I just love how he always gets carried away by his playing, starts chuckling and just can't stop playing a riff or some more. This guy really and absolutely loves what he is doing and could probably spend an afternoon ripping out incredibly beautiful sounds out of a stringed frying pan with a permanent grin on his face.
It's like improv with strings. One long outake made into a take. Fun on a Saturday night. Watching Deering RUclipss and dream of the next one coming in the mail.
I like the way Jens talks about all the possibilities a 6-string banjo opens up for the players and plays blues on it. Very cool. Especially when he explains how banjoists can tune it like a 5-string banjo with two extra bass strings which gives 5-string players another voice as well! Thanks, Jens!
@@RockStarOscarStern634 Yes it's more guitarist-friendly, but banjo strings work differently. You'll get better results with thinner strings to allow the head to vibrate more. I think my usual 13-56 set would sound terrible on a 6-string banjo.
@@EzyoMusic I've used Daddario 85/15 Bronze 9 Gauge Ultra Light Acoustic Strings and it sounds interesting. 85/15 Bronze fills the gap between the Phosphor Bronze and 80/20 Bronze Strings.
@@EzyoMusic Deering ships their 6 String Banjos with a set of 10 gauge (Light Gauge) Electric Guitar Strings. A wound 17 (Daddario makes them) in place of the Plain Steel 17 is optional cause wound strings have a thinner core wire than plain steel strings of the same gauge, and that will lower the tension even further. If you used all wound strings (no Plain steel strings) the tension would be even lower.
It's loud as any banjo but it's louder than a Guitar because the Banjo body is acting like a loud amplifier. That louder volume made it easier to compete with the Horns.

You know, that is the one I am going for. Had a good look (and listen), online and the forums, and it looks like Phoenix is the ideal one for the stuff I want to do.
Have you checked out the new Goodtime 6? If you are looking for a more affordable price, this is definitely worth a look. info.deeringbanjos.com/goodtime-six
Wow ! I love Jens Blues banjo playing. I like it so much it makes me consider doing something completely irresponsible and wasteful like spending 2 grand on a 6 string banjo. I think they could sell even more of these if they gave them an Art Deco feel like Greg Rich does. I've never cared for the visual appeal of Deerings but you got to hand it to them for building quality instruments and distributing the hell out of em. My Deering is as solid as they come.
Thanks Kirby. At the end of the day Deering is Deering. Greg Rich is Greg Rich and we do different things. Not sure art deco is for everyone though. Who knows.

You should see the out takes. We have to retake from time to time because he laughs so much. But I know what you mean. He is a pleasure.
Outtakes would be fun!

Wow! Glad to see someone came out with a high-quality 6-string banjo! Some day I shall have one. :)
This takes us back to the 1920s and 30s in the big band era
Love your spirit Man. Thanks so much
We especially like the A/E version of the Boston 6 with the Kavanjo pickup system.
The lack of a short drone string facilitates playing in every key without re-tuning. It's the cousin of the Plectrum Banjo.
I enjoyed your playing a lot! I'm primarily a guitar player, but I had to have a 5-string banjo. I might have to pick up a 6-string someday too.
6 String Banjo seems more Guitarist friendly because you can use your favorite Guitar string set.

Yes it is. Scott is a Deering artist also.

can you write tab of the intro please!!!!! It sounds awesome!

would somebody from Deeering mind posting the weight of these ?

Great little instrument, Neil Young fan here and his use of six-string banjo has got me seriously thinking I need one
