    I have 2 major rules rules for keeping my house clean, and they're easy! #1- mail gets dealt with as soon as it comes in. Sort it, file bills in the bill holder, recycle junk mail. #2, any chore that takes less than 30 seconds gets done asap. this means you clean the glass, swap out the empty toilet paper roll, put that item away. It goes a long way!

      @@MrTargetone I'm sure you mean well, but OCD is a serious mental health condition, not a tidying technique.

      I've learned to do this with the mail after a very long bout with depression where I'm just now digging out. Deciding to hire a shredding service has made it a manageable task and will continue to make it manageable. I'm also a huge fan of doing kindnesses for my future self. Whether that's making sure my clothes get to the hamper, taking my dirty dishes to the kitchen before bed, setting my coffee up for the next morning... whatever it is. Spoonie and ND life because that I don't always have the ability to every little thing that needs doing... even if it'll only take 30sec... but I am definitely a fan of not putting off what can be done now because no telling if the spoons or mental capacity will be there later.

    • @Chaotic_Pixie
      @Chaotic_Pixie Год назад

      @ZannaDanna Please don't degrade yourself. It's not kind to yourself and its not helpful for others. When you pass judgement on your own behavior... you're also passing judgement on those with similar behaviors and you don't know why they have those behaviors. Everyone has different levels executive function and we shouldn't be judging anyone for lacking in that "skill set" because it literally can't be helped. It can be adjusted for... compensated for... "hacked" but it can't be changed. There's no permanent fix or panacea. It's great that you now deal with mail immediately... I'm doing the same. But I also know a day will come when I don't have the spoons and it builds up for weeks and I have to go get a giant bin from the post office... because that's what its like to have ADHD and several chronic health conditions.
      Be kind to yourself.

Our brand new neighbors needed a really tall ladder to cut down their overgrown backyard trees and noticed our super long extendable ladders outside our house (they came with the house and are seriously too long to store in our garage) and asked us about borrowing them. We said of course and were so happy to have saved our new neighbors money as well as starting our neighbor relationship off with a positive interaction.

    I have an additional tip for the "borrow, don't buy" segment. A lot of tools can actually be rented. Stores like Lowe's and Home Depot may have rental programs, depending on where you live. Usually, you can rent the tool for the day for a fraction of what it would cost to buy it. And most auto parts stores will loan you vehicle tools for "free" - by which I mean, you put down a deposit for the purchase amount of the tool set, but if you return them in good condition after your vehicle work is done, you get a full refund (so it cancels out).
    Ideally, we would all have friends who could loan us the tools we don't have, but for those of us who may not have friends who are so well-equipped, it's worth knowing that rentals may be an option.

    • @suewolf3279
      @suewolf3279 Год назад +4

      As a person who normally has everything, the constant borrowing of any one person or family leads to irritation. Now, I'm not talking about the person that can't afford certain things. I'm talking about the lazy, stingy, self-centered Neighbors who will never pay you back in any form for everything that you loaned to them. So think twice about this suggestion. If you borrow more than twice anything from your neighbor at least make sure you give them a gift of thank you. And if you're borrowing the same thing more than twice then go out and buy it for yourself

    • @blackgold2029
      @blackgold2029 Год назад +1

      I would just go buy I tool I need from the store, use it and then take it back for a refund. You can save money that way instead of renting it.

    The Keeper of Happy Endings is SUCH a good book! It took me a bit to really get into it, then it was one of those books that's hard to put down until you've finished it. We are trying to go through Mom's house, which we still live in since she passed last year. It's been like living in a shrine, and I've been paralyzed by the sheer amount of work that remains to be done. I finally dove in Monday and I'm amazed at how much we've been able to accomplish in just two days. I've got bins that I'm going to use for my six siblings and put the things I know they want to one side until I can get it to them. My goal is to be able to vacuum and mop my home without having to move loads of things.

    For #1 (donations) I started going one step further this summer. I ended up with too many things that needed to be donated and it was overwhelming. It had gotten put off for too long during Covid when places were closed and snowballed. So I started putting in an appointment in my calendar every 2 weeks to make a trip to the donation center. It’s was ok if I only had time to pack up into my car a single box out of a hundred. It was one less box in my house. Now, several months later, we’re almost cleaned out and I’ve changed the calendar frequency to monthly. But I will do it even if I’m not aware of anything to donate by going through my house to find something!
    For #9 (procrastination) I heard a great tip from But First Coffee a few months ago that helped me and I’m using with my kids… whenever you’re thinking you don’t want to do something now and you’ll do it later instead, remember that you will almost NEVER want to do it any more later either. You’ll rarely WANT to do this stuff, so just get it done now and avoid the feelings of guilt and enjoy the cleaner house!

    These are really good hacks, my fave was "touch it once". I have a few more:
    1. No empty hands (unless there is nothing to carry). Old tip from the service industry, you are walking to e.g. the kitchen anyway so if you see things that belong there, take them there.
    2. When cleaning up ask yourself, "Do I want to/have to clean this up/organize this again?" If there is no need and you don't want to, off with it immediately.
    3. Open mail/packages directly at your paper recycling (if you are sure you are keeping what you bought). If your supermarket has paper recycling, leave the boxes there and write the product name on the plastic with a marker If it isn't your staple. That way you avoid getting clutter into the house.

    The robot who sweeps the carpet. I have one and he is my best friend. If he breaks today I will go get a new one. I also have another one who mops the wood floor. I am not real lazy I hurt my back and could
    not hardly get any help doing these chores. I love them both and they both do a great job. MK

    The one touch rule has always been my favorite. I also love finding things that make cleaning easier. I found a rechargeable scrub brush with a long handle that makes scrubbing and cleaning the showers and bathtubs so much easier, especially on my back and knees. I tore my mcl so yeah that thing has been a blessing!

    I purchased robot vacuums 4 years ago. One upstairs and one downstairs on a blackfriday deal. Best decision EVER. It has saved me so much time. I set them to run everyday 30 .instead before I get home and poof, my house looks great when I walk in.

    Christine, the best present I have ever got, was a atomic dust pan. You sweep the floor bring the dirt to the dust pan and it sucks it in. I empty it 1x a month.

    Love the idea of turning the hangers around and then going back in a year and seeing what I have worn and what I have not. I am so bad about keeping clothes even though I don't wear them or cannot fit into them, thinking maybe one day I will.

    Amen to the robo vac! I have 3 because I have pets & HATE doing floors. I work from home so one cleans the the half of the house furthest from my desk during the day so I’m not interrupted. While I’m asleep, the 2nd cleans the front of the house & the 3rd cleans downstairs. I didn’t buy super expensive ones (combined they cost about the same as 1 Roomba), they work great & my floors always look good. It’s surprising how much better everything looks when the floors are clean.

    I always laugh when I hear the work "hack". When I was growing up in the 60s/70s, we used to "hack around", which meant hanging out with friends and playing outside - bike riding, etc.

    I love real books. My hack is to just borrow them from the library. My library is part of a network of libraries and they don't have all the same books. So I go on line to the web site and order the books I want to read to be sent to my conveniently located library. Then the library alerts me the books are in. Pick them up. Load the due dates into my phone and enjoy. Drop them off as finished when out running errands.

    Christine! I have lost 58 lbs since August! Thank you for being so inspirational to me and many others. I live in WY and I am addicted to my bike but obviously can't bike alot cuz of the snow. Thankfully I'm a CNA and run my bum off. Anyways you are very inspirational to me to always keep going! I'm also a newly single mom and I watch your videos to keep being inspired! So thanks!!

    I am a very clean person and I love being organized. It makes life easier. I'm struggling with a husband who is a hoarder. Not a pack rat. A hoarder. I'm at a cross road. I can't live like this much longer. I've tried to organize everything, but we ran out of room so everything is piling up. I may have to find my own place to find the peace and happiness I want.

      My heart goes out to you, Dalea. I can identify so much. My husband is also a hoarder. He calls himself a packrat, but no. It's hard. It's really, really hard. Will he go to counseling with you? It has helped us. It has helped us to be able to communicate about it, so that he doesn't get as defensive and I don't get as hopeless and stressed out. We still disagree a lot, but we are able to put words to it rather than let things fester, and it helps with understanding each other.
