  • exploring the old section of line in Swaffham Norfolk. closed for good in 1968. But what's left? we walk the 1.5 miles to see what's there.
we find arched bridges both steel and brick plus a few other gems. And alas flytipping and dumping. come with me on the lovely journey.

From the Google map view you used, if you go left on the map from the blue circle you will see a property it was a texaco petrol station called bridge garage that my parents use to own including part of the railyway that went to what was the old coal yard, now a camping site. The railyway from Swaffham to the raceway at the junction turning for Downham market use to be our playground as kids. I use to work on the duck farm near the race track. Fond memories of growing up there.

I used to live in Necton as a boy, and love your videos of the Swaffham area. After Necton we moved to Stoke Ferry and I did half me secondary school in Methwold. Then we moved to Cambridgeshire other side of the Fen. But my childhood in.Norfolk was brilliant. My Nan and Grandfather are burried in Necton. So thank you for all your videos.

I remember them taking up the embankment between the last two bridges, I wonder if they then dumped the soil into the cutting next to the 2nd to last one filling it in. The last bridge you went to, I did (40 yrs ago) walk all the way from that last bridge around 1.5 miles SE to another bridge there which was in the middle of no-where. As to hearing the children at that bridge - you heard the children in the playing field 1/4 mile away.

    Hi Adam
I really enjoyed watching your walk along the railway. The old North Norfolk lines used to be maintained from Holt. Years ago when I worked for the electricity board many of the substations still ran along the old lines and i had to walk them and find substations along the old lines, often forgotten for years. If you want to know more Adam, message me. Along with a lot of old lines which connected airfields now long gone, these would make some brilliant videos. I think our industrial past is fascinating.

We always watch on our smart TV, but I have to log in on the PC in order to leave a comment. Sybil was glued to the TV to watch you as always.
You can drive the route my model railway is based on lol A large percentage of the Waveney Valley Railway from Ditchingham to Harleston is now under the A143 road.

Hi there the end of the line that you walked just before the town was the old cattle loading dock and below the high wall were the sidings for the cattle wagons.Great video which we enjoyed as we know that path very well when we visit the caravan site adjacent to the old line.

Take a look on Google Earth, the railway track is clearly visible all the way to Dereham and beyond, it's very interesting to see how the A47 actually appears to follow the old track alignment for a short distance. The cuttings and embankments were the work of the highly skilled engineers who calculated the optimum levels taking account of having to build bridges over and under rivers, roads and perhaps other railways, also taking account of the undulations of the land, all without computers! Speaking of which I am watching you on a fairly old iMac. Keep up the good work!
Getting tired at 19 minutes, will watch the rest in the morning😁
    Robert

    Definitely, do more of these!
Now then, all these old bridges do, as far as I am aware, still come under the auspices of the DfT ( Department for Transport) who are charged with the responsibility of monitoring and maintenance of these "assets". Every bridge and tunnel at least, has its own unique asset number which should be present somewhere on the asset, and must be marked in an indelible and none removable way - IE, stencilled on the stonework or brickwork. Metal plates have a habit of going walkabout, as you already know.
There is a tunnel which runs under some fields in Yorkshire. The tunnel has been backfilled, yet it is still the responsibility of the DfT to monitor and maintain the structure to prevent its future collapse, and the possible sinkholes which would result - Not good if someone builds over the top of the tunnel in the future. So, despite their abandoned appearance, these assets are still kept in an acceptable state of repair, or earmarked for demolition (where feasible).
I'm not sure, but I think I may have Made a virtual overflight of this line. One of my favourite pastimes is to find and follow redundant railway lines on Bing Maps. Unlike Google, Bing Maps do not airbrush out anything that they don't like.
I've covered hundreds of miles of line on the eastern side of the country, especially any that were once a part of the LNER network.
I'd love to explore them in person, but my loss of mobility has made sure that I cannot, so a virtual overflight is the next best thing.
