No it was to become human. Achieving it through “cheating” aka science or achieving it through understanding humanity “organically” are two paths. If you didn’t read any of the notes and treated people carelessly the option to become a real human is limited to Gepetto but his option comes with built in insanity and subservience to his command so not sure if it’s truly a real boy either. Either way you are never really able to become a human 100%. One is through the heart other is via the body but you have no heart.
The father wanted to bring his son back. His put Carlos’ soul into a puppet to hope to bring him back. But in order to do that he needed Ergo, that only comes from living people. So he started the puppet frenzy to kill people and technically not be guilty by saying they lost control. But it was all part of his plan. To use the ergo of the dead to revive is son. However, he didn’t have his memories. He saw it as a failure and thought he would have to try again. But as Carlo, the more human you become the more memories you get of your past. So he was going to use the ergo Simon accumulated at his fortress to bring Carlo back in another puppet. But obviously something happened to make Carlo kill everyone he befriended
