- This is a complaint email received by a comedy club after I'd performed a work-in-progress show there. Luckily the comedy club film everything so could review the footage and see that the claims are totally false (I didn't even talk about most of the topics they claim). And if they saw my show previously and found me "horrific", why did they come to see me again? But it shows why so many diverse heterodox voices are being pushed off the live circuit.

Cancel culture is making an already precarious occupation untenable for a comedian like me. Any accusation of racism, transphobia, misogyny is like accusing someone of witchcraft in Salem in 1693 - everyone is terrified of being tarred with association, promoters are scared to let you near the cows in case your sorcery sours the milk in their udders. I won't embarrass them by naming but some clubs I used to work for have stopped booking me.
I'm not sure if they were even at the show. They got basic details wrong. Other people enjoyed it. It's new material, sometimes it's going to stray over the line. Other comedians have suffered hecklers, complaints, online campaigns. Cancel culture is real, it's pernicious and it's narrowing the diversity of voices you're allowed to hear.
I'm putting my energy into RUclips, podcasting with 3 Speech and Lotus Eaters, and TV/radio. I'm building my own following so I can tour my own show to my own audience. I'll always be loyal to the clubs who book me (who seem to be the ones that are growing - funny that) and ones that don't can suck my balls.

I love the fact they state that the majority of people would be offended. Firstly, they wouldn't and secondly how do they know that, have they run a national poll? Keep up the good work Leo, as you say, they probably weren't even there.
It's not enough to run a national poll nowadays - you have to keep re-running it until you get the answer you want.

This is the number one issue facing comedians today: The "gatekeepers" who try to scare clubs, businesses and audiences from associating with acts based on their politics and personal tastes. "If I don't like it, nobody should see it."
Well done Leo. You are a very brave man.. Not like this coward with the 'weaponised complaint' designed to try to cancel you. . In the old days if you didn't like an entertainer you just didn't watch/go/listen to them. I find it incredible now that the very people who used to fight for diversity of opinion and inclusivity are now trying to silence anyone with a different view to them. No debate, no discussion ......all because their idiocy would be obvious to anyone without an agenda in a fair debate. I think your comedy is brilliant... keep up the good work

I don't think you can sue for defamation unless they made it public themselves. Not easily anyway. Private complaints generally aren't defamation. Unless it was public and I missed all that.

1. Their complaints were untrue;
2. Their complaints were damaging to the reputation of the person being complained about;
3. Their falsehood was published to a third party. The owner of a 'comedy club' are a third party
@@neilg4208 Correct. As soon as a third-party is involved it's defamation. If it's just the two parties, it's abuse. Regarding your third point, yes, the reason it is defamatory is not just because it is untrue, but defamation laws as they are applied by a judge in a case always look at the kind of damage done by "bearing false witness". (The Ten Commandments do not forbid lying; you can still tell your spouse those skinny jeans don't make their 100kg ass look fat - it was about literally acting as a witness, in this partucular case, a character witness, who knowingly falsified what they declaring about a person because back two, three thousand years ago, authorities didn't have very sophisticated ways of analysying misconduct or a greater crime than witness testimony; thus a malicious person could literally have you judicially murdered by lying about your involvement in serious situation - how this got translated into "You must not lie" in some interpretations of the Bible I don't know, but you're not going to hell for telling your spouse they ain't fat on Judgment Day*).

I am deeply offended by that letter. It was entirely adult-phobic, intellect-phobic, comedy-phobic, self aware-phobic and any number of any random phobias I can’t be arsed to magic out of thin air right now. Right, I’m off for a good sob.

I have to say, a bit of jovial misogyny is always fun. 😂👍 (don't tell the Mrs I said that). On an unrelated note, Leo's appearances on The Lotus Eaters are hugely entertaining, even with difficult subject matters.

Leo, it's rather sad that the club actually felt the need to review footage of the show instead of just asking you if this complaint had any justification or was just utter bllx. As with most professions now, nobody trusts the actual professional to do the job they've trained to do.
I actually do not mind that. It shows them that the complainants were primarily not snowflakes but harassing bullies. They did not watch the show and simply wanted to cancel Leo as a person. It matters for the club, because they can adjust how they react to such accusations - if you react to a downright lie you can/should be a lot more brutal than when people merely gate-keep their social space to their norms. There would be a third option, that the accusers in question actually were truly offended (which would require a more delicate response), but that is quite rare these days, it's mostly gate-keeping.
Don't stop what you are doing! You are one of the very few left that are funny, intelligent and relevant!

Love this Woke own-goal. I think reading this letter out should become part of the act. If the Wokies are prepared to make themselves ridiculous and simultaneously give Leo more free comic material to use, it can only be a good thing. I enjoyed the attempt of the letter writer to sound like a genuine comedy fan (in order to manipulate the comedy club): it was totally transparent and thus it was comic. 😀 PS. Simple response; "If you found this show offensive, please feel free not to come again. We can do without your custom, it comes at too high a price."
The problem is that there are people with hateful ideas going to watch these shows looking around seeing a handful of people who are full of bitterness the same as them. This is not about making people laugh but making people agree with Donald Trump.

Simply refusing the existence of bad ideas is the act of a person who wears a swastika tattooed on their heart. A good person can accept their insanity and laugh at bad ideas.
If they took all the time they've spent trying to cancel people and put it into writing a joke maybe the circuit would be a funnier place.
There are two ways to build the biggest tower:
1) Build the biggest tower.
2) Teardown everyone else's until yours is the biggest.
When I started I loved the circuit as I thought we were all working towards building a big tower, now I see... that ain't the case.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I had Python, the Young Ones, Black Adder, Steptoe and Son, the Carry On films, Billy Connoly, Jasper Carrot, Kevin Bloody Wilson, and Rodney Rude, just to name a few. These intersectional woke types would have conniption fits

They don’t want to complain because they came to the show. They came to the show because they want to complain.
I’m guessing that this is a form letter by activists who look up which comedians are playing which venues and then send this email to the owners. It’s got all the standard tropes, including: I frequent your comedy club all the time, I like edgy humor, this just was not funny, I’m not one to complain, we will take our business elsewhere if you do not act.
Thing is, I think companies in general now have the marketing data that shows Twitter Protests (and similar) do not translate to revenue. In fact, the data shows Get Woke, Go Broke is a thing except in very niche areas catering to woke people directly (like organic produce). The Twitter mob is all bark and no bite, which is not surprising when you consider it’s all teenagers and students.

If GWGB was really a potent thing, companies would have stopped with it as it's financially unviable. I once read that there's a stupidly wealthy company or individual that gives monetary incentives to whoever they feel like, and currently that group includes anyone supporting woke culture. That's why GWGB doesn't work, allegedly there's an external force pushing woke far more strongly than the general audience's wallets.

Given the nature of our world, especially in the context of social media, someone cannot be “cancelled” in the full sense of the word - that person will always have a group of right minded people supporting them and their Comedy. Keep Rockin Leo.
There are no topics out of bounds for comedians. The more offensive the better. The only two reasons I think these snowflakes of w⚓️s went three times was either a) It was pissing with rain outside or b) they get a stiffy/moist when they think they hear “nasty” words. That is assuming they went.

You hit the nail on the head. They didn't even see the show. Is someone forcing these people to see EVERY SINGLE COMEDIAN who plays at the venue? No one forces me to go to a music concert for an musician I don't like. I pick and choose who I want to see!
Jim Davidson and Billy Connolly are two of all time favourites but wouldn't stand today
Jim Davidson is alright at comedy, but not so good with everything else. His views on other topics are a little weird, eg, He is good friends with Gary Glitter and even visited him in prison. Also his views on the convids and jabs aren't very good, he does seem to be all for jabbing everyone. Plus he is a Freemason. A few things don't add up with that guy.
Don't know much about Billy Connolly, but never seen anything bad so far about him.

There's "a group of us" - don't believe any of it - obviously trying to worry the promoter. Leo's Edinburgh Fringe show was brilliant. If I want to see guaranteed bland comedy I hate I'd stay in and watch the BBC.
