Try York, try Wharfedale Auction Mart, try Driffield in a couple of weeks, Selby used to, but if it ever will again, we can't say right now. Newark is/was another. I miss those sale days - Bloody COVID screwed that up, and some never did restart afterwards.

      Hi ya. Yea the fridge was new. A normal domestic small table top fridge from currys. About £110. I leave the solar switched on 24/7 and it keeps the battries fully charged. I do turn the fridge off tho if not using the van for a month tho. Been like that over a year now, brilliant set up. Ow panel is 280w, mppt controller is a 20 amp Rover, battries are 2x 110ah lead acid. Inverter to run fridge, sockets, chargers etc is a 1500w pure sine unit off Ebay about 250 quid.

    DC Generator. Looks to have two outputs, 75V and 50V. Wiring looks a little odd. A suggestion would be to clean the commutator, check brushes, spin up and check the voltage between the wired terminals and between each wired terminal and the terminal on the right (which may or may not be 0V and case). May require flashing if no output (incorrect flash polarity can damage the generator and 12V may not be sufficient for this one).

    Looks like it's shunt wound so it will act as either a motor or dynamo, if it was a compound unit you have to reverse the series windings and leave the shunt as is to use a compound wound motor as a dynamo. The bearings should have the brass discs immersed in oil as they pick the oil up and carry it to the bearings. I have a 1920's book that tells you all bout how to do this. I am not far from you,about 9 miles from swaffham so if you ever need some electrical help.

    If you clean the commutator ( the copper segments that the brushes run on) with say a scotch bright or fine sand paper make sure you clean out the slots between the segments afterwards to prevent shorts between them. An old hacksaw or junior hacksaw blade with the sides ground off is good for this. The large cables at the terminal block probably go the brushes and the thin ones to the field windings. Initially I would suggest disconnecting one of the field wires and spinning the armature. If there is any residual magnetism left you should be able to measure a small DC voltage across the brushes and determine the polarity of the output. Like someone said you could put a rheostat in series with the field windings to control the output voltage. Looking forward to next video on this.

    • @NorfolkMancave
      @NorfolkMancave 2 дня назад

      I did give it a try. I put my meter on the 2 connections and spinning it as fast as I can by hand I got between 0.5 and 1 volt. I though that maybe a good sign.

  • @richardmasters3262
    @richardmasters3262 3 дня назад

    As others have said, these early motors could be either a motor is fed with DC electricity, or a generator if driven. I suggest connecting the unit with a belt from an engine or another electric motor and get it turning at about 1500 rpm. A lower rpm will give a lower voltage, and a higher rpm will hive a higher voltage. Also clean the commutator with isopropyl alcohol and a cloth. Use heavy duty wire to connect to your lights as low volts means higher amps. Good luck.

  • @robertmorrow7525
    @robertmorrow7525 4 дня назад

    The guy in comments is right. Those old motors could be either. Depends how you wire it from the brush’s

  • @Dansbus1
    @Dansbus1 4 дня назад

    It’s a dynamo shunt wound it would work as a motor though . The idea of flashing is to magnetise the iron around the field. Yes it would run lights or anything that runs on dc . If you connect it to a 12v battery it will probably turn . For ac you need slip rings .

  • @andrewhall2554
    @andrewhall2554 4 дня назад

    "Flashing" means to apply a DC voltage momentarily to the field coil in order to develop some residual magnetism in the field. This is needed to make the generator self-excite when you spin it up. That's why it is possible for it to generate without having an external power source for the field coil. You will probably need to do this as it appears it has been sitting unused for a while. But why not just give it a try first? No harm done if it doesn't work. DC voltage should appear between the two terminals you identified. By the way, the commutator could stand cleaning.

    Try emailing Mike or contact his youtube smallenginemechanic his an absoulte genius with motor/gen sets ive tried doing a bit of research seems it may bit of an oddity. With power generation however im sure many of us no it takes power to,make power in most cases, especially AC generation the alternator needs a high current low voltage dc applied the rotor to produce the magnetic fileds in most cases, you can have a perment magnet AC motor that can also generate without the needed voltage to a rotor, instead its a fixed stator, and a perment magnet rotor consisting of magnets opposing. Each other all around inside, the stator is an iron core like a star wound it can be single phase, or mulitple phases. Like a alternator for a vehicle tgey are 3 phase output alternators. A dc gen set can also be permanent magnet, its still limited it away. A feild frame style dc motor can be used as a genset, but tends to have a hash sound, a devices i have thats a good example is a radio dynomotor its a dc Electric motor 28volts @3amps motor side, gen dc output is 330volts dc @170mA since it has brushes it has a hash sound when being used. What i find interesting is the voltage,and current ratings. 75/50 volts means it has two separate windings, its current is quite high to not surprising do to the lower voltage, horse power, and current ratings arent that much different calulate wattage at full load momentarily thats key becuse 18amps could mean a short peak, or inrush current. When i worked for a motor shop motors were rated either horsepower, or KW. Genset were rated current or KW DC, AC if its ac frequency had to be labeled too because they build georators( an ac generator that convert's the ac current's frequencies from 60,or 50 hz to what ever the company needed. The lowest frequency motor ive herd was 20hz, which surprise me do to its Shear Mass, the gentalman i was speaking too was the tester. he's the guy who made sure they dont blow big job here, he has a lot on the line! As we were introduced do to us having very like minded thoughts, this was my first day,he told me that, i was genuinely shocked at the such low frequency, i had to ask what the voltage it ran at, if i rember correctly it was 2000volts ac, i immediately said thats gotta be over 1000amps of inrush current i cant rembemer the exact voltage he said but was surprised i was close i wanna stay around 1900amps of inrush but dont take my word its been some time ago now.i still have this 811 tube hed given me some time ago, so i could build a tesla coil with it, but im think he is a ham operator so i plan to build my own ham transmitter soon, i wouldnt be able to transmit at the moment need my license, unless i operate cb at a reduced power 811a is capable of about 50watts of rf power with a well made circut! I dont see any frequency ratings dc power was used back in the day all over offten, but still doesnt mean its not ac, pretty easy to tell with that age, it have slip rings on the Armature, and the stator well its your stator thats were the useable current comes from, the rotor would have a lower voltage, but higher current input that would likely be regulated in some way, something that old would be mechanical. If its dc the field frame would have the voltage applied and the the Armature is your output. Hard to say for sure, if its dc it could be used either way really.

    DC Generator will motor.But designed as a Generator .YOU HAVE A DC GENERATOR (DYNAMO). Carbon brushes are expensive . I have just replaced some on a generator cost £125.00 Erodex uk.Do not use motor brushes they are abrasive and do not make a good contact .With oilers date 1920's.I tested mine by driving with a 0.25 HP motor . The armature windings will show low res. these can be identified by lifting the brushes and res will disappear . The field winding will be slightly higher .One side should be connected to the armature. The other end via a rheostat (variable resistor) to the other armature connection . If it Generates no flashing required ! I tested mine at 400rpm..There are good youtube vids on Shunt Generators (Dynamos)American but clear with good graphics . I have also read old books about Dynamos of the same vintage as your machine . Vids are alot clearer but the old photos are interesting .

    This might help or hinder! When I sailed deep-sea as a ships Engineer the load on a motor was always logged in Amps and the generator load was always logged in Watts or kW. • @mikedyble3648

    A shunt wound machine can be either a motor or a generator, depending on if its driven or powered. Couldn't fully see from the video, but you could eee the feild coils and what looks like a wire from them. So when turned residule magnetism will generate a small voltage, which boosts the magnetic field via the field winding and the output voltage will build up. Given the age i would suggest its a generator. Prior to efficent rectifiers motor generator sets were used to convert AC to DC or act as DC voltage changers. Most early electric rail units used them to power the control and auxillary circuits.

    I think this device was designed to be a generator because its data plate says 18 amps whilst the hp rating is not given. If it was intended to be a motor I would expect a figure for hp but not necessarily for amps - but I am ill educated and may be talking out of the wrong end.

    Technically, a motor and a generator are the same thing! It just depends whether you turn it to get electricity or feed it electricity to get the shaft to turn. I'd try just setting your multimeter to volts DC, connect it across those terminals and turn the motor as fast as you can by hand to see if it outputs some voltage. If so then you have a generator! Obviously it all gets a bit more complicated than that in real world applications...
