a couple of 12-14 oz spray cans of serpentine (fan belt) conditioner. You'll get an extra year or two out of any belt including your vehicle.
    While you're there, grab yourself a one gallon container of Marvels oil. Follow the instructions and add it to your gas and engine oil. And change your oil once a month at a minimum.
    Last, never cut sideways on a hill as it tears up the wheel bearings.
    My cars, motor cycles and mowers never break down.
    Best of luck.

      I have 3 of them now. If you are good at maintenance they aren't that bad. For me I'd rather have to do maintenance once in a while then spend a extra day cutting grass. What would take 3 with a 21 I do
      In 2 days with a 30. And if you do lawn care get 2 of them so you can switch them off every 4 houses given them time to cool down. And you will figure out what the maintenance is as you use it. Change oil regularly use premium fuel always and stabilizer. But if you don't like tinkering once in a while don't get it. I love maintaining my equipment from snow blowers to lawn mowers and my trucks. And from what I understand just get the timemaster avoids commercial machines. You can get 2 timemaster for price of 1 commercial.

    I have a single blade 30" deck off an old small riding mower (orange, don't know what make) in excellent shape and well built and a basically new 6.75hp briggs ohv. I also have some 12" x 1 1/2" wide wheels (plain plastic bore no bearings). Do you think if I mated the parts together the average person could push it being nonpropelled. Our lawn is mostly flat, many trees, and a large damp area that the grass grows thick and lush twice as fast. We don't mulch or bag. My wife usually cuts about 2 acres with just a 19" push but she would like a bigger mower. PS We have a rider, but she enjoys mowing for exercise. Thanks

      Mike Gipp get another commerical mower 21", the Honda is great only if you use it mostly for bagging. It's a horrible mulcher unless it's dry grass, it's great at mulching leaves in winter though but the weight will cause ruts if you're not careful. Also maneuvering in small areas is annoying and hard, I have a Honda hrc216 and took his video of them for purchase. They're great mowers but the weight is too heavily and the deck will eventually rust unlike aluminum.

    I had issues with what I thought was the belt getting loose. Turned out all I had to do was adjust the tension on the cable above the belts and it's been fine for a year. The Timemaster isn't a fan of wet tall grass even with the side discharge chute in. I keep a putty knife handy. I guess the opening is too small. I'm more concerned with the weight of the thing when mowing ditches. But I still choose to use it instead of weed whacking the entire ditch. If I had room on my trailer, I would have a second one with the discharge hole enlarged for the tall, wet grass.

    I'm finally getting the honda hrx217hya. I've seen your video on the honda hrx217hya vs the honda hrc216. I'm definitely going for the hrx217hya. thanks for the help buddy

      I got my Honda hrx217hya 2 years ago, I couldn't be happier with it, but it's not being used commercially- but did replace an early 90's commercial Snapper model that blew its engine and on top of that needed about $150 in parts to fix up the rest of it.

    I bought the ExMark 30 Commercial the first year of it's release and put on an hour meter. The mower was so fast and strong when new but slow and slippery ever since. I've had to replace a transmission after about every 110 hours of use. The first one or two were covered under warranty. The first trans was the best and every trans since has slipped much more and tightening didn't help as it was as tight as possible. They said they made improvements but all the trans have slipped more. The part number did change. I asked my dealer and he said they lightened the clutch to make it last longer but, I said like a automotive clutch, if you let it slip more, it wears faster so I call B.S. on Toro/ExMark. I tightened the cable so much to make it better it eventually snapped. I retired my mower to personal use after maybe 500 hours. Since new, I've spent at least $2000 on pulleys, spindles, bearings, transmissions, belts, cables, etc. It hasn't made a nice cut the last half of the use (250hrs+). Only the Kawasaki engine has been perfect, otherwise it's a lemon!! Avoid it at all cost! I wish I could sue! Later, I bought the Toro Hydro 21 Aerator brand new, from a different dealer. On every job after about 20mins the aerator slowed down to maybe 1mph. The dealer and rep said they didn't have a clue and because it cooled down by the time they would look at it they did not believe me. I showed a video and they said, huh, we don't know. Fluids were all new and full, and I used Premium Ethanol-free. I fought it for a while and sold it.

    I’ve been wanting one of these but refuse to spend a thousand dollars on something literally everyone has problems with. Seems like such a simple concept for a lawn mower manufacturer.

    we have been using the toro timemaster for 2nd season already and we just had to change 2 belts recently..also the mower setting handles would give way so it would jump out of position...didn't like that..so its going in the shop tomorrow..but it does cut really nice

    I have 2 Exmark 30's, one for 2 seasons and the other 3 seasons. Primary mowers on 25-30 lawns a week w/ no major problems yet. Clogs with wet grass, always got my hands under there, mulches good when dry. Bags great. Ok for the cost, could use a bit stronger trans, maybe a few more HP. But these things do save me A LOT of TIME! I couldn't go back to 21's... No Way!!

      How do they do in fall/winter with the leafs? Is the vacuuming power strong enough to bag the leafs without double cutting?

  • @rbljackson
    @rbljackson 8 лет назад

    Yep....when talking about the belts, I believe he is specifically talking about the Blade Engagement Belt. We go through them entirely too fast! There isn't much adjustment in them either. When you try to tension them, you can actually create another problem which is the blade brake. After the belt stretches, and you tighten the belt to compensate, the blade brakes don't work correctly, and they either freespin for a long time, or simply wont stop when you disengage the blades. I like the 30 for the speed of cutting when they work correctly, BUT...there will be the belt problems and transmission issues.

    thanks for the info! I was thinking about getting a 30 in mower. I currently have the Honda rear wheel but I find it to heavy and can't back up because the rear wheels lock up(don't know if that's normal).

    • @TheFromaniac
      @TheFromaniac 5 лет назад +1

      BluepitJess rear wheel lock up is something I’ve experienced with my Honda’s. I’ve had several HRR’s that did it and just bought a used HRX that was doing it. The cause is the pinion gear on the tranny shaft that drives the gear built into the rear drive wheels. The gear is engaged by a spring loaded “key”. When dirt and rust prevent the key from bottoming out in the channel it fits into to make it flush with the tranny shaft, the key “locks” the gear and it won’t click backwards.
      Also, when a wheel is worn and leaning inward the gear will wear more on one side and begin to slip/lock up. One temporary solution is to take both rear pinions and swap them so the unworn side is used until you can get new ones. They are very cheap and removing, cleaning and replacing the gears is a part of my regular maintenance.

    Great video! The 30 inch mowers ruined the market on small Walk Behind mowers. Ferris used to make an amazing hydrostat walk behind that was 32 inches. It cut super nice and was really easy to use with the hydrostatic drive system. It was amazing on hills (both up and down and side to side) and didnt rip up turf when the ground was moist. Then Toro/Exmark came out with this machine at half the price point of the Ferris, they dominated market share and Ferris discontinued the 32 inch walk behind. The Toro Exmark has so many problems and is severely underpowered. Plus... if your replacing these things every season or 2? Forget about it! I used to get at least 4 hard seasons out of my Ferris 32's. Amazing mower and I plead with the reps to bring it back at every trade show.
    The only alternative in this size mower now is a 32 Wright Stander... great machine but watch out when its wet! Due to all the weight of the machine and operator being on those back tires it rips up grass and trenches when the soil is moist. If you have flat properties without steps, this mower cuts faster than anything! If you have hills or need to go up curbs or steps this mower is a no go. We own 2 of them.

    Thanks for the video. I am looking for a 30" or so mower... and the Toro seems to get bad reviews everywhere. I am actually thinking of going with one of the MTD brands like troy-bilt or cub cadet..... they seem to get good reviews. And when the MTD gets better reviews than a name brand......... your doing something wrong Toro.

    We own all 3. We have a Toro 30 on the first trailer, the Exmark 30 on the 2nd trailer and keep the Honda in the shop as a backup. The 30s require more maintenance, but they are HUGE time savers. When mowing 40 lawns per day and just a little over half have small back gates, the 30s are life savers. We wouldn't be able to do as many yards in one day without them.

      He has the old model in the video. The Toro TIMEMASTER with the 223cc engine has good reviews and although mulching quality is not the best, some gator blades to replace them makes it a good choice from what i've read. Much better than the 190cc version and this turfmaster.

      I recommend the craftsman pro series 28. Good deck design with less clogging in wet grass. Excellent power, 223cc Briggs & Stratton. Comes with mulch blades but I replaced them with the high lift blades and it will throw grass 3 to 4 feet.

    Honda commercial mowers are the best

  • @preocupied1690
    @preocupied1690 Год назад

    I own a timemaster a turfmaster and an exmark the review you did is perfect. These mowers are really NOT commercial mowers between the belts and transmission and cables they are not good for commercial use. Just because they are heaver does not make them better than the timemaster. I replaced the pulleys with the commercial ones on the timemaster and never had a problem since. The timemaster does need a larger gas tank and a better transmission and it would be perfect for home use. I like the wheel adjustment better on the turfmaster way easier and faster than the ex mark in my opinion. I removed the front engine guards on the two because they serve no point for home use and just add weight and I'm careful on where I go with it. To me a homeowner with the aforementioned things I said on the timemaster it would be perfect for home use. One more thing it takes me less than an 20 minutes to change the belts and about an hour to replace a transmission on them.
