We are another person, constructed in Carlo's aesthetic and who, at least according to Geppetto's words, has inherited at least part of his personality.....but none of his memories. This is why, even if we were able to translate the dialogues of the puppets and Romeo, there is no possibility for us to join him and avoid the fight: We are not Carlo...and for P, Romeo is only the "King of the Puppets". An enemy to destroy....
clearly, P is not simply made in Carlo's image. it is likely he IS Carlo, just without his memories. when you kill Romeo and come back to the Hotel, Sophia mentions how pale and sick you look when she mentions Romeo's necklace. he might not have his memories, but P clearly remembers that there has been something between him and Romeo. the memories might be gone, but the connection is as strong as ever. not to mention that the first time you physically change and become more human is when you return to the Hotel AFTER you kill Romeo.
I only realized in ng+ that the intro scene to the fight with geppetto taking P hearts is probably Romeo trying to warn you about Geppetto's plan, while in ng it looks like a threat or a sick joke...

P is Carlo, just without the memories. That's why in the rise of p ending geppetto says "I'm sorry, *son* " before he dies.

In the game you get a dicoder and with it you can understand all puppets in ng+
